Abstract: Disasters and crises are a part of human existence. While upsetting the normal operations of societies and revealing the inherent fragility of infrastructure and social order, they also push us to rethink "the normal" way of living and working. At this moment, IS research on the experiences of businesses in times of war as an extreme crisis is very limited. Taking the case of Ukrainian businesses, we ask the following research questions: How have organizations adapted to war discontinuities and built resilience? and How have the experiences of remote work from the pandemic contributed to building organizational resilience in times of war? Analyzing semi-structured interviews with managers from Ukrainian businesses through the lenses of adaptation theory, remote work discontinuities, and capability-based model of organizational resilience, we present the types of discontinuities experienced and the adaptation strategies used by the companies in addressing them. Our findings show that the resilience of Ukrainian companies has its roots in agile management, continuous communication and collaboration, experiences in using digital technologies during the pandemic, and international community support. The results also indicate the organizations continuously coping and adapting, re-coping, and re-adapting while anticipating unexpected events, which calls for developing a more dynamic resilience model. Abstract: Teams often need to adapt to planned discontinuous task change or fundamental alteration of tasks, tools, and work systems. Although team adaptation theories have made substantive progress in explaining how teams can respond to change, they have not adequately considered the unique impact that discontinuous task change can have on teams. Such change can render not only collective but also individual task capabilities obsolete and necessitate a multilevel task relearning process. Drawing on the team compilation model, we suggest that adaptation to discontinuous task change is akin to team (re)development. We posit that teams are more effective when they approach discontinuous task change by first focusing on the rebuilding of individual task capabilities and only later shifting their attention to the rebuilding of team-level task capabilities. Moreover, we argue that the uncertainty caused by discontinuous task change makes reward fairness salient such that equity and equality in rewards are particularly useful in motivating members to (re)develop individual and collective task capabilities, respectively. We provide support for these arguments using survey, qualitative, and archival data from 115 manufacturing teams and discuss the implications of our findings for both research and practice. Abstract: This paper presents and synthesizes results from three studies (two controlled experiments and one interview) on using recommender systems to reduce healthcare costs at prescription time, while taking time pressure into account. All of our subjects were real practicing physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants. Across these studies, a total of 160 medical practitioners used a system that provides recommendations for medications along with associated cost information. The main finding was a general tendency among practitioners to reduce healthcare costs by prescribing lower cost medications when cost information is provided by a recommender system. The time pressure faced daily by prescribers, however, appears to impact the use of recommendations by nurse practitioners and physician assistants more than it does physicians. These results have significant implications for cost reduction in healthcare and for the design of effective real-time healthcare recommender systems. Collapse

Abstract: Digital startups frequently adapt their business model, but in doing so they face resource scarcity and need to “make-do” in validating and implementing their design changes at a practical level. We thus argue that digital startups employ a Lean Experimental approach when adapting their BM to contextual conditions. By means of an exploratory multiple-case study on Digital startups, this research investigates the factors driving the deployment of an experimental approach and proposing some factors that may drive differences in its application. Results suggest that most startups dealing with BM adaptation engage in experimentation practices that can be identified with the Lean Startup Approaches (LSAs), although with different extents of application. In this sense, startups move from scarce resource availability in resembling selected elements of the framework, whereas those with higher resource availability seem to be more prone to adopting LSAs in a structured and customized way at the organizational level. Abstract: The targeting and timing of sales promotions have long been critical challenges in marketing efforts. While traditional strategies concentrate on customer segmentation analysis, the enriched data environment in e-commerce nowadays calls for sophisticated analytical approaches that enable sellers to target their promotional activities at the personalized level. Meanwhile, although research on recommender systems has accumulated abundant techniques for profiling personalized preferences, the dynamic influences of sales promotions on consumer preferences remain underexplored. Therefore, we propose that personalized product recommendations can be consolidated with consumers’ evolving perceptions of sales promotions. Drawing upon transaction utility theory and adaptation level theory, this paper develops a novel recommendation approach DAMA, in which consumer adaptation factor, is introduced to model the temporal dynamics of consumers’ preferences and price perceptions simultaneously in the context of diverse sales promotional activities. Extensive empirical experiments are conducted on real-world datasets against baseline methods, revealing the performance superiority of DAMA. Collapse

