Abstract: Universities are currently under pressure from multiple fronts: students questioning their value propositions due to rising tuition costs, employers being frustrated at the skill gap and lack of experience in recent graduates, and communities asking for higher societal impacts from local universities. Facing these challenges, universities have focused on experiential learning to bridge the gap between education and practice while increasing community engagement. In this paper, we use a case study approach to present the experiential learning model at iD Lab, DePaul University. The success of the iD Lab comes from a tight coupling of experiential learning and engaged scholarship. Three illustrative projects show keys to success are good relationships with the clients and high-quality product deliverables. Collapse

Abstract: As healthcare organisations are looking for ways to improve their processes, process mining techniques are increasingly being used. Current process mining methods do not offer support for translating process mining insights into actionable improvement ideas. By performing action research at two healthcare organisations, we introduce and illustrate the INTEL funnel, a novel three-staged method consisting of process familiarisation, domain explanation and improvement ideation. Our method complements existing process mining methods and constitutes the first attempt to open the black box regarding the path from process mining insights to actionable process improvement ideas. In this way, it can contribute to a more systematic uptake of process mining in healthcare practice. Collapse

Abstract: With societal challenges, including but not limited to human development, equity, social justice, and climate change, societal-level digital transformation (SDT) is of imminent relevance and theoretical interest. While building on local-level efforts, societal-level transformation is a nonlinear extension of the local level. Unfortunately, academic discourse on digital transformation has largely left SDT unaccounted for. Drawing on more than 25 years of intensive, interventionist research engagement with the digital transformation of public healthcare information management and delivery in more than 80 countries in the Global South, we contribute to theorizing SDT in the form of a design theory consisting of six interconnected design principles. These design principles articulate the interplay and tensions of accommodating over time increased diversity and flexibility in digital solutions, while simultaneously connecting local, national, and regional/ global efforts. inception in three townships in post-apartheid South Africa, different versions and configurations of the DHIS have been adopted by more than 80 countriesincluding all but two African countries south of the Sahara, Norway, and other "developed" countriesthrough the efforts of universities, ministries of health, international organizations, funding, and various other agencies. Its ambition highlights the concerns of equity, inclusiveness, and ideology-that is, making design "that matters" (Bødker & Kyng, 2018) for society.According to Markus and Rowe (2021), the study of SDT to date remains underresearched (cf. also Vial, 2019), despite its tremendous significance in the different facets of social life globally. This mirrors the general critique that Jørn Braa is a professor at the University of Oslo, Norway, where he has spent much of his professional career initiating, cultivating, and promoting interventionist research on and around the DHIS2/ HISP efforts. He is the "father" of the project. His work has been published in outlets including the MIS Quarterly, The Information Society, Information Technology for Development, and in books.Sundeep Sahay is a professor at the University of Oslo, Norway and for the last couple of decades has been engaged in the DHIS2/ HISP project, with a main focus on Asia in general and India in particular. Abstract: This special issue addresses a largely neglected area of Information Systems (IS) research – the regulation of and through Information Technology (IT). As with other human technologies, IT artefacts present risks and can harm individuals, groups, organisations, economies, and society: However, this remains a largely unexplored topic in IS research. Nevertheless, regulators, social commentators, the media, and the public have voiced their concerns about such risks, particularly those related to artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, privacy, digital assets (e.g. cryptocurrencies), and the market dominance of digital platforms. Accordingly, regulations have been instituted or proposed to regulate IT artefacts in and across several business sectors. Additionally, in response to the informational challenges posed by a complex web of laws and regulations, regulators and business organisations have implemented IT artefacts to transform regulatory and supervisory processes or to enhance organisational risk management and compliance reporting capabilities. This special issue addresses the research challenges related to emergent issues surrounding the regulation of and through IT. In this editorial, we take stock of where the field currently stands. We advance a conceptual ontology of IT regulation to guide future research by specifying several taken-for-granted core concepts. By rendering the concepts, categories, and their relationships explicit, the model and its related research questions provide a firm foundation to generate a cumulative body of research on the regulation of and through IT. Abstract: ChatGPT' indicates approximately 416 million hits, while Google Scholar suggests 4710 articles, a number that is likely to rise fast. Generative AI is clearly here to stay, though there are already calls to curtail its use and some countries appear to be banning it. Interestingly, we already see the roll-out of generative AI detection software with tools like GPTZero. The plagiarism detection tool, iThenticate, is likely to follow up and embed generative AI detection as well. In order to reflect on this rapidly developing phenomenon, we conducted a sentiment and topic analysis of Twitter tweets about ChatGPT in academia. We analysed 12 400 tweets over a 3-month period from late 2022 to early 2023. 3680 tweets display a positive sentiment, 2612 display a negative one and 6109 display a neutral view. This pattern already exhibits a shift from the earlier reactions which were predominantly negative. Nevertheless, the topics discussed in these tweets are similar and can be subsumed within two major streams: research and publication. | WHY DOES IT MATTER TO ISJ READERS?Our focus in this editorial is on the practicalities of applying generative AI in the academic research community. The stakeholders of relevance here are authors, reviewers, editors and readers (scholars and practitioners) of ISJ, and also its publisher. All of these stakeholders have a commitment to and interest in the undertaking and publishing of academic research. Indeed, research and publication are the twin pillars on which a scholarly journal stands. Emerging articles comment on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of generative AI in the context of research (see for instance Dwivedi et al., 2023, for an extensive account). In academia, there is an ongoing debate on the various implications that the technology may have. | WHY IS GENERATIVE AI RELEVANT TO RESEARCH?The title of this editorial, viz.: "pickled eggs", should have given some pause for thought. As it happened the collaborators of one of the co-authors of this editorial used a generative AI assistant (Microsoft Office 365's transcription function) to convert an audio file (of an interview with a research subject) to text. In that interview, reference was made to "pico-x", the name of a software. The generative AI assistant duly rendered this as "pickled eggs", presumably the closest term in its vocabulary. Reading through the transcript, numerous errors appeared: personal, product or place names were routinely misspelled, but so too were more mundane expressions. Similar errors occurred in Chinese where an interviewee used the English letters EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) in the middle of what was otherwise a Chinese sentence. The generative AI assistant, which was set up to transcribe Chinese audio to Chinese text, correctly transcribed all the Chinese words into characters, but made an error with EDI, which it also converted Collapse

