Abstract: Digital social innovation (DSI) is an emerging phenomenon drawing knowledge from digital innovation (DI) and social innovation (SI), offering opportunities to contribute to societal change by leveraging the potential of digital technologies. Although DSI has evoked increasing interest, research and practice are far from realising its full potential as many barriers arise along the DSI process. Thus, holistic insights into DSI process and its barriers are essential. Therefore, we identify barriers along the DSI process through a structured literature review considering DI, SI, and DSI literature. As a result, we identified 28 barriers and classified them into the DSI barrier framework. The DSI barrier framework builds on the DI framework of Kohli and Melville (2019) and extends it by including the societal environment. We thus shed light on the DSI process and provide holistic insights into the barriers along the DSI process. Collapse

Abstract: Information systems research and practice have certainly realised the relevance of digital transformation. At the same time, societal challenges are pushing sustainability transformation to the top of agendas. Today, both transformations are crucial to organisations' development. However, research and practice typically focus on one of the transformations in isolation or prioritise one over the other. An integrated perspective of the potential at both transformations' interface is missing, which accounts for their interplay on an equal level. We call this interplay twin transformation and present a twin transformation model building on a structured literature review. The twin transformation model reflects the mutually reinforcing relationships of digital transformation and sustainability transformation on eight organisational layers. Therewith, we uncover how digital transformation enables sustainability transformation and how sustainability transformation redesigns digital transformation. Our research contributes to descriptive knowledge and forms the basis for further theorising while offering practitioners inspiration to pursue twin transformation. Collapse

Abstract: Being part of a digital societies requires a "digital mindset". But what exactly is a digital mindset? There are many answers that have not really been systematized. A related area where systematization already started is Computational Thinking (CT): a branch of pedagogy that catalogued the capabilities necessary to live in a digitized and technology-driven world. CT is defined as a general problem-solving competence based on abstraction, algorithmic-thinking, problem-decomposition, pattern-recognition, and evaluation. Researchers promote CT as a 21 st century skills important for everyone. Aim of our article is to reveal the relevance of CT as complement to IS-research in the creation of a digital mindset. We conducted a computational and qualitative literature review using quantitative bibliometric-citation analysis. From the analysis, we derive an integrative framework to identify how IS-research could profit from teaching, and applying CT, as a competence in the digital transformation of their discipline. Abstract: Ensuring data privacy is an essential objective competing with the ever-rising capabilities of machine learning approaches fueled by vast amounts of centralized data. Federated learning addresses this conflict by moving the model to the data and ensuring the data itself does not leave a client's device. However, maintaining privacy impels new challenges concerning algorithm performance or fairness of the algorithm's results that remain uncovered from a sociotechnical perspective. We tackle this research gap by conducting a structured literature review and analyzing 152 articles to develop a taxonomy of federated learning applications with nine dimensions and 24 characteristics. Our taxonomy illustrates how different attributes of federated learning may affect the trade-off between an algorithm's privacy, performance, and fairness. Despite an increasing interest in the technical implementation of federated learning, our work is one of the first to emphasize an information systems perspective on this emerging and promising topic. Abstract: Although on top of research and practice agendas, digital transformation is still challenging, but promising in addressing economic and ecologic sustainability. However, we lack understanding of the effects of digital transformation on social sustainability and vice versa. Given the relevance of humancentred challenges during digital transformation, a better understanding of the effects of digital transformation on social sustainability is needed. To provide such holistic understanding, we present two effect path models that reflect the effects of digital transformation on social sustainability in the fields of health, education, and equality. Building on a structured literature review and a case study, we find education at the centre of two circular relationships affecting health and equality and highlight the duality of social sustainability as an effect and a driver of digital transformation. Thus, we contribute novel perspectives on digital transformation for social sustainability and aim at inspiring practitioners to foster intra-organisational social sustainability. Collapse

