Abstract: California has a unique climate that is suitable for growing a variety of agricultural crops. As stated by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, California's agricultural abundance includes more than 400 commodities, and of these, over a third of the vegetables and three-quarters of the fruits and nuts consumed in the United States, are grown in California. Mark Gaskell, Ph.D., a California Cooperative Extension Farm Advisor, recently began an experiment to grow coffee plants; he believed that due to changing climatic conditions, California farmers could begin to grow coffee plants in their fields. Several farmers agreed to experiment as well and found that the plants did indeed grow. The issue, however, is that farmers would like to know if they can reliably plant coffee on their farms and sustain coffee production for years to come. As a result, this study will utilize the maximum entropy approach, a wellestablished algorithm for modeling habitat suitability over geographical domains, to measure the impact of future climate change on the sustainability of growing coffee plants in California in the years ahead. Layers of worldwide climate data, that represent 19 bioclimatic variables, will be utilized in this study. WorldClim is an online repository that contains historic, monthly, meteorological data averaged across 30 years as well as climate data representing possible future conditions based on various climate prediction models. While this study is focusing on the impact of climate change on coffee plants, it is expected the methodological processes developed, and the resultant findings will be applicable to a wide variety of agricultural crops. Abstract: Contributions by individual open source software (OSS) community members are the lifeblood of the OSS projects that power today's digital economy and are important for the very survival of such communities. Individual contributions by OSS community members to others' projects and their own determine whether OSS communities are resilient in the face of major shocks. Arguably, if crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic prompt users to reduce their contributions to others' projects relative to the contributions to their own projects, such behavior can have implications for the overall resilience of the OSS community. Therefore, whether and how individuals change their contributions in the face of a crisis is an important question. We examine whether members in an OSS community increased or decreased their contributions to others' projects relative to their own in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, a sudden and unexpected global health-related shock that has affected almost everyone. We also compare and contrast this behavior when the OSS community faced increasing unemployment, an economic cyclic shock that is arguably and relatively more personal. Drawing on the concept of prosocial behavior and conservation of resources (COR) theory, we hypothesize that the pandemic increased OSS community members' contributions to others' projects relative to their own; on the other hand, the threat of rising unemployment decreased OSS community members' contributions to others' projects relative to their own. Our empirical analyses of a longitudinal dataset of over 18,000 OSS community members on GitHub, with more than 1.4 million member-day observations, support our hypotheses. This study contributes by uncovering the differential effects of exogenous health-related and economic shocks on the resilience of the OSS community. We conclude with a discussion of our findings' implications for OSS community resilience. Collapse

Abstract: Online photographs govern an individual’s choices across a variety of contexts. In sharing arrangements, facial appearance has been shown to affect the desire to collaborate, interest to explore a listing, and even willingness to pay for a stay. Because of the ubiquity of online images and their influence on social attitudes, it seems crucial to be able to control these aspects. The present study examines the effect of different photographic self-disclosures on the provider’s perceptions and willingness to accept a potential cosharer. The findings from our experiment in the accommodation-sharing context suggest social attraction mediates the effect of photographic selfdisclosures on willingness to host. Implications of the results for IS research and practitioners are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: We study a self-reinforcing process, dubbed "Red Queen," consisting of actions and reactions of competitors in the digital commerce of experience goods. Based on our analysis of the package tours sold by 114 travel agencies on the world's largest online platform for travel - Trip.com, the findings suggest that, in markets where a seller's reputation is low, incremental innovations in existing products may boost sales, and that a seller operating in markets with high levels of rivalry would be better off with a middleof-the-road posture for radical innovations such as developing new products. These practical insights can help the sellers of experience goods strategize what, how, and where to innovate in order to beat competition and improve performance in digital commerce. Meanwhile, the study also contributes to an evolutionary perspective on competition in digital commerce and helps expand the scope of Red Queen research in the digital economy. Collapse

