Abstract: Research in the “theory of the firm” tradition has often characterized firms as subeconomies, in which economic exchange is shaped by a central authority. We propose an expanded view of firms as subsocieties, in which authority is also responsible for establishing principles that shape cooperation among members. We draw on insights from political theory, sociology, and, to a lesser degree, legal theory to discuss how employees become members of subsocieties by exchanging rights, such as formal control over their work, for the benefits of membership. With this rights exchange, subsociety members develop expectations that those in positions of authority will use their control to define and sustain principles of justice and common purpose consistent with members’ moral sentiments. This view suggests expanded roles for authority and firm boundaries from what are incorporated into standard theories of the firm. These expanded roles have implications both for internal governance and for the boundary itself: When considering boundary changes, leaders must weigh both the economic and the social consequences of their decision. Abstract: Acknowledging the global relevance of controlling corruption, our study contributes to the existing body of literature by exploring the relationship between E-Government (EGOV) and Corruption Control at the EGOV subindices level. Toward this, we draw upon theoretical insights from Resource-Based View (RBV), Media Lit eracy Theory, Agency Theory, Information Quality, and Transaction Cost Theory to derive a set of testable hypotheses. Using a panel dataset comprising 102 countries, we employ a Linear Mixed Effects (LME) estimation method to thoroughly investigate and uncover the relative effectiveness of EGOV subindices in controlling corruption. Accordingly, we draw implications for theory, praxis and future research. Collapse

Abstract: Policymakers and analysts are heavily promoting data marketplaces to foster data trading between companies. Existing business model literature covers individually owned, multilateral data marketplaces. However, these particular types of data marketplaces hardly reach commercial exploitation. This paper develops business model archetypes for the full array of data marketplace types, ranging from private to independent ownership and from a hierarchical to a market orientation. Through exploratory interviews and case analyses, we create a business model taxonomy. Patterns in our taxonomy reveal four business model archetypes. We find that privately-owned data marketplaces with hierarchical orientation apply the aggregating data marketplace archetype. Consortium-owned data marketplaces apply the archetypes of aggregating data marketplace with additional brokering service and consulting data marketplace. Independently owned data marketplaces with market orientation apply the facilitating data marketplace archetype. Our results provide a basis for configurational theory that explains the performance of data marketplace business models. Our results also provide a basis for specifying boundary conditions for theory on data marketplace business models, as, for instance, the importance of network effects differs strongly between the archetypes. Abstract: The successful adoption of interorganizational systems (IOSs), such as blockchains or electronic data interchanges, in interfirm networks requires timely and accurate sharing of information about these roll-outs. In reality, however, the early stages of IOS adoption are characterized by information asymmetries that can arise due to a separation between firms that select and develop the IOS, and firms that implement it. This often results in staggered and asymmetric flows of information that can engender strategic information withholding behaviors. Drawing upon resource and network-based views, we study how the technological modularity of networked firms can affect these behaviors. Interestingly, we find that high levels of technological modularity can render firms more susceptible to opportunistic information withholding by network partners. Our findings run counter to the traditional view of modularity as a capability that can improve the efficiency of IOS adoption, or as a governance mechanism that reduces risks associated with IOS adoption. We find that network density and embeddedness can mitigate the opportunistic risks of technological modularity, whereas network topology can have diverging effects. In a rapidly changing and interconnected business environment where flexibility is key, modularity is often hailed as a foundational pillar of information technology systems of the future. As optimism and investments toward modularity grow, by identifying associated risks, our work cautions managers to adopt a more qualified view of this capability during technological transitions. Abstract: Although property-rights theory has long been used to explain firms’ ownership of resources, research on the channels through which property rights affect heterogeneous firms’ investment in building resources remains scarce. Leveraging a property-law enactment in China, we find that strengthening property-rights protection leads private firms to make greater intangible and tangible asset investment compared with state-owned firms and that these effects are mediated by external equity and debt financing. Further, we unpack resource heterogeneity by explicating key differences between intangible and tangible assets, and we document an alignment between asset intangibility and financing approaches such that for intangible asset investment, equity plays a larger mediation role, whereas for tangible asset investment, debt’s mediating effect is greater. We contribute to the strategy literature by using property-rights theory to link together asset intangibility and financing approaches and by showing that the strength of property-rights protection affects firms’ resource investment and shapes firm heterogeneity. Abstract: As online group buying (OGB) businesses increasingly face strong competition, understanding the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors of their customers is critical. Hence, the purpose of this study is to understand why customers choose one OGB vendor over others. By extending the transaction cost economics (TCE) theory, we explain OGB customers’ purchase behavior. We conducted a two-stage online survey. The first survey (T1) captured the perceptions of the respondents before making a purchase (i.e., purchase intention and its antecedents, namely unpredictability, trust, customizability, and frequency of OGB use). In the second stage (T2), we collected responses from the participants of the first study who committed at least one purchase in the last month. The second survey collected responses about the frequency of OGB use, purchase behavior, and online customer review (OCR). Data were analyzed with partial-least-square-based structural equation modelling technique (PLS-SEM). Results suggest that unpredictability, trust, and customizability influence purchase intention and are influenced by the frequency of OGB use. In addition, customizability decreases unpredictability. Finally, in seeking an answer to how to convert potential customers into actual customers, we found that OCR is a moderator of the relationship between purchase intention and purchase behavior. The findings from the longitudinal study extend TCE theory in electronic markets by capturing the OGB dynamics (i.e., antecedents and effects), the mediating effects (i.e., purchase intention) and the moderating effect (i.e., OCR) in a robust nomological relationship. Abstract: It has been argued that the theory borrowing practices in IS research have become workmanlike—appropriate and effective, but lacking innovation. This concern is particularly salient at a time when digital phenomena are profoundly transforming society. Therefore, it is legitimate to ask: Are our theory borrowing practices hampering our ability to grapple with revolutionary developments in IS, and if so, what can be done? Through an investigation of the field’s borrowing of transaction cost economics theory, we find extant IS research largely (1) borrows for theory testing within the IS context, (2) develops models that uninspiringly reflect the borrowed theory, and (3) treats the IS as an exogenous actor. In this article, we propose an alternative approach to theory borrowing, inspired by conceptual blending theory. Our approach focuses on the structural nature of IS phenomena and borrowed theories. Such a structure-based approach can reveal correspondence between IS phenomena and unexpected reference theories while also highlighting discrepancies that serve as an opportunity for novel integrations of an information system into the reference theory. We contend that this approach can infuse flexibility into our theory borrowing practices in ways that will increase our capacity for developing innovative explanations of emerging phenomena. Abstract: Although sharing is not a new subject, sharing behavior enabled by peer-to-peer software technologies is a recent phenomenon. Studies have explored the impact of the sharing economy on consumers by applying the theory of planned behavior, complexity theory, and social exchange theory, but few studies have explored transaction costs in the sharing economy. By integrating network externalities with transaction cost theory, this study ex plores transaction costs and their determinants in the context of the sharing economy. Structural equation modeling analysis was conducted on data from 375 users of Airbnb. The findings indicate that personalization of asset specificity and transaction frequency negatively influence transaction costs. Additionally, learning of asset specificity and transaction uncertainty positively affects transaction costs, which in turn influence behavioral intention. Furthermore, perceived complementarity has a direct effect on transaction uncertainty. Finally, the number of users moderates the relationship between transaction costs and behavioral intention. This under standing will assist managers in numerous industries impacted by the rapid development of the sharing economy by providing them with strategies for coping with this trend. Collapse
