Abstract: Computing path queries such as the shortest path in public transport networks is challenging because the path costs between nodes change over time. A reachability query from a node at a given start time on such a network retrieves all points of interest (POIs) that are reachable within a given cost budget. Reachability queries are essential building blocks in many applications, for example, group recommendations, ranking spatial queries, or geomarketing. We propose an efficient solution for reachability queries in public transport networks. Currently, there are two options to solve reachability queries. (1) Execute a modified version of Dijkstra’s algorithm that supports time-dependent edge traversal costs; this solution is slow since it must expand edge by edge and does not use an index. (2) Issue a separate path query for each single POI, i.e., a single reachability query requires answering many path queries. None of these solutions scales to large networks with many POIs. We propose a novel and lightweight reachability index. The key idea is to partition the network into cells. Then, in contrast to other approaches, we expand the network cell by cell. Empirical evaluations on synthetic and real-world networks confirm the efficiency and the effectiveness of our index-based reachability query solution. Collapse

Abstract: Artificial intelligence-based voice assistants (VAs) such as Amazon Alexa deliver personalized product recommendations in order to match consumers’ needs. The use of voice assistants for shopping purposes incorporates elements of risk affecting when and how they are considered trusted relationship partners. In this uncertain environment, it is unclear ‘when’ voice assistants are capable of gaining trust and ‘how’ the development of such a trusted relationship affects decisions. This research explores the effect of trusting beliefs towards voice assistants on decision satisfaction through the indirect effect of consideration set size (n. of options), in the context of voice shopping. Findings of an individual-session online experiment (N = 180) show a positive direct effect of trust on customer’s satisfaction and a mediating role of set size, confirming consumers’ bias towards default choices. This study highlights the consequences of trust in AI-enabled voice assistants for decision-making during utilitarian purchases. Collapse

Abstract: In smart city contexts, voluntary citizen reporting can be a particularly valuable source of information for local authorities. A key question in this regard is what motivates citizens to contribute their data. Drawing on motivation research in social psychology, the paper examines the question of whether self-concern or otherorientation is a stronger driver of citizen reporting engagement. To test their hypotheses, the authors rely on a sample of users from the mobile application ‘‘Zurich as good as new’’ in Switzerland, which enables citizens to report damages in and other issues with the city’s infrastructure. Data was collected from two different sources: motivation was assessed in an online user survey (n = 650), whereas citizen reporting engagement was measured by the number of reports per user from real platform-use data. The analysis was carried out using negative binomial regression. The findings suggest that both self-concern and other-orientation are significant drivers of citizen reporting engagement, although the effect of self-concern appears to be stronger in comparison. As such, this study contributes to a better understanding of what motivates citizens to participate in citizen reporting platforms, which are a cornerstone application in many smart cities. Collapse

Abstract: With the proliferation of information technology and artificial intelligence in society, human users have started to engage in social interactions with computer agents. In this study, we conducted a laboratory experiment in which neurophysiological measurements were used to investigate the effect of computer agents on the affective processes and behavior of human negotiators. Participants engaged in alternating-offer bargaining over the partition of a pie with either human or computer counterparts and under different levels of urgency to reach an agreement. Overall, our data show that the subjects claimed significantly higher proportions for themselves when they made opening offers to computer agents than when bargaining with human counterparts, regardless of the degree of urgency in the negotiation. However, when the subjects responded to computer-issued offers the picture was more complex. Whereas under high-level urgency, the subjects were more likely to accept offers made by computer agents than by human counterparts, we observed the opposite effect for low-level urgency, where they were less likely to accept the offers of computer agents. In combination, these behavioral patterns lead to the use of computer agents yielding an increase in economic efficiency. Further, the subjects exhibited less emotionally charged behavior when facing computer agents than when facing human counterparts, as the intensity of affective processes was lower and the relationship between arousal and offer acceptance was observable only when the counterparts were human. The results of our study shed light on the potential benefits and intricacies of employing computer agents in electronic negotiations. Collapse

