How mindfulness decreases cyberloafing at work: a dual-system theory perspective

Abstract: Cyberloafing is a prevalent phenomenon in organisations that may cause serious problems. In previous studies, cyberloafing has been studied as planned and intentional behaviour. Interestingly, we have observed that cyberloafing frequently happens when employees use smartphones to assist with work tasks, but they may not necessarily intend to engage in this activity. We distinguish between active and passive cyberloafing and focus on studying the latter. Based on dual-systems theory, we introduce the construct of mindfulness in the exploration of the antecedences and internal mechanism of passive cyberloafing. We conducted a research survey with employees who use smartphones to assist with work tasks and collected 474 valid questionnaires to examine our research model. The results showed that dual systems are associated with cyberloafing by influencing mind-wandering, and mindfulness significantly decreased mind-wandering when using a smartphone. This study analyses cyberloafing from an innovative neuroscience perspective and contributes to the literature by proposing a new classification of cyberloafing behaviour, reveals the internal mechanism of how dual systems impact an individual’s behaviour, and introduces mindfulness as an antecedent factor of dual systems. Abstract: This study has implemented a platform, namely piniton.tw, rolling out a redesign of user interaction with screenshot. It is an excellent environment for students' collaborative learning, as students upload screenshots and interact with each other to complete assignments by using animated stickers. As the study intended to investigate how to promote learning transfer by means of such enhanced screenshot interaction with animated stickers, task difficulty, online participation, and learning transfer were chosen as the basis for the research model. By applying the technology acceptance model, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and behavioral intention were included. The results indicated that students' perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness are likely to significantly affect their behavioral intention, which in turn promote learning transfer. An implication is that students' learning transfer could be prompted greatly by enhancing their intention to use such platform that provides enhanced screenshot interaction with animated stickers. Abstract: Gamified training is often used to facilitate the adoption of complex information systems in organizations. However, little research has focused on the factors that influence the effective use of gamified training. This study investigates the determinants of effective use of the enterprise resource planning simulation game, ERPsim. The study proposes that ERPsim affordances, such as collaboration and competition, affect coping responses, including task-oriented, emotion-oriented, and avoidance, which in turn impact the effective use of the game. The data were collected from 255 graduate students enrolled in an ERP course at a public university in the United States. The results show that collaboration affordance significantly affects all three coping responses, while competition affordance only affects task-oriented coping. Additionally, task-, and emotion-oriented coping are found to influence the effective use of ERPsim, but avoidance coping does not. The study highlights the importance of affordances and coping responses in gamified training design and implementation towards effective use. Collapse

Abstract: Due to ongoing digitalization and the social distancing measures that came along with the COVID-19 pandemic, the working conditions and environments have changed for many individuals. Because of increased telework, the use of digital technologies for communicating and collaborating at work has been intensified, which can cause technostress. With longitudinal data from two surveys – one before and one during the COVID-19 pandemic – the paper analyzes the relationship between four social support dimensions (supervisor support, co-worker support, sense of community at work, and family support) and technostress creators. The study shows that social support can be an effective inhibitor of technostress creators. However, social support dimensions have to be differentiated in that regard. Further, the results show that the inhibiting effect of family support has become even more important during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results contribute to technostress research and research with regard to the new normal of working after the pandemic. Collapse

Abstract: Transitioning into motherhood can be stressful and resource-intensive, filled with numerous concerns and un­ certainties during pregnancy, such as biological changes and unforeseen outcomes. Expectant mothers, those lacking prior motherhood experience, frequently seek solace within online communities, utilizing them as sources of social support to navigate the complexities of the first-time motherhood experience and to facilitate the exploration of their life-role transition. Drawing on role theory, conservation of resources theory, social support research, and socialization literature, this study explores how online communities can provide social resources for expectant mothers to facilitate their role learning, and examines the antecedents and outcomes of role learning. Based on a two-wave survey of 185 expectant mothers (pregnant with their first child), the results show that online community resources (i.e., informational support, emotional support, and social companion­ ship) positively impact role learning (conceptualized as a higher-order factor, including role meaning, role competence, and role internalization), and role learning significantly enhances their subjective well-being. Moreover, role learning fully mediates the links between each type of social support and subjective wellbeing. A better understanding of the social support mechanisms involved in role learning may empower healthcare providers to leverage the capabilities of social media, thereby offering effective guidance to pregnant women confronting uncertainties in their transition to new life-roles. Abstract: Due to their constant interactions with IT, users accumulate beliefs they hold toward their selves as IT users. Given the ambivalent nature of IT, individuals may develop ambiguous and incoherent beliefs toward their selves as IT users. This can lead users to limit the efficacy of their interactions with IT and negatively affect their overall perception of themselves. This paper conceptualizes the IT Self-Concept Clarity (ITSCC) construct to improve the predictive power of models interested in the users' daily interaction with IT. We also develop a measurement scale for ITSCC. We validate the scale by performing three activities. We perform a pre-test, a cross-sectional survey study and an experimental manipulation study. We outline the relationship between ITSCC and computer self-efficacy and selfesteem. We also validate the effect of the experimental manipulation on our scale, which will allow assessing the causal impact of ITSCC in future studies. Collapse

