Abstract: Workarounds are goal-driven deviations from the standard operating procedures performed to overcome obstacles constraining day-to-day work. Despite starting as temporary fixes, they can become established across an organisation and trigger the innovation of processes and IT artefacts that can resolve misfits permanently. Although prior research has elicited antecedents and types of workarounds, it is not known how workarounds diffuse in an organisation and, thereby, innovating co-workers' activities, IT artefacts, and organisational structures. The results of our multiple two-year case study provide unique empirical insights into the diffusion of workarounds and how they can act as generative mechanisms for bottom-up process innovation. Abstract: As digital technology continues to advance, organizations require more flexibility to meet the needs of their customers and remain competitive. To do so, many incumbent organizations fundamentally change their established structures and processes to implement scaled-agile organizations (SAO), emulating digital organizations and leveraging development speed and customer focus. However, when everything changes, there are significant effects on the employees' identities. Thus, we explore how implementing an SAO affects employees' professional role identities (PRI). The paper follows a case study approach analyzing two cases with 21 interviews, observational, and secondary data collected over a period of 18 months. We contribute to the literature by identifying three effects of an SAO implementation on PRI (threat, empowerment, and extension) and describing how individuals react based on the effect on their PRI. We inform practitioners on the overall SAO implementation process and consequences for professionals, offering a new perspective on organizational transformation challenges. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations acknowledge that focusing on operational efficiency is insufficient to respond to disruptive forces and advances in digital technologies. Hence, business process management (BPM) needs to become more innovation-driven and capitalize on opportunities related to new products, services, and business models. Despite recent contributions, more research is required to strengthen the BPM capabilities of organizations in this direction. Following the design science research paradigm and situational method engineering, we develop a method to explore process design alternatives to support the implementation of a business model during its innovation. In this research-in-progress paper, we present the initial version of our method. With this research, we aim to contribute to explorative BPM by demonstrating how processes can support organizations in proactively creating value by enabling business model innovation. Our work also contributes to business model research and practice by providing actionable guidelines to implement a business model through the design of processes. Collapse

Abstract: To realize value from their wealth of digital data, organizations are investing in data-driven organizational initiatives—efforts in which they must draw expertise in data, algorithms, and visualization together with knowledge and skills in business domains such as marketing and human resources. However, they face the challenge of crossing the knowledge divide between analytics groups and business groups. Exploring relationships between the two groups in 37 data-driven organizational initiatives, we develop a configuration-based model that explains analytics and businessdomain knowledge integration through the lens of synergy. Our configurational analyses revealed five configurations of relationships between the two, which bring about two distinct change outcomes: “dedicated data groups” and “multidisciplinary teams” lead to the emergence of new datadriven ways to work, and “analytics institutionalization,” “analytics resource optimization,” and “networked communities” produce convergence, through the sharing of data-driven ways to work. Each configuration displays a distinct element of the core processes identified (“developing group connectedness,” “exchanging analytics and business domain knowledge,” and “incentivizing organizational data use”) and yields either an emergence or convergence of data-driven ways of working. The findings demonstrate how data-driven organizational initiatives can benefit from a pervasive form of organizing that entwines analytics groups and business groups such that their members’ tools, mindsets, and behaviors are merged to profoundly change ways of working. Together, these findings and the configurational methodology used provide a nuanced picture of how organizations integrate the requisite specialist knowledge across domains to realize value from data. Abstract: Problem definition: Data errors in business processes can be a source for exceptions and hamper business outcomes. Relevance: The paper proposes a method for analyzing data inaccuracy issues already at process design time, in order to support process designers by identifying process parts where data errors might remain unrecognized, so decisions could be taken based on inaccurate data. Methodology: The paper follows design science, developing a method as an artifact. The conceptual basis is the notion of data inaccuracy awareness – the ability to tell whether potential discrepancies between real and IS values may exist. Results: The method was implemented on top of a Petri net modeling tool and validated in a case study performed in a large manufacturing company of safety–critical systems. Managerial implications: Anticipating consequences of data inaccuracy already during process design can help avoiding them at runtime. Collapse

Abstract: Responsible AI (RAI) is an emerging topic in the Information Systems (IS) literature. RAI entails ensuring ethical, transparent, and accountable use of AI technologies in line with societal values, expectations, and norms. The challenge for research on IS education at university level is to accompany the growing research on RAI with approaches to educate students about this emerging theme. Research on IS education on responsible AI remains scarce to date, however. We ask: How can we design a course to educate students about responsible AI? We build on earlier research and an experiential learning-based approach to propose a course design promoting students' multidisciplinary, problembased learning about RAI applied to the case of public welfare services. Our study is based on participatory observations of student groups and group interviews after a project, acting as an arena where the students could reflect on the learning process and evolving awareness of RAI. Abstract: Information systems students need to be prepared to understand and manage unfolding dynamics in businesses operating in a digital world. We present a university course that systematically integrates knowledge from two streams of research that deal with dynamics: business process management and routine dynamics. Both streams of research study processes, dynamics, and change, but from different perspectives and with different methods and approaches. Our course synthesizes concepts, methods, and theories from routine dynamics with traditional business process management education, to provide students with competencies to not only design business processes but also recognize, explain, and react to process dynamics. We present two variants of our course design, which we implemented and delivered at two European universities to students who had different levels of prior knowledge about business process management. Abstract: The decision making process in a variety of organizations faces substantial changes, largely as a result of advances in information technology and artificial intelligence (AI). A considerable number of decisions that were traditionally made by humans, are now made by machines. Consequently, many jobs that were held by experts in some fields are now occupied by data scientists who can build AI algorithms. In this paper, we address this change in work environments and suggest an innovative process for hybrid decision making between humans and machines. Abstract: This study focused on the persistent use of technology-supported collaborative work practices. Using the lenses of the technology transition model and yield shift theory of satisfaction, we examined the effects of satisfaction with process, satisfaction with outcomes, and commitment to outcomes on persistent use of a collaborative work practice. We designed and facilitated technology-supported collaborative work practice sessions with three organizations for 152 respondents. Using structural equation modeling, we found satisfaction with outcomes was an important predictor of whether individuals committed to outcomes of technology-supported collaborative sessions. Moreover, when commitment was strong, individuals tended to persist in using the collaboration technology and work practices in the future. These results can assist designers and facilitators of meetings and collaborative work practices to focus on communicating the importance of the outcomes of meetings and how these outcomes can benefit individuals and their organizations. Abstract: Despite the rising importance of advanced data analytics, there is limited guidance on how organizations should leverage it. The benefits that an organization can gain through advanced data analytics depends on the organization’s ability to gain and use relevant capabilities. This study introduces a capability maturity model (ADA-CMM) for advanced data analytics to help organizations assess their current state of capabilities for managing advanced data analytics. We used the Delphi method to develop the maturity model and performed a survey to evaluate its validity. The results confirm that the maturity level of the advanced data analytics capabilities of organizations is positively related to the business value that they can capture from their use, which in turn found positively related to organizational performance. ADA-CMM can be used by organizations as a self-assessment tool and to create a roadmap for improving their relevant capabilities. Collapse
