Abstract: As organizations have become increasingly reliant on information systems, senior managers are keen in assessing the progress of implemented information security strategies. Although the balanced scorecard approach has been suggested for security governance, a critical issue affecting information security practitioners is complexity, as there are many standards and frameworks, with duplication and overlaps to adhere to when organizing the data. Consequently, the article attempts to develop a more inclusive framework for information security governance, a research gap recently identified in the literature. The article maps five governance and control frameworks (COBIT, SABSA, ISG, ITIL, and ISO 27000) to the information security balanced scorecard (InfoSec BSC) to develop a conceptual design of an effective information security performance measurement tool that can be used by senior managers. Using a real-life case application and interviews with a panel of experts, the article identifies IS initiatives, performance measures for each of the mapped objectives derived from governance and control frameworks that may provide guidance for practitioners. Abstract: Maturity models are essential tools to evaluate Industry 4.0 readiness. However, they have limitations in supporting organizational strategies over time and are insufficient to create company-specific Industry 4.0 roadmaps. This paper presents a research project to steer Industry 4.0 transformation in a leading paper pulp company listed on the Euronext Lisbon stock exchange. The contribution to the body of knowledge is a novel approach for Industry 4.0 adoption that extends the Balanced Scorecard with a fifth perspective and exposes the value of maturity model fragments: fractions of maturity models pertinent to a custom strategy. The proposed solution can support continuous improvement in long-term digital transformation strategies. Moreover, the lifecycle of maturity model fragments, namely, (1) dimensions and criteria elicitation, (2) personalization, and (3) strategic alignment, opens innovative prospects for maturity model design, tailorability, and practical relevance. Abstract: Technical Debt (TD) is a widely discussed metaphor in IT practice focused on increased short-term benefit in exchange for long-term ‘debt’. While it is primarily individuals or groups inside IT departments who make the decisions to take on TD, we find that the effects of TD stretch across the entire organisation. Decisions to take on TD should therefore concern a wider group. However, business leaders have traditionally lacked awareness of the effects of what they perceive to be ‘technology decisions’. To facilitate TD as groupbased decision-making, we review existing literature to develop a typology of the wider impacts of TD. The goal is to help technologists, non-technologists, and academics have a broader and shared understanding of TD and to facilitate more participatory and transparent technology-related decision making. We extend the typology to include a wider ‘outside in’ perspective and conclude by suggesting areas for further research. Collapse

Abstract: To support decision-making during the business model innovation process, researchers have investigated approaches for evaluating business models. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to business models can play an important role in evaluating the performance of business models, as they reflect the decisions and activities that drive the critical aspects of the organization. To date, there has been considerable research on business model KPIs. However, current research lacks an overall understanding of how business model KPIs are managed. Therefore, this paper aims to contribute with a classification of existing studies on business model KPIs in five categories relevant to KPI management, as well as future research avenues. In particular, we identify the development of methods and software tools to support selection, concretization, and reporting of business model KPIs, and the design of an integrated approach for business model KPI management as important areas for further research. Abstract: Agile software development, a paradigm that emphasizes project team autonomy and the value of responding to changes over following standardized processes, has gained prominence in the software industry. Prior investigations on the adoptions of agile paradigms for software operations and their performance implications have typically focused on isolated aspects of software development processes. In this study, we adopt a configurational perspective of software operations and assess the causal impacts of adopting an organizational policy that grants higher levels of autonomy to project teams. Building on the equifinality framework proposed in organizational studies, we posit that an organizational policy that provides higher levels of autonomy for software teams engenders performance-enhancing adaptations through agile reconfigurations of project operations. To test our hypothesis, we collaborated with a commercial software firm and collected data from a policy experiment at the firm. We examined project-level data spanning a four-year observation period during which the firm implemented a new policy that significantly reduced the hurdles for project teams to autonomously reconfigure their operations. The results support our postulation and shed light on how an organizational policy that provides greater autonomy to software. Collapse

Abstract: Many contemporary organizations depend on team-based organizing to achieve high performance, innovate services and products, and adapt to environmental turbulence. Significant research focuses on understanding how teams develop, assimilate, and apply diverse information; yet, organizational practices have evolved in new ways that are not fully explored in the teams literature. Individuals with diverse motivations, knowledge, and perspectives are often assigned to teams, creating burdens for members to develop effective ways to work together, learn from each other, and achieve goals amid the complexity of today’s organizational contexts. In this paper, we examine a multilevel model of how team goal orientation affects cross-understanding—the extent to which team members understand the other members’ mental models—which in turn, affects team and individual performance. We examine these effects using 160 teams of 859 participants who completed a semester-long business simulation. Findings show that the more team members are motivated by learning goals, the greater a team’s cross-understanding and subsequent team and individual performance. These effects are dampened when members are motivated by performance goals—to avoid mistakes or prove competence. This study expands the cross-understanding literature, revealing motivational antecedents that explain why some teams develop higher cross-understanding than others. We also contribute to the goal orientation literature by demonstrating that team goal orientation influences members’ learning about other members and in so doing, also affects team and individual performance. Because team motivation can be influenced by organizational practices, our findings also contribute practical insights for organizational leaders. Collapse

Abstract: Although Business Process Management (BPM) scholars frequently refer to the importance of aligning employee appraisals and rewards with processes, little is known about how the BPM discipline relates to these human resource aspects. We therefore conducted an exploratory case study in an internationally oriented organization with high BPM maturity to acquire a deeper understanding with the first-hand practices. We first elaborate on how the case organization includes behavioural and results-related components into its appraisals and performance management approach to improve employee alignment and process performance. Afterwards, we explain how and for which processrelated elements employees get rewarded and recognized. As academic implications, we build two preliminary frameworks that lay the foundation for further research. Abstract: This paper explores the concept of business model management, defined as a generic process covering all phases of the business model lifecycle. In contrast to previous business model literature, which is mainly focused on the design of business models, we argue that the successful exploitation of the business model concept requires a dedicated management approach. Due to the lack of extant research in the domain, we build on multiple, exploratory case studies of large organizations, based on 20 expert interviews. This paper contributes to a better understanding of the current practices and needs in business model management and the multifaceted role of the business model concept in each of its phases. Abstract: Previous research has proposed different types for and contingency factors affecting information technology governance. Yet, in spite of this valuable work, it is still unclear through what mechanisms IT governance affects organizational performance. We make a detailed argument for the mediation of strategic alignment in this process. Strategic alignment remains a top priority for business and IT executives, but theory-based empirical research on the relative importance of the factors affecting strategic alignment is still lagging. By consolidating strategic alignment and IT governance models, this research proposes a nomological model showing how organizational value is created through IT governance mechanisms. Our research model draws upon the resource-based view of the firm and provides guidance on how strategic alignment can mediate the effectiveness of IT governance on organizational performance. As such, it contributes to the knowledge bases of both alignment and IT governance literatures. Using dyadic data collected from 131 Taiwanese companies (cross-validated with archival data from 72 firms), we uncover a positive, significant, and impactful linkage between IT governance mechanisms and strategic alignment and, further, between strategic alignment and organizational performance. We also show that the effect of IT governance mechanisms on organizational performance is fully mediated by strategic alignment. Besides making contributions to construct and measure items in this domain, this research contributes to the theory base by integrating and extending the literature on IT governance and strategic alignment, both of which have long been recognized as critical for achieving organizational goals.
