Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) is permeating all areas of life. However, connected devices are associated with substantial risks to users’ privacy, as they rely on the collection and exploitation of personal data. The case of connected cars demonstrates that these risks may be more profound in the IoT than in extant contexts, as both a user's informational and physical space are intruded. We leverage this unique setting to collect rich context-immersive interview (n = 33) and large-scale survey data (n = 791). Our work extends prior theory by providing a better understanding of the formation of users’ privacy risk perceptions, the effect such perceptions have on users’ willingness to share data, and how these relationships in turn are affected by inter-individual differences in individuals’ regulatory focus, thinking style, and institutional trust. Abstract: Online reviews, i.e., evaluations of products and services posted on websites, are ubiquitous. Prior research observed substantial variance in the language of such online reviews and linked it to downstream consequences like perceived helpfulness. However, the understanding of why the language of reviews varies is limited. This is problematic because it might have vital implications for the design of IT systems and user interactions. To improve the understanding of online review language, the paper proposes that consumers’ personality, as reflected in their political ideology, is a predictor of such online review language. Specifically, it is hypothesized that reviewers’ political ideology as measured by degree of conservatism on a liberal–conservative spectrum is negatively related to review depth (the number of words and the number of arguments in a review), cognitively complex language in reviews, diversity of arguments, and positive valence in language. Support for these hypotheses is obtained through the analysis of a unique dataset that links a sample of online reviews to reviewers’ political ideology as inferred from their online news consumption recorded in clickstream data. Abstract: Connected car services are rapidly diffusing as they promise to significantly enhance the overall driving experience. Because they rely on the collection and exploitation of car data, however, such services are associated with significant privacy risks. Following guidelines on contextualized theorizing, this paper examines how individuals perceive these risks and how their privacy risk perceptions in turn influence their decision-making, i.e., their willingness to share car data with the car manufacturer or other service providers. We conducted a multi-method study, including interviews and a survey in Germany. We found that individuals’ level of perceived privacy risk is determined by their evaluation of the general likelihood of IS-specific threats and the belief of personal exposure to such threats. Two cognitive factors, need for cognition and institutional trust, are found to moderate the effect that perceived privacy risk has on individuals’ willingness to share car data in exchange for connected car services. Abstract: One effective approach to fight fake news is to automatically filter it out using computational approaches. However, current approaches have neglected to identify the intention behind posting fake news leading to errors in flagging fake news. In this study, following the design science approach, we propose a novel deep-learning framework for detecting online fake news by incorporating theories of deceptive intention. Specifically, we first develop a transfer-learning model that identifies deceptive intention reflected in text and apply it to distinguish two subclasses of fake news: deceptive and non-deceptive fake news. Then, these two classes of fake news, along with an observed class of non-fake news (i.e., true news), are used to train deep bidirectional transformers whose goal is to determine news veracity. Our framework is empirically evaluated and benchmarked against cutting-edge deep learning models. Our analysis reveals that the models incorporating our deceptive-intention-based design significantly outperform state-of-theart baselines. Collapse

Abstract: This paper examines how Chief Executive Officers' (CEOs') cognition can shape firms' digital strategy orientation. Drawing on Ott and Eisenhardt's (2020) theoretical framework of decision weaving, we argue that CEOs' cognitive simplicity can be an integral factor in strategy shaping when opportunities around an organization are abundant and fleeting. Our findings show that CEOs who think persistently and coherently -in other words, simply -positively affect a focal firm's digital strategy orientation. We theorize that cognitive processes are influenced by cognitive biases such as CEO overconfidence, which positively moderates the relationship between cognitive simplicity and digital strategy orientation. Our results support the counterintuitive finding that cognitive simplicity contributes to greater digital strategy orientation and is reinforced by managerial overconfidence. Collapse

Abstract: Researchers and practitioners have long thought that web seals are effective means to improve a website's trustworthiness. However, studies demonstrated that web seals sometimes fail to exhibit the desired effect. Drawing on literature on cognitive complexity and the trust tipping point, this study investigates whether a website's default trustworthiness (i.e., the trustworthiness of a website without a web seal) may play a pivotal role in explaining the inconsistent findings. We conducted a randomized online experiment with 240 participants and found support for the assertion that below a certain level of trustworthiness (i.e., the trust tipping point), web seals show a significant effect on a website's trustworthiness. Yet, if the website's default trustworthiness is above the trust tipping point, web seals do not significantly increase a website's trustworthiness. Consequently, our study provides an unprecedented perspective on the effects of web seals on a website's trustworthiness by considering a website's default trustworthiness. Collapse

