Abstract: The rise of metaverse platforms pave the path for a future where many human activities will be conducted in a virtual reality (VR). Therefore, it is necessary to investigate whether and how users emotionally respond to fully digitalized realities when conducting daily activities. In this study, we focus on two core features: immersion and sense of embodiment through self-motion. We conduct a large-scale experiment to examine the effects of virtual realities on emotional traits (PANAS). We use high (VR head-mounted-display) and low (PC monitor) immersive environments, as well as different levels of self-motion (high/low), compared to a 2D control. Students (N=183) were randomly assigned in one of 5 virtual conditions to complete a daily non-emotionally charged task. Two analyses were conducted based on the same experiment. The findings indicate that immersion and embodiment are not direct emotional elicitors on their own, and affect valence and arousal are likely content related. Collapse

Abstract: After facing the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations request their employees to work from home permanently. For an organization, this provides positive benefits such as reducing costs for rent. From an employee perspective, working from home can cause a feeling of isolation towards co-workers and lower attachment to an organization. One way to counteract this problem is to transfer the office to the digital world, especially spurred by the metaverse discussion to represent processes of our real world in digital environments that allow us to do everything in the same way digitally as we are doing in the real world. In this paper, we present a theoretical model for conducting a 2x2 between-subject experiment to analyze how digital real-world meeting experiences influence team attachment and organizational commitment. We contribute to theories such as the need of belonging and transfer them to digital environments and provide practical implications for designing digital offices. Collapse

Abstract: Digitization offers several possibilities to alter consumer decisions to support social concerns. The objective of this study is to examine the impact of personalized digital social norm nudges on consumer decisions enriched with the theory of warm glow on e-grocery buying decisions with the aim of supporting social projects. Specific pro-social behaviors targeted were supporting fair payment of the producers of grocery goods, social inclusion projects and initiatives against poverty by deciding for a specific choice option. A between-subjects experiment was performed with the help of a questionnaire using a mock-up mobile grocery store to measure product choices. Results showed that claims supporting pro-social initiatives have a significant impact on buying decisions. Perceived product recommendation influenced our model positively, while we had a negative price impact. The study suggests that warm glow theory and enriched social norm nudges are effective tools for behavior change towards social initiatives. Collapse

Abstract: This paper investigates how social cues, used to anthropomorphize assistance systems (ASs), like conversational agents, influences the behavior of users. We find that anthropomorphizing, in our case by giving them a voice, increases social presence, and, in turn, empathy and trust. Yet, we argue that social presence also has negative impacts. We propose-and empirically proof-that a higher social presence also leads to a stronger feeling of being observed. This, in contrary to our hypothesis, results in lower investments. In addition, we found a trend of higher enjoyment with increasing feeling of being observed. This result emphasis the complexity of creating and designing ASs. Through the invocation of social presence anthropomorphizing might have negative and positive effects on outcome variables. Collapse

Abstract: The metaverse offers promising opportunities to enhance the experiences in virtual meetings. However, its limitations have led to the emergence of virtual hybrid meetings. This meeting format uses virtual conference rooms accessible via head-mounted displays (HMD) and 2D video interfaces. Given the limited research on virtual hybrid meetings, an exploratory approach is needed to determine key perspectives and dimensions. This short paper initiates a discussion on how hybrid meetings impact meeting experiences, focusing on employee collaboration. We also shed light on the role of user embodiment in shaping meeting experiences. Our early insights lay the groundwork for future investigations, which will explore how hybrid meetings can foster a sense of togetherness and boost well-being as well as group performance. Thereby, we support companies to implement metaverse meetings while addressing constraints such as cost and health concerns, ultimately enhancing meeting experience and productivity. Collapse