While organisations are increasingly investing in ethical AI and Responsible AI (RAI) (Zimmer et al., 2022), recent reports suggest that this comes at a cost and may lead to burnout in responsible-AI teams (Heikkilä, 2022). Thus, it is critical to consider how we educate about RAI (Grøder et al., 2022) and rethink our traditional learning designs (Pappas & Giannakos, 2021), as this can influence end-users' perceptions towards AI applications (Schmager et al., 2023) as well as how future employees approach the design and implementation of AI applications (Rakova et al., 2021;Vassilakopoulou et al., 2022).The use of algorithmic decision-making and decisionsupport processes, particularly AI is becoming increasingly pervasive in the public sector, also in high-risk application areas such as healthcare, traffic, and finance (European Commission, 2020). Against this backdrop, there is growing concern over the ethical use and safety of AI, fuelled by reports of ungoverned military applications (Butcher and Beridze, 2019; Dignum, 2020), privacy violations attributed to facial recognition technologies used by the police (Rezende, 2022), unwanted biases exhibited by AI applications used by courts (Imai et al., 2020), and racial biases in clinical algorithms (Vyas et al. 2020). The opacity and lack of explainability frequently attributed to AI systems makes evaluating the trustworthiness of algorithmic decisions challenging even for technical experts, let alone the public. Together with the algorithm-propelled proliferation of misinformation, hate speech and polarising content on social media platforms, there is a high risk for erosion of trust in algorithmic systems used by the public sector (Janssen et al., 2020). Abstract: While information systems organizations recognize the importance of incorporating responsible innovation into their activities, they often face difficulty implementing this practice because employees lack the required knowledge and skills, particularly the capacity for reflexivity and reflection. This paper aims to accelerate responsible innovation teaching and training for information systems students to expedite the process of positive change for sustainability. Using the action design research methodology and the responsible innovation lens, we developed a workshop enabling information systems students to form measurable reflection skills. The workshop evaluation suggests that learning took place and that students are willing to adopt responsible innovation in their future workplaces. A set of design guidelines is proposed to guide further training programs to enhance students' ability to address complex challenges responsibly. This paper answers the call for more impactful information systems research to address societal and environmental challenges and enriches the literature on sustainable social development and business practices. Abstract: The security of every organization is critical and should be proactively planned. The research field of security, workplace behavior, security safeguards, workarounds, and cybersecurity explores how organizations can effectively strategize and use adaptive security plans to minimize the security vulnerability of organizations. These solutions rely heavily on the technology adopted by organizations that seek to align with policies that safeguard their information assets consciously. However, despite several works in the literature on workarounds, the concept of workarounds that poses a security risk in an organization is still riddled with ambiguities. This review covers current research involving 28 articles across the Association for information systems (AIS) basket of eight conferences and other IS securityrelated journals. Our results identify four major categories that reveal the intersection of workarounds and security in the workplace from recent literature. We further discuss their implications and propose avenues for future research. Collapse