Abstract: Employees have to adapt to newly implemented information systems (IS) because they are often perceived as radical changes or disruptions. To understand such adaptation behavior, IS research suggests that employees first appraise the new IS and second perform technology adaptive behaviors. However, while the psychology literature indicates that adaptation is a continuous process unfolding over time, previous IS literature treats adaptation towards IS implementation as a rather singular, noniterative process. As firms continue to implement IS, an understanding of reappraisal and the influence of technology adaptation behavior is vital to ensure successful implementations. Therefore, the present paper investigates reappraisal and the influences of four different technology adaptation behaviors. We conducted a longitudinal study and used hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) to validate our research model. The findings reveal that employees reappraise the newly implemented IS over time regarding perceived opportunity, threat, and controllability and demonstrate that technology adaption behaviors influence such reappraisal. One specific finding is that employees might get into positive or negative reappraisal loops. We thereby contribute to research by extending the adaptation behavior literature and add a new piece of the puzzle to understand how employees adapt towards newly implemented IS over time. Collapse

Abstract: This study examines the team-level effects of pair programming by developing a research model that accounts for mediators and moderators of the relationship between pair programming and team performance. We hypothesize that pair programming helps software development teams establish backup behavior by strengthening the shared mental models among developers. In turn, backup behavior attenuates the negative effect of task novelty on team performance. We collect data from the software developers, Scrum masters, and product owners of 62 software development teams in a global enterprise software ﬁrm and ﬁnd broad support for our research model. The study makes important contributions by shifting attention to the team-level effects of pair programming and by explicating mediating and moderating mechanisms related to the roles of shared mental models, backup behavior, and task novelty. The results underline the importance of viewing pair programming as a context-speciﬁc practice that helps establish backup behavior in teams. In terms of implications for practitioners, our results show that pair programming can be a valuable element of team governance to create shared mental models and backup behavior and to achieve high team performance when teams face high levels of task novelty. Abstract: In this study, we investigate what factors are influential to customer satisfaction of paid knowledge, especially among different customer segments, by integrating user activities on both free and paid platforms. Considering the complexity of knowledge acquisition, we first propose a novel measurement of “customer expertise” based on text mining, as a criterion for customer segmentation. Drawing upon the value-percept diversity theory, we then postulate a conceptual model proposing that customers with different expertise would react differently to the price of knowledge and historical knowledge-consuming transactions, in terms of customer satisfaction. We test the model empirically through the hierarchical OLS regression with data collected from Zhihu and Zhihu Live. Distinguishing expert and novice customers, we have findings that (1) expert customers are less sensitive to price; (2) historical price positively influences the satisfaction of novice customers, but negatively for expert customers; (3) expert customers are less influenced by historical satisfaction, which have important implications for market targeting and knowledge pricing strategy. Abstract: As any author knows, getting an article accepted for publication at a top, peer-reviewed journal is a complex and arduous task. The review process is often a black box: Even if the process is well understood, the values or biases of the anonymous reviewers may be utterly opaque. Johns (2017), winner of the Academy of Management Review 2016 Decade Award for a paper titled "The Essential Impact of Context on Organizational Behavior," noted that one reviewer had disliked his award-winning paper (Johns, 2006) in all its iterations. I suspect that many of us have had similar experiences, whether or not our papers went on to win awards.The literature on how to review an article, and indeed on how reviewers' should moderate their biases, is replete with good advice (Lee, 1995). This is a topic that I have touched on in editorials (Davison, 2013(Davison, , 2015 and elsewhere (Davison, de Vreede, & Briggs, 2005). Nevertheless, what of the author who has to do the revising? There is advice, much of it along the lines of "humbly do everything that the reviewers ask for and be grateful for the opportunity." In a "publish or perish world," most of us have little appetite for resistance and we duly revise, reworking our ideas in order to get past the gatekeepers. However, in the course of this revision process, which may span multiple versions over many months or years, the original paper and its freshly minted ideas are likely to change out of recognition, with little of the original work still left in the finished product.The peer-review process, for all its faults, is widely applied and generally appreciated as helping authors improve the quality of their work, but one can have too much of a good thing. There is a significant risk that as authors revise, they move away from reporting the underlying objectives of their research to meeting the objectives of reviewers. Collapse
