Abstract: As healthcare organisations are looking for ways to improve their processes, process mining techniques are increasingly being used. Current process mining methods do not offer support for translating process mining insights into actionable improvement ideas. By performing action research at two healthcare organisations, we introduce and illustrate the INTEL funnel, a novel three-staged method consisting of process familiarisation, domain explanation and improvement ideation. Our method complements existing process mining methods and constitutes the first attempt to open the black box regarding the path from process mining insights to actionable process improvement ideas. In this way, it can contribute to a more systematic uptake of process mining in healthcare practice. Collapse

Abstract: We address cases where improvements in information technology for measurement and monitoring should result in regulatory relaxation, in contrast with much recent research, which focuses on situations where these improvements should result in increased regulatory restrictions on the actions permitted by large platform operators. We focus specifically on the problem of reducing environmental degradation, and we explore how regulatory restrictions associated with intellectual property (IP) rights should be relaxed in the presence of demonstrable reductions in environmental impact that result from improvements made by parties other than the owners of the IP. We explore how Environmental Impact Merit should be used to compel the owner of the IP to adopt improvements and to compel compensation to the improver. Future research will develop additional examples where regulatory relaxation is appropriate. Collapse

Abstract: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its impact on performance have generated a debate that has evolved across several perspectives (shareholder, stakeholder, resource-based, and contingency). Building on the resource-based and contingency perspectives, we shed new light on this debate by analyzing the impact of CSR on performance in emerging market firms, advancing the idea that CSR is a mechanism that helps address market and government failures. We first argue that CSR’s three constituent dimensions (environmental, social, and governance) vary in their impact on performance because each dimension has a different mitigating effect on contextual failures that hobble emerging market firms. Specifically, we contend that social CSR has a larger effect on performance than either governance CSR or environmental CSR for emerging market firms, because the former helps build capabilities that more directly reduce the negative consequences of government failures in the provision of public goods and services that firms need to operate efficiently. We then provide additional depth to this idea by arguing that other mechanisms used for mitigating market failures in an emerging market context, namely firm-level business group affiliation and country-level government policy nudges, strengthen this differential influence of each of the three dimensions of CSR on performance. Analyses of a sample of 89 publicly traded Indian firms from 2007 to 2017 support these arguments. Funding: A. Abstract: Recent research shows that people tend to avoid relying on artificial intelligence (AI) when making decisions at work. Although previous studies have investigated the causes and effects of this phenomenon, the role of attitudes, which are considered as a crucial factor in biased decision-making, remains unexplored. To investigate whether and how attitudes toward AI influence decision-making in work-related situations, we developed and conducted a lab experiment in which 156 participants received AI advice on process improvement while performing a manufacturing task. Our results suggest that negative attitudes toward AI are associated with greater reluctance to accept AI advice, resulting in lower performance in work-related situations. Furthermore, we show that human involvement in the process of providing AI advice cannot mitigate the negative effects of strong negative attitudes. Collapse

Abstract: Digital trace data, along with computational techniques to analyze them, provide novel means to study how organizational phenomena change over time. Yet, as digital traces typically lack context, it is challenging to explain why and how such changes take place. In this paper, we discuss temporal bracketing as an approach to integrate context into digital trace data-based research. We conceptualize a framework to apply temporal bracketing in the analysis of digital trace data. We showcase our framework on the grounds of data from an onboarding process of a financial institution in Central Europe. We point to several implications for computationally intensive theory development around change with digital trace data. Collapse

Abstract: The lack of effective team process is often noted as one of the key drivers of data science project inefficiencies and failures. To help address this challenge, this research reports on semi-structured interviews, across 16 organizations, which explored data science agile framework usage. While 62% of the organizations reported using an agile framework, none actually followed the Scrum Guide (or any other published framework), but rather, each organization had defined their own process that incorporated one or more aspects of Scrum. The other organizations used a proprietary / ad-hoc approach, often based on a proprietary data science life cycle. In short, while many data science teams are trying to be agile, they are adapting existing frameworks to work within a data science context. Future research could explore how data science teams can best achieve agility, perhaps via new agile frameworks that address the unique data science project management challenges. Collapse

Abstract: In this study, we analyse the value creation of Industry 4.0 (I40) technologies in flexible manufacturing (FM) under a sustainability perspective. I40 is a popular strategy that Western manufacturing organizations adopt to face competition from low-cost producers. Organizations adopting I40 use advanced digital technologies to make production processes more flexible and increasingly automated. Several pieces of evidence confirm how I40 leads to higher productivity and higher-quality products, improving the economic performance of organizations. However, increasing automation may also lead to the reduction of human labour in the production process, which may contribute to the disappearance of jobs, the reduction of expertise and the loss of know-how in manufacturing organizations. While the literature acknowledges the technical and economic advantages of I40, the sustainability of the value created through these technologies deserves further investigation. To address the gap, we complement the IT value theory with the concept of sustainability, including the three dimensions of economic, environmental and social sustainability. We perform a multiple case study analysis of four Italian manufacturing organizations that have successfully implemented I40 technologies in FM. The cases show that I40 technologies support sustainable organizational value when they are deployed with a worker-centric approach. In this condition, the organization leverages workforce activities to continuously fine-tune the technologies and to exploit the adaptive features of the technologies to continuously improve processes. Abstract: This paper investigates the impact of an active learning exercise designed to help undergraduate IT/IS (Information Technology/Information Systems) and business students recognize the importance of a common domain vocabulary for collaboration in the ambiguous settings which will be endemic in their careers as IT/IS professionals. We provide preliminary results to promote further research. We also investigated and assessed the robustness of our learning exercise with students with high exam performance and with low performance, and with students in the US and China, all showing improved recognition of the importance of a common domain vocabulary for collaboration. We present relevant literature, provide a detailed description of our active learning exercise, discuss our preliminary findings, identify limitations, and suggest future research. Collapse