Abstract: Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) is an important means of resolving disputes outside of traditional legal frameworks. It is usually adopted because of its flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and ability to preserve relationships that a contentious court battle might damage. This study aims to evaluate the scientific publication related to ADR. To do so, we used metadata of ADR-related articles from 1981 to 2022 collected in the Web of Science Core Collection and carried out a bibliometric, network, and latent Dirichlet allocation analysis. Our results indicate that ADR research is concentrated in North America, with research organizations from the United States accounting for most publications. At the same time, recent years have seen a shift to a more diverse group of countries, with the Chinese City University of Hong Kong and the Australian Victoria University leading in the last five years. The five main topics in ADR research include online dispute resolution for consumer protection, mediation for family law, arbitration in medical malpractice cases, ADR in construction projects, and ADR in employment law. The most frequent research areas assigned to ADR publications are Government & Law and Business & Economics. Network results show keywords ADR, Mediation, and Arbitration as central nodes, while the Chinese and North American organizations established the most frequent collaborations, addressing ADR applications in various sectors. The findings underscore the interdisciplinary nature of ADR research, its adaptability across industries, and the importance of cross-cultural research partnerships. Collapse

Abstract: Digital ventures face significant organizational challenges when scaling, including increasing sales and employee numbers, that withdraw resources from working on their market offerings. While digital entrepreneurship literature stresses the importance of creating processes that balance structure and flexibility to deal with these challenges, business process management (BPM) literature focuses on improving pre-designed business processes. We reconcile these perspectives in a structured literature review to explore how BPM can support digital venturing. We identify synergies and tensions between BPM and digital entrepreneurship and propose three avenues for future research. These include exploring ambidextrous BPM in digital ventures, treating digital venturing as a business process, and developing capabilities for balancing flexibility and structure. We contribute to information systems research by critically reviewing the literature on BPM and digital entrepreneurship and providing potential areas for future investigation. Collapse

Abstract: Financial technology (fintech) is seen as possessing significant potential to provide the poor access to financial services and help them escape the clutches of poverty. Surprisingly, Information Systems (IS) research has engaged little with fintech's promise of fostering financial inclusion for the poor. In the spirit of ‘making a better world with ICTs’, conducting ‘responsible IS research for a better world’ and ‘understanding and tackling societal grand challenges through management research’, we advance a framework for guiding IS research on fintech-led financial inclusion. Drawing on the IS literature and Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D) scholarship, we extrapolate five areas of research that can better illuminate fintech's contributions to financial inclusion: (a) business strategies for fintech-led financial inclusion; (b) digital artifacts of fintech-led financial inclusion; (c) business environment of fintech-led financial inclusion; (d) microfoundations of fintech for financial inclusion; (e) developmental impacts of fintech. We conclude with a discussion of how the five areas offer opportunities for impactful research on fintech and the promise of building a financially inclusive society. Collapse

Abstract: While information systems development (ISD) projects play a pivotal role in maintaining a competitive advantage, ISD project distress evolves dramatically. Given the complex and dynamic nature of ISD projects, they are prone to Escalation of Commitment (EoC), the irrational tendency to persist with failing courses of action. While EoC has been studied to a great extent in management and psychology literature, research on its role in the context of ISD project distress is fragmented, making it challenging to develop deescalation strategies. To address this gap, we conduct a literature review on EoC in the context of ISD project distress. The proposed nomological net including triggering factors, consequences, mediators, and moderators, as well as a set of developed deescalation strategies can serve as an inspiration and foundation for future IS researchers. By presenting this review we hope to inform future IS research to acknowledge the role of EoC in ISD projects. Collapse

Abstract: Simulating a business process aims at analyzing the process's dynamic behavior without having to execute the process. In research and practice of Business Process Management, simulating business processes has been a continuing focus since the 1990s -widely acknowledged as essential technique for quantitative process analysis. Despite its relevance, a differentiated understanding of requirements towards process modeling languages for creating simulation models and user requirements for simulation approaches and tools is missing at present. Based on a systematic and purposeful sampling of prior work combining different search strategies, the present study compiles and synthesizes 113 prior research contributions on business process simulation. Categorizing 56 language and user requirements results in an organizing overview that informs future design research on simulation approaches and tools that benefit (prospective) users of BPS.