Abstract: The proliferation and adoption of phones and other emerging technologies in health care is significantly growing in Ghana. Though tapping into this technology innovation could tremendously improve health care in resource deficient settings, there is a dearth of research on adoption antecedents. Drawing strength from behavior studies anchored on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), our study proposed a model, and further sampled 386 respondents to predict mobile health adoption behavior. Empirical results of our study revealed that attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavior control, personal moral norm, and language all had a significant positive relationship with adoption intention. Furthermore, adoption intention was also revealed to have a significant positive relationship with behavior. And finally, Internet bandwidth was revealed to significantly moderate the relationship between adoption intention and actual adoption behavior. Based on the results, further insights for stakeholders and policy, implications for accelerating mobile health adoption, and suggestions for future research are subsequently delineated. Collapse

Abstract: This research investigates the relationship between couples’ work-orientation incongruence—the degree to which romantic partners view the meaning of their own work differently—and their ability to succeed in making job transitions and experiencing satisfaction with the jobs they hold. We use a social information-processing approach to develop arguments that romantic partners serve as powerful social referents in the domain of work. By cueing social information regarding the salience and value of different aspects of work, partners with incongruent work orientations can complicate each other’s evaluation of their own jobs and the jobs they seek. In a longitudinal study of couples in which one partner is searching for work, we find that greater incongruence in couples’ calling orientations toward work relates to lower reemployment probability, a relationship that is mediated by an increased feeling of uncertainty about the future experienced by job seekers in such couples. Calling-orientation incongruence also relates to lower job satisfaction for employed partners over time. We contribute to the burgeoning literature on the role romantic partners play in shaping work outcomes by examining the effect of romantic partners’ perception of the meaning of work, offering empirical evidence of the ways in which romantic partners influence key work and organizational outcomes. Our research also contributes to the meaning of work literature by demonstrating how work-orientation incongruence at the dyadic level matters for individual work attitudes and success in making job transitions. Abstract: To effectively design digital games and gamified systems, it is important to properly understand the psychological and behavioral processes that players use to reach goals. Although numerous prior studies have examined individuals' adoption, use, and continued use of digital games, few attempts have been made to understand how people desire and strive to achieve goals. The objective of this study is to develop and test a model of individuals' achievement of goals in digital gaming. Drawing upon theories of goal-directed behavior, we propose a conceptual model describing goal setting, goal striving, goal attainment, and feedback evaluations in the context of mobile gaming. To empirically test the proposed model, we collected two sets of (cross-sectional and longitudinal) data from 407 users of Pokémon GO. The results generally indicate that goal-directed effort plays an important role in translating goal desire into goal attainment. In addition, we found prior game points and goal desire have interaction effects on goal-directed effort and the subsequent acquisition of game points. Finally, this study shows that action strategies such as in-game payment and deliberate planning have differential effects on goal-directed effort and satisfying experiences. Overall, our findings provide empirical support for the efficacy of our goal-oriented model as a theoretical tool for explaining the process of goal striving to obtain game points. Our findings not only have important implications for digital gaming but also contribute to emerging research on gamified systems. Collapse

Abstract: Inter-firm negotiations are often non-discrete: they are not isolated exchange episodes, but part of an ongoing process of building strategic relationships between the firms. This view posits a challenge to the design and application of negotiation mechanisms in e-markets supporting business-to-business exchanges. The assessment of the mechanisms needs to include both the impacts within each discrete exchange episode and those shaping the future of the inter-firm relationships. We argue that strategies of information revelation implemented with negotiation mechanisms can influence participants’ fairness perceptions, which can further affect business relationships. The paper examines both substantive and subjective measures in an experiment involving two multi-bilateral negotiations with distinct information disclosure strategies. The results show that the revelation of the best offer affects participants’ perceived fairness which, in turn, positively influences intention to do business. The findings have implications for both the design and use of negotiation mechanisms where inter-firm relationships are concerned. Collapse
