Abstract: Due to climate change, hazardous events and disasters are going to become more frequent and intense, increasing disaster risk. Information Communication Technologies (ICT) can play a powerful role in building resilience in all the phases of the disaster cycle by stimulating collaboration and communication among different actors. However, there is a lack of studies that connect these fields of study. Thus, a resilient thinking approach that considers ICT and disaster is required to face these challenges. To identify resilience aspects promoted by ICT in case of disaster, this study conducted a content and bibliometric analysis, resulting in nineteen aspects. The findings contribute to the current discussion and help decision-makers in understanding how to implement an ICT that enhances resilience for communities affected by disasters. Collapse

Abstract: Practitioners design artifacts of different kinds. Researchers and practitioners both create methods for designing such artifacts. The question arises whether those methods are actually valid and useful. In this conceptual paper, we argue that there is a need for “method corroboration”—the deliberate and reflected use and possible validation of a design method. We present a literature review of method corroboration in the IS and more specifically in the DSR literature. The findings are summarized as a conceptual model outlining eight strategies of method use, which are then condensed into a 2-by-2 framework of method corroboration. The results of this paper present insight into the current state of method corroboration in the DSR field and provide guidance for working with design methods in research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: With prominent looming global issues such as climate change and COVID-19, public understanding of science (PUS) is increasingly perceived to be vital for humanity to address and adapt to global wicked challenges. Compared to conventional approaches that struggle with public engagement, games can potentially remedy this by proactively engaging players towards more fruitful performance in and outside games. While the employment of game-based approaches in pedagogy in general is not a new development, gamifying PUS has only recently grown to relative prominence for its superiority in engaging the public with active science-derived interpretation, deliberation, and consequent action. To understand the state-of-the-art of this field, we conduct a systematic descriptive literature review of the extant corpus. We reviewed 29 papers and investigated their types of interventions, contexts, populations, and outcomes. The results overall indicate diverse yet imbalanced research focuses thus far, for which we discuss implications for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Malicious web content includes phishing emails, social media posts, and websites that imitate legitimate sites. Phishing attacks are rising, and human-centered phishing risk mitigation is often an afterthought eclipsed by technical system-centric efforts like firewalls. Training tools can be deployed for combating phishing but often lack sufficient labeled training content. Using signal detection theory, this paper assesses the feasibility of using citizen science and crowdsourcing volunteers to label images for use in cybersecurity training tools. Crowd volunteer performance was compared to gold standard content and prior studies of Fortune 500 company employees. Findings show no significant statistical differences between crowd volunteers and corporate employees' performance on gold standard content in identifying phishing. Based on these findings, citizen scientists can be valuable for generating annotated images for cybersecurity training tools. Collapse

Abstract: Disruption of technologies, climate changes and epidemic crises have significantly affected individuals, organizations, and society. These phenomena force organizations to extend and innovate their business models to adapt to new circumstances. However, literature provides a limited coverage on how sustainable innovations ideas form and evaluate in practice. We thus focus on this issue in the present study. We used nominal focus group technique, C-K design theory for innovative design with citizen sciences as our study's lenses. Data collection was from three groups of 81 participants who live in three cities in the Ostrobothnia region of Finland. The findings illustrate the process of establishing a sustainable innovation management idea and lesson learned on how to facilitate innovation groups in practice. Collapse

Abstract: The UN COP26 2021 conference on climate change offers the chance for world leaders to take action and make urgent and meaningful commitments to reducing emissions and limit global temperatures to 1.5 ◦C above preindustrial levels by 2050. Whilst the political aspects and subsequent ramifications of these fundamental and critical decisions cannot be underestimated, there exists a technical perspective where digital and IS technology has a role to play in the monitoring of potential solutions, but also an integral element of climate change so­ lutions. We explore these aspects in this editorial article, offering a comprehensive opinion based insight to a multitude of diverse viewpoints that look at the many challenges through a technology lens. It is widely recognized that technology in all its forms, is an important and integral element of the solution, but industry and wider society also view technology as being part of the problem. Increasingly, researchers are referencing the importance of responsible digitalization to eliminate the significant levels of e-waste. The reality is that tech­ nology is an integral component of the global efforts to get to net zero, however, its adoption requires pragmatic tradeoffs as we transition from current behaviors to a more climate friendly society. Abstract: Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges facing society today, with potentially detrimental sustainability impacts on individuals, organisations, and societies. The impact of digital technologies on climate change is one of our key research priorities at the Digital Sustainability Knowledge Hub of the University of New South Wales, Australia. Building on digital sustainability research, we call for research contributions to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, as it could cause far-reaching disruptions to communities and the economy here in Australia and worldwide. In this article, we provide an overview of Australia’s perspectives and approaches to addressing climate change. Moreover, to encourage researchers to study and develop solutions, we propose future research directions focusing on climate resilience, climate-conscious citizen science, and orga­ nisations’ Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategies. Abstract: To solve societal problems, it is essential to engage with actual problem owners in society in a scalable way. In this paper, we follow a Citizen Design Science Research (CDSR) paradigm proposing to more actively involve society in DSR projects. Specifically, we present MyResearchChallenge.digital, a prototypical system that supports participatory problem discovery by enabling the involvement of citizens in problem awareness in a scalable way. The system allows researchers and citizens to cooperate on the exploration of a given problem space, leveraging the creativity and wisdom of the crowd for identifying and describing relevant DSR problems. The evaluation of the prototype with 30 representative citizens points to the system’s strengths and opportunities related to its ease of use and the problem articulation feature but also reveals weaknesses and threats concerning the problem exploration features and issues about platform abuse. Abstract: Experimental research involving human participants has received an increasing interest in the Information Systems (IS) discipline. Much of today's experimental research is done with student participants, which comes with the advantage of easy availability and homogeneity of the sample. However, non-representative student samples are also often criticized due to limited generalizability. Thus, an important challenge is to engage citizens in experimental research following an open science paradigm. In this ongoing design science research project, we propose design requirements and design principles for public experimental terminals to increase engagement of citizens in experimental research. On this basis, we create an instantiation of an operational experimental terminal that can be deployed in the public space. With our research project, we present a novel approach to raise awareness and actively engage citizens in experimental research. Collapse