Abstract: This paper extends niche theory to develop an intraorganizational conceptualization of the niche that is grounded in the activities of organizational members. We construe niches as positions in a mapping of individuals to formal and informal activities within organizations. We posit that positional characteristics in this activity-based system are critical determinants of members’ access to information and relationships—two of the vital resources for advancement in organizations. Because activities are difficult to observe, we propose a novel empirical strategy to depict niches: we exploit a census of memberships in electronic mailing lists. We assess three niche dimensions—competitive crowding, status, and diversity—and show that these attributes affect the allocation of rewards to employees. Propositions are tested in two empirical settings: an information services firm and the R&D division of a biopharmaceutical company. Results indicate that people in competitively crowded niches had lower levels of attainment, whereas those in high status and diverse niches enjoyed higher attainment levels. We conclude with a discussion of email distribution lists as a tool for organizational research. Collapse

Abstract: Distinct types of collective intelligence are prominent over different countries. This study explores why some types of collective intelligence knowledge services flourish in some countries but not in others by employing an analogy related to Darwin’s evolutionary theory. This study uses geographical isolation theory and Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory (such as the uncertainty avoidance index) to explain dominant collective intelligence knowledge services across countries. This study proposes that uncertainty avoidance moderates relationships between four motivations (intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, internal self-concept-based motivation, and external self-concept-based motivation) as well as knowledge-sharing behavior in different knowledge-sharing types (encyclopedia type and Q&A type). An online survey of 214 collective intelligence knowledge service authors was conducted to test the research model. This study’s results show that uncertainty avoidance affected knowledge-sharing behavior, which is the different forms that authors in different knowledge-sharing types use to share their knowledge. Abstract: Studies show that blending multiple categories rather than fitting one category cleanly undermines the appeal of market offerings, but in science and technology, blending multiple categories has been a formula for creating important new categories like nanotechnology. What enables such blends to earn approval and become recognized as new categories? We argue that reactions to category blending are affected by both micro and macro factors. Specifically, blend reactions are affected at the micro level by cognitive limits, especially as blends are repeated, and at the macro level by domain-specific logics for judging quality. Using data on nanotechnology patents, we test this argument by analyzing two dimensions of approval: time to approval and citations by subsequent patents. In addition to showing that blending has different effects on these two dimensions of approval, our findings suggest that reactions to blending are moderated, as argued, by (1) institutional logics that value novel combinations and (2) the repetition of blends that came to define nanotechnology. Our study contributes to theory by linking approval of category blends to cognitive limitations and cultural and institutional logics of evaluation. Collapse

Abstract: The discourse around media choice has generated a diverse array of media choice factors originating from both the media-based and social interaction-based approaches. The multitude of these factors hints at the adaptive nature of media choice. Alas, how a user engages with such factors and adaptively carries out media choice has remained understudied. We undertake a field study to explore the role of a plurality of choice factors and their interactions in shaping media choice processes and outcomes. In particular, we focus on how a user identifies relationships among plural choice factors while he or she works on his or her particular choice resulting in a similar outcome – email – given a large number of alternatives. Drawing upon a theory of affordances, we propose a systemic way of narrating the dynamics of media choice as a multi-dimensional process where a user explores her or his surroundings – a niche – as to establish media affordances that will then help her or him achieve a communication goal. We identify five relational patterns of interactions among specific choice factors: reciprocity, emergence, complementarity, re-exploration and actualisation. These patterns are shown to be emergent and highly interdependent. We conclude by reviewing future research avenues to formulate richer ‘ecological’ accounts of media choice. Collapse

Abstract: This article is a response to the assessment by IS scholars that there are significant research questions to be addressed in the important topic of information systems innovation. For example, Swanson concludes that current theory explains little about IS innovation; Avgerou describes it as a relatively unexplored subject, and Fichman identifies signs of exhaustion in the current research agenda. The result of our analysis is an adaptation of ecological systems theory (EST) in order to apply it to the IS innovation landscape. We then build on the theoretical framework to propose an agenda for future research in terms of research directions, research themes, and study designs. Finally, implications for researchers and practitioners are discussed. Collapse
