Abstract: Digital entrepreneurship is one of the most important and impactful forms of entrepreneurship. However, the majority of digital start-ups fail to scale, despite their potential to achieve growth. Moreover, what constitutes growth is significantly different for start-ups as compared with established firms: they have limited financial performance, and their growth cannot be accurately measured by metrics such as customers, revenues, profits, and turnover at the early stages of the new venture creation process or before the start-up has reached sus­ tainability. Therefore, the first objective of this research is to contribute to the definition of growth by examining less tangible dimensions of growth. Moreover, the second objective is to identify the characteristics of early-stage digital start-ups experiencing growth. Based on a mixed-methods approach, which combines an adapted Delphi study, a questionnaire-based survey, and a comparative case study, our results suggest that growing digital startups exhibit a set of characteristics that include: an agile culture combining clan with adhocracy; the ability to nurture their absorptive, innovative, and adaptive capabilities effectively; and a human capital with adequate entrepreneurial skills, emotional attachment to and fitness with the start-up. Abstract: As organizations have become increasingly reliant on information systems, senior managers are keen in assessing the progress of implemented information security strategies. Although the balanced scorecard approach has been suggested for security governance, a critical issue affecting information security practitioners is complexity, as there are many standards and frameworks, with duplication and overlaps to adhere to when organizing the data. Consequently, the article attempts to develop a more inclusive framework for information security governance, a research gap recently identified in the literature. The article maps five governance and control frameworks (COBIT, SABSA, ISG, ITIL, and ISO 27000) to the information security balanced scorecard (InfoSec BSC) to develop a conceptual design of an effective information security performance measurement tool that can be used by senior managers. Using a real-life case application and interviews with a panel of experts, the article identifies IS initiatives, performance measures for each of the mapped objectives derived from governance and control frameworks that may provide guidance for practitioners. Abstract: Although organizational factors related to big data analytics (BDA) and its performance have been studied extensively, the number of failed BDA projects continues to rise. The quality of BDA information is a commonly cited factor in explanations for such failures and could prove key to improving project performance. Using the resource-based view (RBV) lens, data analytics literature, business strategy control, and an empirical setup of two studies based on marketing and information technology managerial data, we draw on the dimensions of the balanced scorecard (BSC) as an integrating framework of BDA organizational factors. Specifically, we tested a model –from two different perspectives– that would explain information quality through analytical talent and organizations’ data plan alignment. Results showed that both managers have a different understanding of what information quality is. The characteristics that make marketing a better informer of information quality are identified. In addition, hybrid (embedded) type analyst placements are seen to achieve better performance. Moreover, we add greater theoretical rigour by incorporating the moderating effect of the use of big data ana­ lytics in companies. Finally, the BSC provided a greater causal understanding of the resources and capabilities within a data strategy. Collapse

Abstract: Maturity models are essential tools to evaluate Industry 4.0 readiness. However, they have limitations in supporting organizational strategies over time and are insufficient to create company-specific Industry 4.0 roadmaps. This paper presents a research project to steer Industry 4.0 transformation in a leading paper pulp company listed on the Euronext Lisbon stock exchange. The contribution to the body of knowledge is a novel approach for Industry 4.0 adoption that extends the Balanced Scorecard with a fifth perspective and exposes the value of maturity model fragments: fractions of maturity models pertinent to a custom strategy. The proposed solution can support continuous improvement in long-term digital transformation strategies. Moreover, the lifecycle of maturity model fragments, namely, (1) dimensions and criteria elicitation, (2) personalization, and (3) strategic alignment, opens innovative prospects for maturity model design, tailorability, and practical relevance. Abstract: Technical Debt (TD) is a widely discussed metaphor in IT practice focused on increased short-term benefit in exchange for long-term ‘debt’. While it is primarily individuals or groups inside IT departments who make the decisions to take on TD, we find that the effects of TD stretch across the entire organisation. Decisions to take on TD should therefore concern a wider group. However, business leaders have traditionally lacked awareness of the effects of what they perceive to be ‘technology decisions’. To facilitate TD as groupbased decision-making, we review existing literature to develop a typology of the wider impacts of TD. The goal is to help technologists, non-technologists, and academics have a broader and shared understanding of TD and to facilitate more participatory and transparent technology-related decision making. We extend the typology to include a wider ‘outside in’ perspective and conclude by suggesting areas for further research. