Abstract: The distribution of smart home technology (SHT) in private households grows steadily and enables disruptive business models. Besides the obvious advantage of more comfortability through the usage of SHT, the probability of residence-related risks such as fire, water leakage or burglary might decrease. In turn, insurance companies benefit from less insurance risks and more accurate actuarial models. Insurance companies already offer smart home devices combined with insurance products and assistance services, so called smart home-based insurances (SHBI). The research work at hand provides a theoretical model that partially explains the acceptance of SHBI. Its research contribution is threefold. First, an explanatory model for the acceptance of SHBI is presented. Second, the results of a survey with 127 participants provide the data for the hypotheses evaluation. Third, the analysis results foster discussions about ongoing research in the field of SHBI acceptance. Collapse

Abstract: Resource-based theory views the firm as a bundle of resources administrated and coordinated by managers. We introduce the theoretical lens of Penrose effect to IS research, which refers to the fact that finite managerial capacities will suffer if the complexity of resource coordination is high. Therefore, although investment in knowledge-related assets, such as information technology (IT) and human capital, is associated with better innovation performance on the one hand, too much capital investment is likely to induce diminishing return on the investment because of Penrose effect. Accordingly, we take a curvilinear approach and propose that the relationships between IT/human capital investments and innovation performance are likely to be inverted Ushaped. Furthermore, we suggest that, in addition to bringing resource synergy, resource coordination also incurs costs, especially when the complexity of coordination among multiple resources is high. Thus, we take a nonlinear approach to examine the interaction effect of IT and human capital investments on innovation performance, which may not be always positive as past research often maintained. Longitudinal data from 404 German firms across several recent years confirm inverted U-shaped relationships between IT/human capital investments and innovation performance. In addition, we find that IT and human capital investments have a negative interaction effect, suggesting that high level of investment in one capital will lead to increasing coordination costs and diminishing return on investment in the other. Abstract: This research attempts to understand and test a core assumption in neoinstitutional theory, i.e., that institutional logics shape individual attitudes and preferences, by studying cross-national differences in people's attitudes toward the continuous learning model of employee training--an increasingly popular model of training. I propose that national institutional logics regarding the individual's role (empowered versus limited) can shape people's preferences for the new model of training. By using a historically grounded typology of national polities depicting the organization of authority (statism) and society (corporateness), I suggest how these two dimensions carry distinct logics about the individual's role and, in turn, shape people's training orientation. Training attitudes of people in 16 European (EU) countries/regions are examined using data from the 1995 Eurobarometer Training Survey. Results from hierarchical models show that, beyond the influence of individual characteristics, people from nonstatist (i.e., collective authority is located in civil society rather than in the state) and noncorporatist (i.e., individuals are incorporated into the society as autonomous actors rather than members in collectives) countries are more likely to prefer the continuous learning model of training. By explicitly linking institutional logics with individual attitudes, this study contributes to the neoinstitutional perspective, studies on training attitudes, and cross-national research. Collapse
