Abstract: The following text sections provide an overview to the minitrack on the digital supply chain of the future. The minitrack addresses research questions concerning drivers and challenges of digital transformation, basic technologies, applications and services, digital platforms as well as cultural and organizational change etc. After a short introduction the different papers of the mini track are described and embedded into an overall context. Towards the end of our contribution, we added some recommendations concerning future research on digitalization of firms, business models and supply chains. Collapse

Abstract: Information technology (IT) is a critical resource and asset for a firm’s internal operations and external interactions with outside stakeholders. This paper explores IT capabilities that enable a retailer’s value chain activities and interfaces with suppliers and customers. IT capabilities that enable the value chain activities of logistics and operations as well as those of marketing and sales are identified to examine how they influence a retailer’s implementation of value chain interfaces. Through the lens of organizational information processing theory (OIPT), we find that both IT capabilities and IT infrastructure play a pivotal role in implementing value chain interfaces but in distinctive ways. On the supplier-facing side, a retailer’s IT infrastructure and IT capabilities enabling logistics and operations are essential to its vendor-managed inventory (VMI) system. On the customer-facing side, a retailer’s e-commerce website requires IT infrastructure and IT capabilities that enable marketing and sales. Moreover, synergies are found downstream for e-commerce website that benefits from the integration of IT infrastructure and IT capabilities enabling logistics and operations while such synergies are not found upstream for VMI. This partial complementary effect is explicated by the sequential asymmetric information dependency of value chain activities. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for the research and practice of IT enablement and integration. Collapse

Abstract: AI-based systems are increasingly deployed on organizational tasks, such as personnel selection decisions. As existing research indicates that applicants generally react negatively to the use of AI in personnel selection, this study examines how organizations can mitigate adverse reactions to fully exploit the benefits of AI. To obtain robust results, we recruited an online sample of German participants (N = 1,852) and presented them with various selection scenarios. Using a between-subject design, the process stage (preselection vs. interview) and the degree of process automation (augmented vs. automated) were manipulated. By employing a multidimensional conceptualization of transparency, we show that disclosure and accuracy positively impact procedural justice perceptions, a strong predictor of process quality assessment. This relationship is robust across selection contexts. Results indicate that applicants prefer AI for pre-selection and as human decision support, thus offering overall insights into design choices for AI in selection, optimizing applicant reactions. Abstract: Robotic Process Automation (RPA) has emerged as promising automation technology in recent years. Firms seize RPA for fast and cost-efficient low-code process automation implemented and maintained decentrally in the business units by subject matter experts (SMEs) without IT development experience. However, decentralized RPA projects are reported to frequently fail and be prone to challenges as SMEs struggle to meet their new roles and responsibilities, such as developers or testers. Yet, research lacks an understanding of how challenges related to SMEs' roles and responsibilities unfold and how to address these challenges when executing decentralized RPA projects. To this end, our study employs a Design Science Research approach, drawing on literature and 14 expert interviews, to (1) systematically synthesize the challenges related to SMEs' roles and responsibilities and (2) derive a software development framework for supporting SMEs in their new roles and responsibilities in decentralized RPA projects. Thus, our study contributes to RPA and low-code development research and provides SMEs with guidelines to navigate decentralized RPA projects in practice. Collapse

Abstract: For increasing sustainability and mitigating climate change, corporate carbon risk management (CCRM) can be a key enabler. As we outline in this paper, companies currently lack processes and approaches in practice to actively manage complex risks caused by carbon emissions in the form of a comprehensive CCRM. To address this issue and to combine the contributions of currently separate research streams, e.g., corporate carbon accounting and corporate risk management, we develop a taxonomy that illustrates characteristics of IS-based solutions that foster an active CCRM. While our taxonomy builds on a systematic literature review, we evaluate our results with expert interviews. We conclude that CCRM is a complex field in which IS can provide significant support at many stages. Thereby, our taxonomy also contributes to Green IS research and acts as guidance for practitioners. Moreover, we discuss how Blockchains and Artificial Intelligence can pave the way towards targetoriented CCRM in companies. Collapse

Abstract: In this study, we explore prominent contemporary technology trajectories in the software industry and how they are expected to influence the work in the software industry. Consequently, we build on cultural lag theory to analyze how technological changes affect work in software development. We present the results from a series of expert interviews that were analyzed using the Gioia method. Moreover, we identify a set of technology trends pertinent to software development from which we derive four main changes affecting the future of work in software development: (1) a shift toward scalable solutions, (2) increased emphasis on data, (3) convergence of IT and non-IT industries, and (4) the cloud as the dominant computing paradigm. Accordingly, this study contains insights into how technology (as an element of material culture) influences non-material culture, as exemplified by the work involved in software development. Abstract: Blockchain's inherent characteristics render it a promising solution in collaborative supply chain networks. However, the technology still faces challenges in coopetition, as sharing business data on blockchains requires balancing the benefits of data transparency for process automation with concerns about exposing business information to competitors. This paper draws on design science research to iteratively design and develop a decentralized infrastructure that can address the coopetition aspects of digital delivery invoices in construction supply chains. As a result, design objectives and design principles are derived while experts thoroughly evaluate the prototype. Practical guidance for implementing digital delivery invoices is provided to enable coopetitive while secure data exchange. Our findings suggest that if construction companies want to prioritize network effects despite the growing complexity, they should establish channels and private data collections along with additional privacy-enhancing technologies to ensure secure data exchange across the entire supply chain. Abstract: Intelligent process automation is a technological innovation that combines symbolic automation tools with machine learning. Intelligent process automation can automate complex tasks that otherwise have to be performed by humans when symbolic automation is not powerful enough. Regardless of the high economic potential for companies, the adoption rate in practice is comparatively low. This could be due to the adoption behavior of the employees. In our work, we iteratively develop a Unified Theory of Acceptance and use of Technology (UTAUT) model for the adoption of intelligent process automation and evaluate it with an empirical study. With our research we want to empower designers to adapt the corresponding tools in the future to increase adoption. The study shows that, in addition to established factors for technology adoption, trust, transparency, and attitude towards technology are primary decision factors. Collapse

Abstract: Green information systems (green IS) have evolved and expanded over the years, now having a broad scope in organizations. Green IS in these organizations function to help to address climate change challenges. The growing complexity of green IS in organizations needs a conceptual framework that can articulate its different impacts at various levels while taking into consideration a holistic and integrated perspective. This research focuses on how to enhance and ensure green IS-driven green performance in organizations from an operant resources hierarchy perspective. A conceptual model is proposed to examine the role of management support for green initiatives and the role of information assurance in addressing IS misuse and process automation in relationship to green IS capability and green performance. The current study tests the effects of management support as composite operant resources and information assurance as interconnected operant resources for green IS capability in enhancing and ensuring organizations' green performance using a matched dataset of 73 organizations. We illustrate the application of the proposed conceptual model in two real-world scenarios. This study contributes theoretically by illustrating the application of the operant resources hierarchy perspective in green IS research and provides practical action suggestions for organizations adopting sustainable practices to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13.
