Abstract: Though human-like design can increase favorable social behaviors like familiarity and acceptance, it can also question the technology’s effectiveness, rationality, and functionality. With capabilities that allow technology to become more and more human-like, researchers and practitioners continue to delve over the efficacy and deployment of humanness in design. In this research paper, we measure positive and negative perceptions towards different levels of humanness among an emerging form of digital character: the virtual influencer. In doing so, we assess the efficacy of human-like design among virtual influencers by manipulating their visual realism and measuring the effect of this manipulation on their credibility and persuasiveness. Our experimental design also allows us to explore the existence of the uncanny valley in a novel technological context. Collapse

Abstract: Digitization offers several possibilities to alter consumer decisions to support social concerns. The objective of this study is to examine the impact of personalized digital social norm nudges on consumer decisions enriched with the theory of warm glow on e-grocery buying decisions with the aim of supporting social projects. Specific pro-social behaviors targeted were supporting fair payment of the producers of grocery goods, social inclusion projects and initiatives against poverty by deciding for a specific choice option. A between-subjects experiment was performed with the help of a questionnaire using a mock-up mobile grocery store to measure product choices. Results showed that claims supporting pro-social initiatives have a significant impact on buying decisions. Perceived product recommendation influenced our model positively, while we had a negative price impact. The study suggests that warm glow theory and enriched social norm nudges are effective tools for behavior change towards social initiatives. Collapse

Abstract: The current study sought to extend the Affective Technology Acceptance (ATA) model to human-robot interactions. We tested the direct relationship between affect and technology acceptance of a security robot. Affect was measured using a multi-method approach, which included a self-report survey, as well as sentiment analysis, and response length of written responses. Results revealed that participants who experienced positive affect were more likely to accept technology. However, the significance and direction of the relationship between negative affect and technology acceptance was measurement dependent. Additionally, positive and negative sentiment words accounted for unique variance in technology acceptance, after controlling for self-reported affect. This study demonstrates that affect is an important contributing factor in human-robot interaction research, and using a multi-method approach allows for a richer, more complete understanding of how human feelings influence robot acceptance. Abstract: Data quality is an important topic for businesses and therefore requires appropriate analysis tools. Although several rule-based systems exist today for quality measurement, their results do not always reflect the real impact of quality issues on practical data usability and are therefore not well-suited to base economic decisions on. This work practically implements and evaluates an alternative, cost-based approach for data quality analysis starting from a ‘fitness for use’-perspective. The practical impact of completeness and representational consistency of data stored in an integrated relational database is investigated in an experiment with 218 volunteers. Two alternative versions of this database are then prepared by manually improving their data quality. Participants are randomly assigned to one of three databases and are given a set of questions to resolve by means of SQL. As questions are resolved, we measure several cost-based indicators such as ability to solve, time to solve and number of attempts. Results indicate that the impact of data quality issues can differ significantly from what would be expected when using rule-based measurement. Effects range from almost no impact to a 65% reduction in time needed to solve tasks. Effect sizes up to 0.43 using one-way ANCOVA tests are observed. Collapse

Abstract: The use of electronic health records (EHRs) offers many benefits, but users are also critical of them because of concerns about privacy and the sensitivity of health data. Given the ambiguity of data sensitivity, we examine which characteristics of health data influence users' upload behavior, and which are perceived as sensitive. A semi-structured interview (N=30) was conducted to locate characteristics of health data, which influence the user's upload behavior. These characteristics were then empirically evaluated in a user study (N=50). The complexity of diseases and their stigmatization potential are characteristics which influence the uploading behavior. We verify empirically that the uploading of health data is rejected when there is a high potential for stigmatization, while it is accepted when the complexity of the disease increases. Health data are considered by users to have different sensitivities, relative to stigmatization potential. Privacy Calculus regarding EHRs should consider these characteristics of health data. Abstract: Individuals are increasingly confronted with transactions and decisions in digital environments. This shift in consumption behaviour and context has a high potential to influence operational business processes in various fields such as the grocery retail industry and contribute towards more sustainable operations across different levels. Accordingly, organizations need to identify opportunities to actively influence the purchase behaviour of consumers in line with social, economic and ecological objectives. Therefore, based on a threefold research approach, we develop and test several digital nudges to influence customer decision-making in the context of online grocery sustainability. First, digital nudge principles and instantiations are deduced from theory, before we develop several digital nudges and test their perception effectiveness by means of an eye-tracking experiment. Finally, the most effective nudge designs are employed in a sophisticated online-experiment, empirically indicating the significant value of hyperbolic discounting and anchoring for influencing e-grocery delivery preferences. Abstract: While the efficiency of AI in decision making has been confirmed in the literature, the effectiveness of AI decision making is less studied. To address this research void, we examine the effectiveness of AI using data collected from a leading technology company that applies both AI and human in the high-potential talent identification process. The cross-sectional comparison of these employees' after-selection performance generates mixed results. While the AI-selected employees had higher contribution scores than their human-recommended peers, the human-recommended employees showed higher growth potential (proxied by promotion speed) and organizational commitment (proxied by turnover). Further analysis indicates that the AI-selected employees exhibited suboptimal performance on all three aspects when compared to the short-listed employees that were selected through an additional round of human evaluation. Jointly, these results suggest that AI can be an effective screening tool for identifying high-potential talents, but human instinct is essential for the final selection. Collapse

Abstract: This study examined the effects of financial incentives on security policy compliance. Participants were recruited for a computerized in-basket job simulation and randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) control group with no financial incentives for compliance; (2) positive frame (gain) group where participants could gain up to $5 for compliance; (3) negative frame (loss) group where participants were awarded $5, but would lose a portion with each compliance failure. Incentives increased individuals’ vigilance toward phishing emails and decreased likelihood of clicking on links, with the negative frame incentive having the strongest effects. Abstract: Truth-tellers and deceivers use justifications to bolster their credibility, but given their different motivations, truth-tellers and deceivers may use justifications differently. Participants were assigned the role of allocator or recipient in an ultimatum game. Allocators received money based on their performance on a task and made an offer. Recipients did not have information about allocator’s task performance or amount the allocator received, and therefore, allocators could deceive. Liars provided more plausible details to support their offer by stating the structure of their task; this strategy backfired and led to more detection of lies. Truth-tellers were more likely to disclose advantageous information about their endowment of money in their justifications, and this reduced suspicion in their offers. Deceivers used more wrap-up questions to end the interaction; this did not help reduce partner suspicion. Asking questions in general did not improve detection accuracy. Collapse

Abstract: One reason for market failure is the inherent complexity that excludes non-sophisticated users. Market complexity can be reduced by adapting the market rules or by simplifying the user interface. Just recently researchers started to address this topic and identified the need to merge market and interface design. Thus far it remains unclear how to design usercentric market interfaces. In a prediction market for economic variables, traders can customize their trading interface according to their informational needs. Surprisingly, we show that on average an increase in information reduces trading performance. An explanation for this effect might lie in cognitive theory. Displaying more information increases the participants’ cognitive load and hence might reduce trading performance. We are able to distinguish between trading behaviour and performance and thereby provide insight into the interplay between information and decision making. Finally, we also track the influence of individual information elements and identify those that improve or decrease trading performance. Collapse
