Abstract: This work proposed an integrated model incorporating review quality and quantity to explore the extent to which consumers adopt electronic word-of-mouth (e-WOM) information. A linear structural equation model was employed to analyze 435 valid responses and test it against the hypotheses. The empirical results suggest that in terms of e-WOM the influence of review quantity outweighs that of the review quality. Review consistency negatively correlates with informational influence. Consumers are alert to highly consistent reviews and may easily doubt ones that contain similar content. Furthermore, the relationship between perceived persuasiveness and social influence will not be inhibited by confirmation bias. Collapse

Abstract: Companies in platform-based business markets have widely embraced freemium business models where profit primarily depends on a minority of paying customers. However, the key challenge of these models is transitioning participants from free users to paying consumers. To encourage paid consumption, companies often rely on product differentiation such as providing consumers who pay for products or services with enhanced features. However, limited research has addressed how such product differentiation may convert consumers from “free” to “fee.” Our research examines the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game as a compelling example of a freemium platform-based business model. We contribute to the freemium literature by introducing three new MOBA-specific differentiations—character competency, character variety, and character-appearance differentiation. We also extend consumption values theory into a dual-path model to unveil the underlying mechanisms through which product differentiation influences in-game purchase. We empirically validate our dual-path model using data from a two-wave longitudinal experiment and three cross-sectional experiments. Our findings support opposing mediating paths for product differentiation in character competency and variety and indicate that these two types of differentiation can indeed undermine perceived game fairness. Conversely, character-appearance differentiation exerts only a positive influence on players’ purchasing of in-game items. Abstract: While today consumers benefit from personalised service offerings, they are also understandably concerned about the privacy risks generated by disclosing their personal information online. We know that such perceived risks in general shape behaviour, but we know little about what specific privacy risks obstruct the use of digital services, making it difficult to implement technologies that could mitigate these risks. Based on qualitative and quantitative studies involving over 1000 participants, we conceptualise and quantify a multidimensional perspective on privacy risks consisting of physical, social, resource-related, psychological, prosecution-related, career-related and freedom-related privacy risks. Our results explicate the prospects of distinguishing privacy risk dimensions by demonstrating how they are differently pronounced across contexts and how technology designs can be tailored to assuage them. Thus, our findings improve the understanding of context and service-specific privacy risks, helping managers to adjust their digital offerings to mitigate users' privacy risk perceptions. Collapse

Abstract: Solving urbanization problems, especially in developing countries, solely through the adoption of smartness in urban areas is insufficient as urbanization is mostly driven by the wide urban-rural economic gap. To narrow this gap, the adoption of smartness needs to be extended into rural areas. However, studies in that direction are still lacking. Therefore, we developed a theoretical model that explains the determinants of rural smartness and its subsequent consequences on rural economic welfare. We validated the model with survey data from 179 villages in West Java Province, Indonesia. The results suggest that rural smartness is determined by the interplay of organizational, environmental, and technological readiness, and has a strong positive impact on innovativeness which, in turn, improves the competitiveness of the rural business ecosystem. This model can serve as a reference for further studies of rural smartness and as the foundation for the design of information platforms supporting it. Collapse