Abstract: The drone age has arrived and autonomous flying is being applied in several areas. Accordingly, the question arises in which industries this technology can make a difference. This paper examines the use of drones in Swiss hospitals. First, a literature review was conducted followed by interviews with selected hospitals. The literature research revealed that academic research on drone use in healthcare is limited. This paper contributes to the literature by showing in which areas of Swiss hospitals drones can be implemented to create cost saving as well as process optimization possibilities in order to manage increasing cost pressure and technological progress. Our study is summarized in two papers one of which is this current paper, which aims to outline the possible areas of drone use while the second paper examines the implementation of this impressive technology in these detected areas. Abstract: Multisourcing—the delegation of interdependent tasks to multiple vendors—is receiving increasing attention in practice and in research. Yet, we know little about the circumstances under which organizations choose multisourcing. In this paper, we draw on incomplete contracting theory and the knowledge-based view to explain multisourcing decisions in application projects. We test our model using a comprehensive dataset of 1093 sourcing decisions made by Swiss public organizations. The results provide strong support for the model. We find that clients choose multisourcing more frequently when (1) the project is large, (2) the software is client-specific and the project is large enough, (3) client and vendor lack joint experience, (4) the client seeks knowledge, (5) the technology is not proprietary, and (6) the client is experienced in outsourcing. While these findings support common views that clients choose multisourcing in response to opportunistic threats and to knowledge needs, the findings also shed light on prerequisites for multisourcing. Abstract: Social-networking functions are increasingly embedded in online rating systems. These functions alter the rating context in which consumer ratings are generated. In this paper, we empirically investigate online friends’ social influence in online book ratings. Our quasi-experimental research design exploits the temporal sequence of social-networking events and ratings and offers a new method for identifying social influence while accounting for the homophily effect. We find that rating similarity between friends is significantly higher after the formation of the friend relationship, indicating that with social-networking functions, online rating contributors are socially nudged when giving their ratings. Exploration of contingent factors suggests that social influence is stronger for older books and for users who have smaller networks, and that relatively more recent and extremely negative ratings cast more salient influence.The online appendix is available at https://doi-org.tudelft.idm.oclc.org/10.1287/isre.2017.0741. Abstract: Companies pay high prices for detailed customer information (e.g., income, household type) for gaining insights and conducting targeted marketing campaigns. We argue that companies can utilize predictive analytics artifacts to derive such information from existing customer data in combination with freely available data sources, such as open government data. In this study, we use a machine learning artifact for a specific yet highly relevant case from the utility industry, trained on data of 7,504 energy customers and investigate two important aspects for predictive business analytics: First, we identified the sparsely available open government statistics and found that even that limited amount of open data can increase our artifact’s performance. Second, we applied the predictive models, trained with a regional customer dataset, on households in other geographic regions with acceptable performance loss. The results support the development of systems aiding managerial decision-making, predictive marketing and showcase the value of open data. Collapse

Abstract: Self-checkout terminals allow integrating customers as active coproducers into a retailer’s business processes. They have enjoyed increasing popularity in the past years since they allow saving costs and increasing customer satisfaction. Yet, they cannot be implemented in many retail settings, as the technology relies on retailer provided terminals and does not yet fully utilize the possibilities provided by mobile smartphones, which until recently have mostly served as decision or shopping aids. This paper presents steps towards and results from a field study of a purely mobile self-checkout solution that provides a more time efficient shopping experience to time-constrained users. We show that the time performance of app users is independent of store rush and that the time for a transaction is significantly lower for app users compared to regular shoppers during peak periods. Abstract: Self -tracking, or the desire to quantify one's own behaviour by means of personal information systems, has developed from a niche activity for early adopters to a mass phenomenon. Despite its increasing spread in society, however, little is known about the drivers of technology adoption and use in this specific domain. Addressing this gap, the research-in-progress at hand aims to (1) theorize on the role of self-tracking attitudes -defined as specific consumer attitudes in the self-tracking context, and (2) present a research plan with the goal of developing a self-report scale capable to measure selftracking attitudes. We present the results of a first literature review and of 24 explorative expert interviews conducted to identify relevant cognitive, affective and conative concepts related to self-tracking attitudes. The results constitute a first step to develop a measurement scale that aims to contribute to adoption research and the development of successful self-tracking systems. Collapse
