Abstract: In an era of heightened uncertainty and urgency around disruption, digital transformation has become a global priority on leadership agendas and garnered the attention of researchers across the Information Systems (IS) field. However, the ongoing acceleration of digital technologies not only poses great opportunities but also major challenges for organizations that use digital transformation as a means to survive. Yet, literature on how to successfully implement, manage, and sustain digital transformations that possibly change an organization's business model, along with its product offering, structure, and culture, is often vague and hence various assumptions can go unexamined. This panel report aggregates insights from an author development workshop on "Managing and Sustaining Digital Transformations" and provides different perspectives from six experts. Specifically, it adopts the problematization method to discuss ten commonly held assumptions regarding digital transformation and presents a research roadmap to guide digital transformation research in the future. Abstract: Although cloud computing is associated with organizational agility, anecdotal evidence points to resistance to cloud computing by employees in information technology (IT) units. We explored the links between software as a service (SaaS) and organizational agility by conducting two stages of interviews with key informants in large organizations, and by employing affordance and inertia-theoretical lenses. Two basic affordances emerged from the retroductive data analysis –implementing quickly and sourcing independently – which in turn yielded two higher-level affordances: trialing alternatives and self-organizing business teams. We developed a model that explains how and why these four affordances enhance agility by accelerating the sensing-toacting process of organizations. We also describe how five categories of organizational inertia in IT units hinder agility. Our main contribution is how adopting SaaS applications enables orga­ nizational agility while highlighting the role of IT unit inertia in SaaS affordance actualization processes. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations replace their legacy systems for technical, economic, and operational reasons. Replacement is a risky proposition, as high levels of technical and social inertia make these systems hard to withdraw. Failure to fully replace systems results in complex system architectures involving manifold hidden dependencies that carry technical debt. To understand how a process for replacing a complex legacy system unfolds and accumulates technical debt, we conducted an explanatory case study at a local manufacturing site that had struggled to replace its mission-critical legacy systems as part of the larger global company’s commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) system implementation. We approach the replacement as a sociotechnical change and leverage the punctuated sociotechnical information system change model in combination with the design-moves framework to analyze how the site balanced creating digital options, countering social inertia, and managing (architectural) technical debt. The findings generalize to a two-level (local/global) system-dynamics model delineating how replacing a deeply entrenched mission-critical system generates positive and negative feedback loops within and between social and technical changes at local and global levels. The loops, unless addressed, accrue technical debt that hinders legacy system discontinuance and gradually locks the organization into a debt-constrained state. The model helps managers anticipate challenges that accompany replacing highly entrenched systems and formulate effective strategies to address them. Collapse

Abstract: Acknowledging the global relevance of controlling corruption, our study contributes to the existing body of literature by exploring the relationship between E-Government (EGOV) and Corruption Control at the EGOV subindices level. Toward this, we draw upon theoretical insights from Resource-Based View (RBV), Media Lit­ eracy Theory, Agency Theory, Information Quality, and Transaction Cost Theory to derive a set of testable hypotheses. Using a panel dataset comprising 102 countries, we employ a Linear Mixed Effects (LME) estimation method to thoroughly investigate and uncover the relative effectiveness of EGOV subindices in controlling corruption. Abstract: This paper investigates how Critical Success Factors (CSFs) can be used to determine appropriate measurement items for design and assessment of ERP Maturity Models (ERPMMs). Our systematic literature review answers: RQ1 What are the primary dimensions of CSFs that can be used as measurement items for ERP maturity models? and RQ2 What are the additional dimensions of CSFs that can be used to evaluate the maturity of organisations using new generation ERP systems? Results reveal most ERPMMs can be categorised into specific CSF dimensions, and different sets of measurement items can be derived from these dimensions. The main contribution of this research is a CSF classification framework with eight dimensions: Governance, Culture, Technology, Operation, People, Project, Performance, and Products & Services. Our CSF classification framework will help researchers and practitioners to select a set of suitable CSF measurement items to assess maturity levels of organisations using new generation ERP systems. Abstract: The digital transformation of small businesses is different from larger businesses. Applying large business management approaches on a smaller scale may lead to missed opportunities to achieve meaningful digital transformation. In this paper, we explore what is the relevant design knowledge needed to guide small business digital transformation. To answer this question, we systematically reviewed small business and IS literature to identify seven key characteristics relevant to digital transformation. Based on these characteristics, we propose 20 mechanisms for small business digital transformation that are justified and illustrated using retrospective analysis of nine different cases across three continents. While some of the mechanisms are well known and relate to larger organizations, we also identified mechanisms that are unique to the small business context. With that, our contributions are twofold. We contribute to theory by identifying relevant design knowledge for small business digital transformation, and to practice by proposing mechanisms and real-world examples, especially for the design of small business platform providers. Abstract: In the financial services industry, many people assume blockchain to have significant impacts. From research and practice, we observe two main paradigms of how organizations interact with blockchain. First, organizations use blockchain to optimize existing processes (blockchain-based business process optimization (BPO)). Second, organizations use blockchain to disrupt existing processes, foster disintermediation, and enable disruptive business models (blockchain-based business process disruption (BPD)). However, we lack scientific research that evaluates its de facto potential. We bridge this gap by following a design science research approach to design blockchain-based business process re-engineering (BPRE) for a letter of credit that combines the advantages of BPO and BPD. We conduct three design cycles and develop three artefacts: a BPO, a BPD, and a BPRE approach. Our BPRE approach combines the advantages of partial disintermediation (i.e., increased efficiency and transparency) with the advantages of intermediaries (i.e., process flexibility, liquidity provision, and dispute mediation).
