Sustainable production: Using simulation modeling to identify the benefits of green information systems

Abstract: Researchers and practitioners highlight the potential for information systems to promote sustainability in agricultural production, but little is known about the private and social benefits of specific agricultural decision support tools. In this study, we utilize the resource-based view to assess a specific green technology using an agricultural-economics simulation to estimate the quantitative benefits of this technology expressed as dollars saved and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. In particular, we employ a five-step simulation modeling approach within a micro-economic model of crop production to assess the ability of yield monitors to promote liquefied petroleum (LP) gas savings and subsequently reduce production costs, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with LP gas burning, and generate additional revenue at a market for GHG mitigation credits. We estimate that the total benefits of using the green IS to improve the harvesting decision would have been $82 million in post-harvest cost savings and a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. We present this simulation modeling approach, a common methodology in environmental sciences and economics, as a viable methodology for IS researchers interested in modeling intricate decision-making processes that are impacted by technology. Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe purpose of this study is to locate individual, institutional, and resource factors that influence data sharing behaviors among social scientists. Given the benefits to the social science disciplines in the advancement of scholarship, and the recent data sharing policy changes of funding agencies, it is necessary to determine the factors that support and impede data sharing behaviors. A research model was developed and validated based on the results of a survey of 361 social scientists. The model is informed by theory of planned behavior and institutional theory to map underlying individual motivations, institutional pressures, and availability of resources facilitating social scientists' data sharing. It was found that social scientists' data sharing behaviors are mainly driven by personal motivations (i.e., perceived career benefit and risk, perceived effort, and attitude toward data sharing) and perceived normative pressure. Funding agencies' pressure, journals' pressure, and availability of data repository were not found to be significant factors in influencing social scientists' data sharing. This research suggests that personal motivations and norm of data sharing currently support social scientists' data sharing; however, institutional pressures by funding agencies and journals and data repository need to be further encouraged to better facilitate social scientists' data sharing behaviors. Abstract: The predominant focus in research on organizations is on private or public institutions without consistent consideration of their interdependencies. The emphasis in scholarship on private or public interests has strengthened as disciplinary and professional knowledge has deepened: Management scholars, for example, tend to consider the corporation as the unit of analysis, whereas scholars of public policy often analyze governmental, multilateral, community, and nonprofit organizations. This article advocates a partial merging of these research agendas on the grounds that private and public interests cannot be fully understood if they are conceived independently. We review three major areas of activity today in which public and private interests interact in complex ways and maintain that current theories of organization science can be deployed to understand these interactions better. We also suggest that theories of public-private interaction require development and describe a concept called global sustainable value creation, which may be used to identify organizational and institutional configurations and strategies conducive to worldwide, intertemporal efficiency and value creation. We conclude that scholarship on organizations would advance if private-public interactions were evaluated by the criterion of global sustainable value creation, and we identify organizational research opportunities that jointly consider public and private interests.
