Abstract: Companies increasingly rely on algorithmic management (AM) to efficiently control and coordinate workers, especially in the quick commerce sector, where workers are required to work particularly fast. AM often implies that workers face cognitive demands, such as behavioral constraints imposed by a tight management regime, or significant physical demands, such as a high work pace. Against this backdrop, we interviewed 18 food delivery couriers about how they try to cope with these demands. We find that, despite AM-induced behavioral constraints, workers engage in job crafting to better cope with demanding work conditions, to enrich work roles, and to add or extend resources, thereby increasing their job satisfaction and the perceived meaningfulness of their work. In contrast to previous studies where job crafting is strategically enacted by workers for long-term benefits, our study finds that jobs can also be successfully crafted short-term in an ad hoc manner. Abstract: New assistive technology (AT) is at our disposal for improving the everyday life of people in need. Yet, the current way how AT is produced and provisioned is hindering certain marginalised groups in the population, particularly elderly people, to get access to it. To expedite time-to-market, reduce costs, and increase accessibility to otherwise unattainable AT, we explore if do-it-yourself (DIY) could be a feasible and desirable alternative to commercial applications. We provide answers to the following research questions: (1) For whom does the DIY approach work in the context of assistive technology? (2) Under which circumstances do DIY work? and (3) How can researchers make DIY a satisfying experience? The evidence we collected during the “iCare” project suggests that DIY attracts both, elderly people with a need-based motive and a hedonic motive. It also shows that a participatory approach and an early engagement with potential users, their family members, and informal caregivers is beneficial for improving design and use-related aspects of the AT and the DIY intervention. Abstract: Although individual adoption and use of a single system has been examined extensively, little is known about how people evaluate and compare competing systems. In this paper, we discuss and test three alternative models underlying user comparison of competing systems: separate, crossover effect, and relative comparison processes. The separate comparison process proposes that users develop separate cognitive, affective, and conative evaluations toward each system, and the between-system comparison only occurs at the point of choosing a preferred system. The crossover effect comparison process posits that users not only perform separate evaluations for each system, but also consider the competitive effects when proceeding across cognitive, affective, and conative evaluation stages. In contrast, the relative comparison process postulates that users directly compare competing systems within each of the cognitive, affective, and conative evaluation stages. Based on the IS continuance model, we tested each of these three models using data collected from users of two competing instant messaging systems. Our results showed that the relative comparison process is the most parsimonious and the best model in terms of explaining the mechanisms underlying the comparison of system use by individuals. Abstract: In this paper, we present the current state of the art of using conversational agents for educational purposes. These so-called pedagogical conversational agents are a specialized type of e-learning and intelligent tutoring systems. The main difference to traditional e-learning and intelligent tutoring systems is that they interact with learners using natural language dialogs, e.g. in the form of chatbots. For the sake of our research project, we analyzed current trends in the research stream as well as research gaps. Our results show for instance that (1) there is a trend towards using mobile conversational agents in education, (2) a proper generalization of existing research results (e.g. design knowledge) is missing, and (3) there is a need for comprehensive in-depth evaluation studies and corresponding process models. Based on our results, we outline a research agenda for future research studies. Collapse

Abstract: In recent years, gradual improvements in information, computing, communication and connectivity technologies have enabled new technical possibilities for the adoption of Chatbots across diverse sectors. In the case of the insurance sector, the implementation of service innovations based on Chatbot technology can contribute, among other benefits, to improve the efficiency across the insurance value chain, reduce costs and generate customer loyalty and trust (Barrett et al., 2015;Ross et al., 2016). However, despite the advantages, the adoption success of Chatbot Technology depends on the understanding of the ambivalent perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs of the main social actors (i.e. practitioners and potential users) towards the customer interface. Using a mixed methods design based on an interpretive paradigm and within the frameworks of acceptance and diffusion research, we identified the "relative advantages" and "IS infrastructure" as the most critical ambivalent socio-technical factors for the adoption and diffusion of Chatbot technology in Germany. Abstract: The use of communication technologies (CTs) are blurring the traditional boundaries between work and private life. Practice suggests that employees experience both beneficial and detrimental outcomes associated with ICT-enabled availability. Alarmed with the detrimental effects of ICT-enabled availability many labor representatives and politicians intended to address these issues with different technological approaches. However, evidence suggests that these methods do not necessarily meet the employees' approval since they are too strict and do not provide a flexible solution for the different needs of employees. Aiming to broaden the current state of research on availability management, this study presents valuable insights into the management of employees' availability and key requirements for a Smart Availability Assistant. Based on our quantitative approach, in which we study 821 individuals, we conclude that a Smart Availability Assistant is desirable in case of inadequate enterprise availability management. Further, we posit that such an Assistant should not only focus on regulating the extent of ICT-enabled availability but rather aim at reflecting the diversity and complexity of individuals' availability preferences. Abstract: The mass diffusion of social media has revolutionized interactions in many social settings. It has also created a competitive potential for small to medium enterprises (SME) to succeed in an interconnected and globalized marketplace. Nonetheless, little is known about how micro enterprises (MEs) actually use social media. Particularly, what social media are used, and for what purposes? In addressing such questions, this research adopts an empirical approach that considers the use of social media among MEs in the Indonesian retail sector. Data was collected through a survey instrument. The results highlight the importance of two social media platforms deployed towards six core business activities. Further avenues of research and investigation are proposed, given the rapid evolution of social media and their diffusion into the social landscape. Collapse

Abstract: This study extends literature on e-commerce trust and repurchase intentions by exploring the role of swift guanxi and the perceived effectiveness of institutional mechanisms (PEEIM) in the context of a Chinese e-marketplace – Taobao. We explore how Taobao’s social media technologies (online reviews and instant messenger) can improve swift guanxi and PEEIM by increasing online interactivity and presence. We find that buyers’ PEEIM negatively moderates trust in online sellers and repurchase intentions. We show that swift guanxi, created by social media’s interactivity and presence, enhances trust, which further increases repurchase intentions. The proposed model is tested using survey data gathered from managers in six European countries. Abstract: Today’s mobile devices are part of powerful business ecosystems, which usually involve digital platforms. To better understand the complex phenomenon of coring and related dynamics, this paper presents a case study comparing iMessage as part of Apple’s iOS and WhatsApp. Specifically, it investigates activities regarding platform coring, as the integration of several functionalities provided by third-party applications in the platform core. The paper makes three contributions. First, a systematization of coring activities is developed. Coring modes are differentiated by the amount of coring and application maintenance. Second, the case study revealed that the phenomenon of platform coring is present on digital platforms for mobile devices. Third, the fundamentals of coring are discussed as a first step towards theoretical development. Even though coring constitutes a potential threat for third-party developers regarding their functional differentiation, an idea of what a beneficial partnership incorporating coring activities could look like is developed here.