Abstract: A long-standing question in the organizations literature is whether firms are better off by using simple or complex representations of their task environment. We address this question by developing a formal model of how firm performance depends on the process by which firms learn and use representations. Building on ideas from cognitive science, our model conceptualizes this process in terms of how firms construct a representation of the environment and then use that representation when making decisions. Our model identifies the optimal level of representational complexity as a function of (a) the environment’s complexity and uncertainty and (b) the firm’s experience and knowledge about the environment’s deep structure. We use this model to delineate the conditions under which firms should use simple versus complex representations; in doing so, we provide a coherent framework that integrates previous conflicting results on which type of representation leaves firms better off. Among other results, we show that the optimal representational complexity generally depends more on the firm’s knowledge about the environment than it does on the environment’s actual complexity. We also show that the relative advantage of heuristics vis-à-vis more complex representations critically depends on an unstated assumption of “informedness”: that managers can know what are the most relevant variables to pay attention to. We show that when this assumption does not hold, complex representations are usually better than simpler ones. Collapse

Abstract: Recently, the popularity of smart wearable technologies, such as Fitbit, has significantly increased. There are numerous potential benefits in using these devices, especially among seniors. Yet, little is known about seniors’ adoption behavior. Through a mixed-methods approach, this study investigates the factors that impact seniors’ intention to use wearable devices. Results from an online survey and interviews showed that seniors’ perception of the complexity of working with these devices is a barrier to their adoption decisions. Looking more deeply into the role of complexity revealed that seniors’ concern about the complexity of reading and interpreting the output of wearable devices is the main deterring element. Furthermore, we explored the role of two important elements: seniors’ cognitive age, and the influence of their subjective well-being on their adoption behavior. Results de monstrated that cognitive age does not significantly impact use intention by itself; nonetheless, subjective wellbeing moderates its effect. This result revealed an interesting finding, which is that the influence of cognitive age on seniors’ use intention depends on seniors’ level of subjective well-being. When seniors’ subjective well-being is low, surprisingly, cognitive age increases seniors’ intention to use the device. These findings provide inter esting implications for practice and future research. Collapse

Abstract: We study how the cognitive complexity of chief executive officers (CEOs) changes during their tenures. Drawing from prior theory and research, we argue that CEOs attain gradually greater role-specific knowledge, or expertise, as their tenures advance, which yields more complex thinking. Beyond examining the main effect of CEO tenure on cognitive complexity, we consider three moderators of this relationship, each of which is expected to influence the accumulation of expertise over a CEO’s time in office: industry dynamism, industry jolts, and CEO positional power. We conduct our tests on a sample of 684 CEOs of public corporations. The analytic centerpiece of our study is a novel index of CEO cognitive complexity based on CEOs’ language patterns in the question-and-answer portions of quarterly conference calls. As part of our extensive theory of measurement, we provide evidence of the reliability and validity of our index. Our results indicate that CEOs, in general, experience substantial increases in cognitive complexity over their time in office. Examined moderators somewhat, but modestly, alter this general trajectory, and nonlinearities are not observed. We discuss the implications of our findings. Collapse

Abstract: Intelligent automation is increasingly taking over tasks that normally require substantial human experience and intuition. However, for individuals to delegate full control to applications like autonomous vehicles (AVs), they need to establish sufficient initial trust in the automation's functionality, reliability and transparency. Manufacturers and external institutions may build users' initial trust by providing structural assurance. Answering calls for a more context-specific, theoretically substantiated investigation of trust in AVs, we investigate how five different forms of structural assurance can be designed and how effective they are in trust-building: Technical, provider, legal, certifier and social protection. Extending previous, survey-based research, we conducted a choicebased conjoint experiment (n = 220). We find that external structural assurance in the form of legal and certifier protection may even outperform manufacturers' trust-building efforts. This is especially the case for some user groups, as a cluster analysis reveals individuals' heterogeneous preferences for structural assurance mechanisms. Collapse
