Abstract: eLoyalty provides a major competitive advantage for online businesses, however it is difficult to define. To understand the underlying mechanisms of eloyalty, a neuroimaging study was conducted, identifying possible "neural" activations that point to antecedents of the users' eloyalty. Our results show that antecedents to eloyalty might be associated with an activation of the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC), and the right orbitofrontal/ventromedial cortex. Furthermore, a non-hypothesized deactivation of the left superior dorsomedial PFC was identified. This activation pattern can be related to increased pleasantness and reward attribution of the target website, as well as higher associated familiarity and user preference. Based on this it is discussed that antecedents to eloyalty may be associated with neural lock-in effects. These lock-in effects may be elicited through continuous, positive, and pleasant user experiences which ultimately lead to an emotional attachment that is "neurally encoded" into the user's brain. Abstract: This paper explores the mobile payment phenomenon from SME perspectives in the Kenyan retail sector. Following a qualitative approach, and in-depth interviews, the study concludes that the contextual challenges of Kenya have rendered other forms of mobile payment such as making contactless payments, unknown. However, when other mobile payment options were made known, there was strong support for proximity mobile payments. The findings show that the introduction of any alternative mobile payment option in the Kenyan context would be a challenge against the stable trusted way of conducting mobile payments. It is recommended that strategies for building trust and customer awareness and adoption of alternative payment methods; be prerequisite towards new and alternative mobile payment options by retailers. Abstract: Based on 60,000 books (approx. 2m purchase decisions) from Amazon.de, we analyze the interplay of four e-tailers' communication practices – presenting product networks (recommendation systems), social features (eWOM, i.e. user-generated content), free trial, and vivid content – and demonstrate how they vary in effectiveness for influencing consumers’ purchase decisions online. Additionally, little is known about effects of these practices on driving sales across the sales distribution from bestsellers to niche products. Long tail theory predicts that consumers will become particularly attracted to buying niche products as those match personal preferences better than mainstream products. However, our large-sample results are partly counter to the theoretical predictions and previous studies in the field (as both bestsellers and niche products gain sales at the expense of medium popular products). We offer a clearer understanding of the varying functionality of online communication practices that helps retail managers select, combine and focus their communication practices. Collapse

Abstract: The literature on IS alignment is extensive, has developed significantly in the last twenty-five years, and is itself based on fifteen years of prior work exploring the strategic possibilities of information systems. Several important models have now been developed, but it is not always clear how they relate to each other. This can be problematic for practitioners, as it is not clear how, and indeed when, alignment can benefit an organization. It can be problematic for academics, in that gaps and areas for further research cannot be systematically identified. Furthermore, most alignment studies are motivated by two considerations that have themselves changed over time. First, IS alignment can bring strategic benefits to an organization, and second, alignment is consistently ranked highly as a key issue for IS managers. Over twenty-five years, there have been several key developments in strategic theory, and the issues being addressed by IS managers have changed significantly. This article addresses both problems by providing a meta-model of alignment studies, based on their relationship to different strategic theories. It populates the meta-model with examples of previous studies and demonstrates how it can be used by practitioners and academics. Collapse

Mapping rules from computation independent model to platform independent model and from platform independent model to platform specific model were developed. This approach was demonstrated using an on-line bookshop application. Abstract: Despite huge incentives and investments in information technology (IT) standards, many firms still fail to fully benefit from their implementations. To explain such failures, we examine why some firms benefit more from IT standard implementation than others. Specifically, we look at the implementation of the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) from a technological diffusion perspective, and investigate under what contextual conditions the extent of XML implementation has the greatest effect on business process outcomes. Using empirical data from the publishing industry (N=188), we find that the extent of XML implementation impacts business process outcomes, and both business process radicalness of XML implementation and related XML knowledge play moderating roles. For information systems (IS) practice, this study helps managers direct their attention to the most promising factors and elaborates on their differential effects on business process outcomes. For IS research, it integrates innovation diffusion theory into our current knowledge of IT implementation and provides theoretical explanations for XML implementation successes and failures. Abstract: Many organizations have employed the concepts of ‘asset specificity’ and ‘uncertainty’ from transaction cost theory (TCT), and ‘strategic resources’ from the resource-based view (RBV) as drivers of their information systems (ISs) sourcing decisions. They, however, face a dilemma when TCT and the RBV suggest different sourcing alternatives. The study identifies contexts where sourcing decisions made based on these two theories differ, and examines which theory accounts better for an organization's sourcing decisions. Results show that a high-specificity asset is a major driver of sourcing decisions. It overpowers the effects of uncertainty on sourcing decisions; while a non-strategic resource has no impact on sourcing decisions. In particular, where the two theories make conflicting predictions, organizations should not always outsource non-strategic resources. Non-strategic resources that involve high specificity should be retained internally. The paper concludes with implications for academics and practitioners, and a discussion of future research directions. Collapse

Abstract: Perceptions regarding an online store, developed after a brief study of the website, can significantly influence somebody’s attitude towards purchasing at that store. These perceptions are collectively characterised as an “online store image.” Our research developed reliable and valid measures for the components of an online store image, and examined the relationships of these components to attitudes and intentions to purchase online. Conceptually, the paper relied on the relatively established literature on “traditional” store image and technology acceptance research. Empirically, we focused on the store images of two online bookstores. Following standard processes for instrument development, we conducted two rounds of data collection (pilot sample, n=61; main sample, n=312) to assess reliability and validity. The paper presents multiple-item measurements for components of a store image: online store usefulness, enjoyment, ease of use, store style, familiarity, trustworthiness, and settlement performance. The components were regressed on attitudes and intentions towards purchasing at the online store, revealing significant, direct influences from usefulness, enjoyment, trustworthiness and settlement performance. Abstract: Many of the instruments to measure information and system quality were developed in the context of mainframe and PC-based technologies of yesteryears. With the proliferation of the Internet and World Wide Web applications, users are increasingly interfacing and interacting with web-based applications. It is, therefore, important to develop new instruments and scales, which are directly targeted to these new interfaces and applications. In this article, we report on the development of an instrument that captures key characteristics of web site quality from the user’s perspective. The 25-item instrument measures four dimensions of web quality: specific content, content quality, appearance and technical adequacy. While improvements are possible, the instrument exhibits excellent psychometric properties. The instrument would be useful to organizations and web designers as it provides an aggregate measure of web quality, and to researchers in related web research. Collapse
