Abstract: A wait screen is one of the proactive mechanisms that have been suggested to manage online wait. Despite the presence of significant gender differences in traditional wait, a lack of studies in online wait context has been acknowledged. This study proposes a research model of online wait management based on the cognitive absorption theory and gender literature. We test the effects of online interface designs in a wait screen on waiting time perceptions across gender by manipulating the salience and framing of a progress cue. A total of 535 subjects participated in two controlled experiments. MANOVA and subsequent ANOVA tests were conducted. We found significant main and interaction effects of wait screen design cues and gender on the relationships between the design cues and cognitive absorption variables. Abstract: As online wait has become pervasive and its negative impacts on online users’ perception and behaviors were well recognized, a waiting screen is suggested as one of the proactive mechanisms to manage this concern. However, to date only a few studies have investigated how to develop an effective waiting screen. In addition, despite the presence of significant gender differences in traditional wait, a lack of studies of this aspect has been acknowledged in online wait context. This study proposes a research model of online wait management based on the theories of time perception and cognitive absorption theory to test the effects of waiting interfaces by manipulating the types of a progress cue and a background color on waiting time perception and gender in a simulated online context. Controlled experiments with the ANOVA and MANOVA tests will be conducted. Collapse

Abstract: Prior research shows that Social Network Sites (SNS) users who are concerned about personal privacy tend to disclose less information. However, in real-world settings, SNS users often fail to consider such concerns in their actual behavior, such as selfdisclosure. This phenomenon is known as the “privacy paradox” where individuals express high concerns about privacy but act in a contradictory way. Several theoretical approaches seek to explain this paradox. This paper extends this research by considering the holistic SNS experience. Drawing on published accounts in the press and prior work on cognitive absorption and privacy concerns, this paper proposes a theoretical framework that helps explain the privacy paradox. Specifically, it emphasizes the moderating effect of cognitive absorption on the relationship between privacy concerns and self-disclosure. Building on the privacy calculus theory, it also emphasizes the effect of cognitive absorption in magnifying perceived benefits and undermining perceived risks leading to increased self-disclosure. Abstract: As online retailers seek to attract customers through innovative electronic storefront designs, some are experimenting with three-dimensional (3D) websites. This study examines the influence of website dimensionality on cognitive absorption, perceived ease of use, and, indirectly, perceived website usefulness and intentions to buy online using the website. Findings indicate that shopping websites using 3D environments are associated with lower perceived ease of use and lower cognitive absorption, compared to traditional 2D websites. The effect of website dimensionality on cognitive absorption is moderated by user experience. The implications of the study for research and practice are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Long waits online undermine users' evaluations of Web sites and their providers, triggering abandonment behaviors. Yet e-business researchers and practitioners have not perfected mechanisms to respond to online wait issues. A filler interface that runs during the wait for search results may influence online users' perceived waiting time (PWT); however, no scientific investigation has attempted to design effective filler interfaces for managing online waits. By adopting resource allocation theory, cognitive absorption theory, and human computer interaction (HCI) theories (competition for attention, visual search, and motion effect), we design diverse filler interfaces and investigate their effects on antecedents of PWT. The proposed research model considers cognitive absorption factors such as temporal dissociation, focused immersion, and heighteneden joyment as antecedents of PWT, which in turn triggers three outcomes: affective appraisals, cognitive appraisals, and Web site use intention. A multistage, multimethod approach is used to test the research hypotheses. In the first stage, we compare a filler interface condition with a no-filler interface condition, and find the superiority of a filler interface with respect to inducing focused immersion and temporal dissociation.In the second stage, we conduct two controlled experiments to examine whether filler interfaces with various designs (varying the presence and relevance of image, text, and image motion) distinctly influence antecedents of PWT and confirm their distinctive effects on focused immersion, temporal dissociation, and heighteneden joyment. In addition, by conducting a structural equation modeling analysis, we find that our research model explains 51 percent, 51 percent, 44 percent, and 45 percent of the variance in PWT, affective appraisals,cognitive appraisals, and Web site use intention respectively.
