Abstract: This paper draws on the cross-boundary ambidexterity theory to propose that four different R&D modes impact firm performance differently and that cooperative network structure moderates the above relationships. The theoretical model is tested by using financial and patent data of 587 high-tech firms for 10 consecutive years in China. We find that different R&D modes have different impacts on a firm’s financial and innovative performance, and network structure plays different moderating roles. Practically, this work guides high-tech enterprises to optimize their resource allocation, select the most appropriate R&D mode, and establish efficient cooperative networks. Collapse

Abstract: Firm relations, which inform the competitive environments of firms, are critical to firm operations and are often factored into investor decisions. Previous studies and practices have considered relatively stable and long-term business relations as an indicator of firm market value. Public news often reports on business relations, especially dynamic and short-term opportunities and challenges involving different partners. Learning about firm relations from news is commonly done by human investors but has not been studied systematically in previous research, leading to a research opportunity in market signaling via dynamic firm relations. In this study, we propose a new approach to market signaling by leveraging text-mining methods to extract cobenefit/counter-benefit networks based on firms’ mutual or conflicting interests in business events. We find that the resulting networks in the long term are partially aligned with firm cooperation and competition relationships, confirming their semantic implications for investor perception and attention. Our empirical study further shows that dynamic networks formed in a short time period (measured by firm centrality in networks) have significant impacts on firm equity value, after controlling for market activities and other information from news, such as volume, sentiment, and comentions. We show that dynamic networks can provide additional value in predicting firm equity value over stable networks. Moreover, the negative effects of counter-benefit networks emerge rapidly and persist longer than the positive effects of cobenefit networks. This study provides new insights into investor perception of news and suggests new research directions for financial text mining. Our research findings on market signaling via news-induced networks also have an impact on financial practices, such as market analysis and automatic trading. Collapse

Abstract: Blockchain technology, despite its origins as the underlying infrastructure for value transfer in the era of cryptocurrency, has been touted as the main disruptive force in modern businesses. Blockchain has the capacity to chronologically capture and store transactional data in a standardized and tamperproof format that is transparent to all stakeholders involved in the transaction. This, in turn, has prompted companies to rethink preexisting business practices, thereby yielding a myriad of fascinating business models anchored in blockchain technology. In this study, we advance contemporary knowledge of business applications of blockchain by drawing on the theoretical lens of the digital business model and value configuration to decipher how pioneers in this space are leveraging blockchain to create and capture value. Through a comparative, multiple case study approach, we analyzed five companies in mainland China that have rolled out blockchain initiatives. From our case analyses, we derived a typology of five blockchain-inspired business models, each of which embodies a distinctive logic for market differentiation. For each business model, we offer insights into its value creation logic, its value capturing mechanism, and the challenges that could threaten its longer-term viability. Grounded in our findings, we discuss key implications for theory and practice. Collapse

Abstract: The financial sector is facing radical transformation. Leveraging digital technologies to offer innovative services, FinTech start-ups are emerging in domains such as asset management, lending, or insurance. Despite increasing investments, the FinTech phenomenon is low on theoretical insights. So far, the offerings of FinTech start-ups have been predominantly investigated from a functional perspective. As a functional perspective does not suffice to fully understand the offerings of FinTech start-ups, we propose a taxonomy of non-functional characteristics. Thereby, we restrict our analysis to consumer-oriented FinTech start-ups. Our taxonomy includes 15 dimensions structured along the perspectives interaction, data, and monetization. We demonstrate the applicability of our taxonomy by classifying the offerings of 227 FinTech start-ups and by identifying archetypes via a cluster analysis. Our taxonomy contributes to the descriptive knowledge on FinTech start-ups, enabling researchers and practitioners to analyze the service offerings of FinTech start-up in a structured manner. Abstract: a b s t r a c tBased on five types of trust, this research explores trust influencing factors in peer-to-peer interpersonal communication, group communication and mass communication. Previous research has mainly focused on trust and the corresponding antecedents in electronic commerce communication and online collaboration. This study extends the literature on trust influencing factors in social media communication. A trust traffic light model is used to illustrate the importance of keywords, drawn from interviews with 115 participants who use WeChat frequently. Salient trust factors were found and further elaborated through qualitative analysis. Furthermore, we developed a trust cognitive onion model to illustrate the interactions of trust factors. Abstract: Cooperation visualisation is used for planning, coordinating, and controlling enterprise cooperation within cross-organisational knowledge management. Visualisation is created using different modelling languages like BPMN 2.0. In this research paper we focus on the usability evaluation of cooperation visualisation in enterprises. We developed a usability evaluation framework and derived a model of hypotheses from it. This model is also linked to usability theory and verified with empirical results. Quantitative data from 432 managers with experience in using visualisation for enterprise cooperation has been collected and the causal model has been tested using the structure equation modelling method partial least squares. The empirical study reveals a critical path for usability evaluation of cooperation visualisation in enterprises. For theory, the impact of organisation properties and usage attributes on the usability of cooperation visualisation in enterprises is demonstrated. For practice, especially the user properties, further usage conditions, usage requirements, and usage variants are supporting the critical usability evaluation path and aid to improve management decisions, model interpretation and usability of cooperation visualisation in enterprises. Abstract: Online sellers in the e-marketplace cooperate with each other to increase resources and reduce transaction costs, both of which are crucial to the success of small businesses. A commonly used IT-enabled strategy is to ally with other online sellers by exchanging hyperlinks. This paper provides theoretical guidance to sellers on how to choose partners to improve reciprocity rates in hyperlink formation. Using the resource-based view and transaction-cost rationale, we examine the effects of market conditions and seller reputation on reciprocity link formation, using real transaction data from the largest online marketplace in China. The findings indicate that partners are less likely to exchange hyperlinks if the two sellers sharing a link are in highly overlapping markets and are geographically distant from one another, but the two factors weaken each other's negative effects. The study also explores the moderating effect of seller reputation, and finds that the negative effect of market commonality is weakened by seller reputation. The results of this study can be extended to other types of small business cooperation and are also useful to platform operators for designing mechanisms to encourage cooperation among online sellers. However, little research so far has explored the capabilities needed in order to innovate and implement e-service solutions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the antecedents of e-service innovation and its impact on a firm's performance outcomes of value cocreation and firm value. The main research method of this study is a quantitative survey and analysis. Our analysis of 119 financial service firms in Taiwan shows that the impact of e-service innovation on firm outcomes begins with e-service and cooperation capabilities, and that the complementarity between these factors positively influences e-service innovation. Furthermore, e-service innovation exerts a positive effect on value cocreation, thereby improving firm value. Collapse

Abstract: The public sector has discovered cloud computing technologies and therefore demands an adequate cloud provisioning model. The community cloud seems to be a good balance between safety and trust as well as efficiency, cost reduction, and competitiveness for public facilities. Following this presumption, we analyzed the network potential for cooperation in the public sector. First, we reviewed the scientific literature around this concept and clarified the term ‘community cloud’. Then, we conducted a study of network theories to derive common values that are addressed in cooperation. We developed a framework that characterizes a network and assesses its specific network value. For evaluation purposes, we applied the framework to community cloud implementations in the public sector and discussed the results regarding the network value. The research findings reveal basic network values for community clouds in the public sector and will serve as analysis and assessment guidelines. Collapse
