Abstract: Many organizations have on-premises data storage systems that are evolving; among them is Big Data (BD). BD is a data storage system that can analyze large volumes, with velocity, and a variety of data. Per the Economist, data is now the most valuable resource. BD holds the promise of unlocking substantial parts. Many organizations want to implement BD but have not been able to. There is a need to identify key factors affecting adoptions for such organizations. The following factors are identified as (novel): data storage latency, ability to compute, data storage interface compatibilities, open-source software, and enterprisesourced software, or (under-studied): cost, perceived industry pressure, legislation barriers, and market turbulence. These factors were studied empirically with DOI and TOE by conducting a survey and performing quantitative PLS-SEM analysis. This analysis showed that these adoption factors are significant: data storage interface compatibility, open-source, enterprise-source software, cost, industry pressure, and market turbulence. Abstract: AI as a Service (AIaaS) is a promising path to leverage AI capabilities from the cloud. However, there is no one-size-fits-all service, but heterogenous service options since interdependent AIaaS characteristics require trade-offs. We lack knowledge on these tradeoffs and how they result from conflicting characteristics. Therefore, we interviewed 39 AIaaS providers, customers, and consultants to provide rich descriptions of interdependent characteristics and uncover resulting trade-offs and their consequences. This study contributes to a better understanding of the inner functioning and interplay of AIaaS characteristics and discusses how this complex nature of service offerings impacts providers' design and customers' selection decisions. Abstract: Cost-effective and responsible use of cloud computing resources (CCR) is on the business agenda of many companies. Despite this strategic goal, two geopolitical strategy decisions mainly influence the continuous existence of overcapacity: Europe's General Data Protection Regulation and the US's Cloud Act. Given the circumstances, a typical data center produces approximately 30% overcapacity annually. This overcapacity has severe environmental and economic consequences. Our work addresses this overcapacity by proposing a multi-sided platform for CCR trading. We initiate our research by conducting a literature review to explore the existing body of knowledge which indicates a lack of recent and evaluated platform design knowledge for CCR trading. We address this research gap by deriving design requirements and design principles. We instantiate and evaluate the design knowledge in a respective platform framework. Thus, we contribute to research and practice by deriving and evaluating design knowledge and proposing a platform framework. Collapse

Abstract: Although cloud computing is associated with organizational agility, anecdotal evidence points to resistance to cloud computing by employees in information technology (IT) units. We explored the links between software as a service (SaaS) and organizational agility by conducting two stages of interviews with key informants in large organizations, and by employing affordance and inertia-theoretical lenses. Two basic affordances emerged from the retroductive data analysis –implementing quickly and sourcing independently – which in turn yielded two higher-level affordances: trialing alternatives and self-organizing business teams. We developed a model that explains how and why these four affordances enhance agility by accelerating the sensing-toacting process of organizations. We also describe how five categories of organizational inertia in IT units hinder agility. Our main contribution is how adopting SaaS applications enables orga­ nizational agility while highlighting the role of IT unit inertia in SaaS affordance actualization processes. Collapse

Abstract: Previous literature has shown that the adoption of cloud computing improves the firm performance. However, the path through which cloud computing creates firm performance is not adequately answered in the literature. Adopting the Resource-Based View (RBV), we propose that cloud computing adoption creates operational capability for the firm, which will drive superior firm performance. We will use a two-stage econometric model to test our chain hypothesis to understand better the impact of operational capability creation of cloud computing on the firm's performance. Moreover, we will investigate whether the presence of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) in the Top Management Team (TMT) moderates the operational capability of cloud computing. Collapse

Abstract: Continuous use of cloud computing and cloud sourcing has received limited research attention compared to cloud adoption. There are indications that cloud sourcing benefits are not easy to reap in continuous use for companies, calling for more research on the continuance use of cloud computing. The current study is one of the first studies of the continuance use of cloud computing processes at the organizational level, contributing to the management and business research literature on cloud computing. In particular, the present study has contributed with two case studies verifying the existence of barriers and more importantly identifying an additional type of barrier: management process barriers (MP), i.e., lack of objectives and strategies for cloud sourcing and lack of organizing cloud vendor communication. Overcoming or reducing management process barriers guides the continuance use of cloud computing process in a strategic direction for the company and enables cloud-related innovation. As a contribution, our research builds on and extends extant research by providing a TOMPE framework of barriers to the continuance use of cloud computing (based and modified from the technology–organization–environment (TOE) framework, by complementing it with the identified man­ agement process barriers). Abstract: Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) Cloud computing as the next stage of internet evolution provides all the computing resources as services over the Internet. In the SaaS cloud computing research area, there are many studies from the user’s point of view, but there is relatively little research on the supplier’s success strategy. The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the factors that determine the market competitiveness necessary for SaaS cloud computing providers to survive in the mid to long term. We presented application dimension and technology maturity as SaaS idiosyncratic factors and show how these factors influence the business performance of SaaS providers through a differentiation strategy and low-cost strategy. Using a multivariate latent growth curve model, this study analyzed 199 strategic business units of SaaS cloud computing providers in Korea for three years. Our results find that SaaS cloud computing idiosyncratic factors did not significantly enhance the software providers’ business performance in the early stage. However, they significantly affected the growth rate of their customer base and financial performance as the SaaS technology became mature over time. In addition, this study identifies a set of business, strategic, and technical considerations to guide the practitioners’ decision-making process for selecting an appropriate SaaS cloud computing model. Abstract: This study empirically investigates the economic impact of cloud service adoption on firm performance. We exploit the difference-in-differences models coupled with propensity score-based matching to estimate the per­ formance effect of cloud computing on worldwide listed firms that adopted cloud service during 2010–2016. The results indicate that cloud computing has a significant and positive impact on the profitability and market value of listed firms with varying degrees in both short and long time periods. In addition, the magnitude of the performance effect varies with firm size and industry type. This research contributes to empirical examination on the economic values of IT investments. Collapse

Abstract: To tackle climate change in the digital economy, there has been increasing attention to the role of information technology (IT) investment in decoupling economic growth from greenhouse gas emissions, or reducing carbon intensity. This research examines the impact of cloud computing on carbon intensity and further scrutinizes how the advent of cloud computing has altered the relationship between IT capital and carbon intensity. We combine data on IT capital stock for 51 countries during 1995-2014 with a natural experiment involving the staggered launches of cloud data centers across countries. Our preliminary findings suggest that cloud on-ramps availability is positively associated with carbon intensity, whereas it negatively moderates the impact of IT capital on carbon intensity. Taken together, our preliminary evidence implies that the environmental impact of cloud computing may not be as adverse as conjectured if we factor in its indirect effect on making overall IT capital greener.