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations strive to develop a variety of capabilities to improve and measure business processes. Researchers have used various maturity models to investigate the development of a business process orientation (BPO), and most have argued that such a development comes in stages. Current literature underestimates the interrelationships between BPO capabilities and fails to consider multidimensional or non-linear paths to maturity. To refine the features of maturity models, this study relies on configuration theory to uncover different archetypes for BPO development and quantitatively evaluate them by examining performance differences among archetypes based on a large-scale international dataset. The resulting empirical taxonomy with seven BPO archetypes establishes important performance differences between organizations at a similar maturity level. Besides strengthening the theoretical foundations of BPO and making maturity assessments more multifaceted, the results help organizations give their managerial efforts a focus by enabling comparison with peers in the same archetype and showing various paths for BPO improvement. Abstract: To support decision-making during the business model innovation process, researchers have investigated approaches for evaluating business models. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to business models can play an important role in evaluating the performance of business models, as they reflect the decisions and activities that drive the critical aspects of the organization. To date, there has been considerable research on business model KPIs. However, current research lacks an overall understanding of how business model KPIs are managed. Therefore, this paper aims to contribute with a classification of existing studies on business model KPIs in five categories relevant to KPI management, as well as future research avenues. In particular, we identify the development of methods and software tools to support selection, concretization, and reporting of business model KPIs, and the design of an integrated approach for business model KPI management as important areas for further research. Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has fueled attention towards strategic decisions on business value, crisis responses, and social aspects. Correspondingly, there is an urgent need for identifying relevant key performance indicators (KPIs) to support the decision-making process and survive from exogenous shocks. The paper focuses on the cultural sector, one of the social and economic sectors that has faced severe disruption by the pandemic. The objective of this study is to conduct a literature review on KPIs, especially for organizations in the cultural sector, with relevance to massive data and crisis response. The research results indicate the novel balanced scorecard covering the perspectives of finance, customers, web, social media, and crisis responses for crisis-ready organizations. Abstract: Many studies have examined the relationship between employee ownership and firm productivity. However, research is lacking on how this relationship is strengthened or weakened by environmental characteristics. This is a critical oversight in the employee ownership literature because industry characteristics can significantly influence employees’ expected gains from their firm ownership. Thus, based on agency theory and expectancy theory, we develop a multilevel contingency model of employee ownership with industry growth and instability as boundary conditions. We test the proposed model with a sample of 573 firms in South Korea (Study 1: 1,415 firm years) and a sample of 892 firms in 28 European countries (Study 2: 4,768 firm years). In both studies, we find that employee ownership does not significantly contribute to firm productivity on its own. However, we find a significant three-way interaction effect of employee ownership, industry growth, and industry instability on firm productivity. Specifically, employee ownership is most effective at improving firm productivity when both industry growth and industry instability are high. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of the findings. Collapse

Abstract: Agile software development, a paradigm that emphasizes project team autonomy and the value of responding to changes over following standardized processes, has gained prominence in the software industry. Prior investigations on the adoptions of agile paradigms for software operations and their performance implications have typically focused on isolated aspects of software development processes. In this study, we adopt a configurational perspective of software operations and assess the causal impacts of adopting an organizational policy that grants higher levels of autonomy to project teams. Building on the equifinality framework proposed in organizational studies, we posit that an organizational policy that provides higher levels of autonomy for software teams engenders performance-enhancing adaptations through agile reconfigurations of project operations. To test our hypothesis, we collaborated with a commercial software firm and collected data from a policy experiment at the firm. We examined project-level data spanning a four-year observation period during which the firm implemented a new policy that significantly reduced the hurdles for project teams to autonomously reconfigure their operations. The results support our postulation and shed light on how an organizational policy that provides greater autonomy to software. Collapse