Abstract: Prior information system research remains inconsistent of the effects of system certifications. In their current use, certifications are often reduced to graphical seals. This approach fails to incorporate detailed assurance information emanating from the certification process. To address this gap, we adopt a design science approach and deploy a four-phase research design to clarify how to design impactful IS certification presentations. First, we identify sources of users' limited understanding of seals and formulate a design proposal for a certification presentation by drawing upon the elaboration likelihood model. In the second phase, we formulate and validate a set of design meta-requirements and guidelines to improve certification presentation, using cognitive load theory and Toulmin's model of argumentation as kernel theories. In the third phase, new certification presentations that comply with the proposed guidelines are developed and evaluated for their effectiveness. We show that presentations that augment seal-based certification presentations with richer assurance information improve certification effectiveness. This increases users' assurance and trust perceptions when the presentations align with the users' cognitive information processing needs in ways that reduce their cognitive load and enhance argument quality of assurance information. Abstract: In this paper, we explore the decoy effect in recommendation systems. Including a decoy item in a set of alternatives can influence the attractiveness of the other items by facilitating decision making. Prior research literature has indeed shown the decoy effect to be robust in traditional choice settings, with consistent reporting of an overall positive impact. Practitioners often use decoys to help drive demand for specific items. Recommendation systems too are increasingly being used to present item choice sets to customers and users. Both recommendation systems and the decoy effect can be used as strategies to help facilitate decision making. However, previous work has not examined the decoy effect in the context of recommendations. The decoy effect may facilitate consumer decision making and positively impact user behavior when used with recommendation systems. However, in the recommendation context, customers often have different expectations for the reliability and quality of the presented information. Hence, a decoy as a recommendation could signal issues in system reliability, resulting in a negative effect. We perform a randomized, controlled laboratory experiment and use persuasion theory as the theoretical lens to demonstrate that the decoy effect works differently in the context of recommendation systems. Specifically, we show that depending on the recommendation context, the decoy effect can or cannot drive demand for target items. We find that including a decoy minimizes the demand for the target option when personalized recommendations are presented, which deviates from the traditional decoy effect. However, a decoy increases the target’s demand when nonpersonalized recommendations are shown, following the conventional decoy effect. We explore the mechanism behind these findings and show the robustness of our results by conducting multiple analyses and additional experiments. The findings of our paper have important implications for the design of recommendation systems and our understanding of consumer decision making. Abstract: While blood products are a critical resource in healthcare systems, providing sufficient blood products is a worldwide challenge, especially so since the COVID-19 pandemic. As easy and timely access to information is crucial to convince (potential) donors to change their behaviour and become regular donors, chatbots can offer fast and easy access to information whenever (potential) donors need it. Due to their human-like design, chatbots can help motivating and convincing users to donate blood regularly to work against the ongoing, post-pandemic challenges in providing sufficient blood supply. Based on previous findings, we assume that users' perception of a blood donation chatbot can vary worldwide, in relation to the incorporated design features. As part of a design science study, we conducted an online between-subject experiment with participants from USA, Germany, South Africa and India. We could show a significant negative moderating effect of horizontal individualism in terms of the chatbot's individualistic conversation style and the perceived similarity in social group membership, implicating the so-called "contribution conflict" with regard to IS and culture. Abstract: The increasing need for organ donations remains a worldwide challenge as transplant waiting lists grow and donation rates persist at constant levels. The increasing popularity of conversational agents (CAs) has prompted new strategies for educating and persuading individuals to adjust their cognitive and behavioral beliefs and become donors. However, how CAs should be designed to modify uninformed users' intention to donate remains unclear. Against this background, we conducted an online experiment (N=134) to examine the impact of a human-like CA design on users' intention to become organ donors. Based on the three-factor theory of anthropomorphism and the elaboration likelihood model, we derive three theoretical mechanisms to understand the influence of a CAs human-like design on users' intention to donate. The findings show that perceived anthropomorphism does not directly impact persuasion and empathy but is mediated via perceived usefulness to influence the intention to donate. Collapse

Abstract: Reimbursement of repair costs is a way to motivate customers to keep defective products instead of returning them. However, there is no research-based guidance on how retailers should frame repair costs reimbursement offers in terms of who decides on the size of the reimbursement and makes the offer-an employee or a machine. To guide further IS research and suggest ways that help e-commerce businesses to improve repair costs reimbursement effectiveness to decrease product return rates, the present research draws on literature on offer sources and on insights from a qualitative and an experimental study. We find that artificial intelligence-based (vs. human-based) repair costs reimbursement offers promote fairness perceptions, which, in turn, affect important customer outcomes-the likelihood to accept the offer and digital negative word of mouth.