Abstract: The success of open source software (OSS) projects depends on sustained contributions by developers who often display a wide variety of contribution patterns. Project leaders and stakeholders would strongly prefer that developers not only maintain but preferably increase their contributions over time as they gain experience. Corporations increasingly complement OSS developer motivations (such as fit in terms of shared values with the project community) by paying them to sustain contributions. However, practitioners argue whether payment helps or hurts projects because monetary compensation may dampen developer motivation in the long run, making it difficult for project leaders to understand what to expect from developers over time. Using Herzberg's motivation-hygiene framework, we explore how developers' perceptions of value fit with the project and being paid interact to determine the level of code contribution and its rate of change over time (i.e., growth). Using a survey of 564 developers across 431 projects on GitHub, we build a threelevel growth model explaining the code contribution and its growth over a six-month period. We find that value fit with the project positively influences both the level and growth of code contribution. However, there are notable differences among paid and unpaid developers in the impact of value fit on their level and growth in code contributions over time. The implications of our work will be of interest to researchers, practitioners, and organizations investing in open source projects. Business. Pratyush holds a PhD in information systems from the University of Pittsburgh. His research interests are interdisciplinary with a focus on the development, application, and impact of information systems. On the technology supply side, his work investigates how online collaboration communities can better develop technological artifacts such as open source software. On the demand side, he investigates factors that affect the adoption of IT, and the effect on user satisfaction and firm performance. In addition, he focuses on developing predictive-analytic tools to better utilize the strengths of the prediction-oriented approach (vis-à-vis the explanation-oriented approach) to create robust theory and policy. He has published in distinguished management research journals including the School of Business, University of Arkansas. He has published extensively in the information systems field, with over 300 refereed journal publications, with ten recent articles ranking him among the top four researchers globally. Dr. Grover has an h-index of 96 which is ranked in the top 5 in the field, and over 44,000 citations in Google Scholar. Thompson Reuters recognized him as one of 100 Highly Cited Scholars globally in all Business disciplines. He is senior editor for MISQ Executive, editor of the Journal of the Association for Information Systems Section on Path Breaking Research, and has served as senior editor for MIS Quarterly (2 terms), the Journal of the Association for Information Systems (2 terms), and The Data Base for Advances in Information Systems. Dr. Grover's current work focuses on the impacts of digitalization on individuals and organizations. Abstract: Despite extensive research on user behaviours in free-to-play games, what motivates users to purchase in-game items is still not well understood. We classify game affordances, gamer orientations, and in-game items into two dimensions according to the instrumental–hedonic dichotomy. Utilising the affordance theory, we propose that the fit between game affordances and gamer orientation determines game identification, whereas the fit between game identification and gamer orientations determines in-game purchases. We test the proposed model using a two-wave longitudinal survey. The results suggest that instrumental gamer orientation strengthens the relationship between instrumental game affordances and game identification as well as the relationship between game identification and instrumental in-game purchase. A hedonic gamer orientation strengthens the relationship between hedonic game affordances and game identification as well as the relationship between game identification and hedonic in-game purchases. This paper identifies different types of game affordances and gamer orientations and examines the interactions between the two, advancing the theoretical understanding of proactive behaviours in free-to-play games. Abstract: Mining is a dangerous job which takes place under several hundred meters deep mines and requires multiteam collaboration. Coal miners often encounter critical situations so that traditional coordination methods such as meetings are no longer applicable, and an implicit coordination mechanism needs to be established for front-line mining teams. Many scholars study implicit coordination in emergency management, while this research aims to explore the implicit coordination mechanism in mining teams. Besides, we analyze the impact of a large number of information technology applications (such as intelligent mining robots, intelligent mine system) on implicit coordination. Abstract: Driven by artificial intelligence (AI), in-home voice assistants (VA) emerge as an integral part of an individual's everyday life. As social structures and processes expand into a digital society, information system (IS) research started to examine this intertwinement and identified information technology (IT) identity as a concept to grasp IT use behavior. However, research on IT identity in connection with VAs is rare. To close this gap, we developed and empirically tested a conceptual model (n = 322 VA users). Our results show that symbolic value and hedonic motivation strengthen IT identity, while privacy concerns relate negatively. Moreover, IT identity enhances deep use and social presence and mediates the relationship between symbolic value/hedonic motivation and deep use/social presence. Our study provides critical theoretical and practical implications regarding use behavior and social presence of in-home VAs. Moreover, we contribute to a deeper understanding of IT identity. Abstract: Obsessive online social gaming has become a worldwide societal challenge that deserves more scholarly investigation. However, this issue has not received much attention in the information systems (IS) research community. Guided by dual-system theory, we theoretically derive a typology of obsessive technology use and contextually adapt it to conceptualize obsessive online social gaming. We also build upon identity theory to develop a dual-identity perspective (i.e., IT identity and social identity) of obsessive online social gaming. We test our research model using a longitudinal survey of 627 online social game users. Our results demonstrate that the typology of obsessive technology use comprises four interrelated types: impulsive use, compulsive use, excessive use, and addictive use. IT identity positively affects the four obsessive online social gaming archetypes and fully mediates the effect of social identity on obsessive online social gaming. The results also show that IT identity is predicted by embeddedness, self-efficacy, and instant gratification, whereas social identity is determined by group similarity, group familiarity, and intragroup communication. Our study contributes to the IS literature by proposing a typology of obsessive technology use, incorporating identity theory to provide a contextualized explanation of obsessive online social gaming and offering implications for addressing the societal challenge. Abstract: In Business Process Management, simulating business processes marks an essential analytic tool enabling organizations to prevent costly design and implementation flaws and to identify opportunities for process improvement. Despite a variety of simulation approaches and tools, surprisingly little is known about practitioners' use of business process simulation, and about requirements of (prospective) users for simulation approaches and tools. To contribute to a knowledge base informing future construction-oriented research, the present research-in-progress compiles and synthesizes related contributions investigating business process simulation in practice. Findings inform a large-scale empirical investigation to provide current insights into the actual use of business process simulation in practice and user requirements for simulation approaches and tools. In this short paper, we report an organizing summary of related work, the design of the survey instrument, an outlook on future work and a discussion of pending challenges. Collapse
