Abstract: The purpose of the proposed study is to investigate the effect of configurator properties, such as the type of visualization and interaction offered, on the value that consumers attach to co-created products and the satisfaction they derive from the design process. To do this, this study will compare 2D product configurators with 3D product configurators. 2D product configurators use a series of images for product visualization whereas 3D configurators use 3D models that provide consumers with the ability to rotate objects in three dimensions. Drawing from the theory of cognitive dissonance, the theory of effectance motivation and the behavioral decision-making literature, this paper suggests that configurator properties influence perceptions of control and effort expenditure which in turn elicit various processes that influence the perceived value of co-created products and consumers' satisfaction with the design process. Abstract: A growing body of research documents that audiences reward organizations perceived to be authentic with positive evaluations. In the current work, we adopt a mixed-methods approach—using data collected from Glassdoor.com and two experiments—to establish that perceptions of authenticity are elicited by perceived congruence between an organization’s stated values (i.e., the values it claims to hold) and its lived values (i.e., values members perceive as embodied by the organization), which in turn lead to more positive organizational evaluations. We then explore the conditions under which audiences are less likely to respond favorably to organizational authenticity, finding that the positive effects of stated-lived value congruence on evaluations are attenuated when audiences have a lower preference for stated values. Abstract: Social inclusion has become a pressing issue for organizations wishing to close the inequality and disparity gaps associated with underrepresented or disadvantaged groups. The challenge is becoming particularly critical in higher education institutions suffering from low retention rates and low graduation rates among first-generation college students (FGCS). In response to the challenges imposed by the notion of social inclusion, some universities and colleges are exploring the use of social networking technologies such as social media (SM) in ways that can impact social inclusion. In order to improve the understanding of how social networking technology affects the social inclusion of FGCS, we conducted a case study in a public, Hispanic-serving institution in the United States. We used technology affordance theory to reveal various affordances actualized by FGCS and various outcomes resulting from those affordances. To explain how the actualization of different strands of affordance produces certain outcomes, our analysis of 102 FGCS' narratives followed an established five-step framework for identifying generative mechanisms, revealing three SM user types-Community Builders, Scholars, and Information Seekers-and four actualized affordances, namely interconnection, inspiration, insightfulness, and intense comfort, which are conceptualized into three generative mechanisms: identity booster, academic growth, and self-care. Our results provide insights into SM usage for social inclusion outcomes. By revealing how technology use can promote social engagement and mitigate exclusion experienced by FGCS, this study contributes to the broad social inclusion research on technology and disadvantaged communities. Abstract: Digital technologies are widely used across the healthcare industry to provide a variety of services. Recently, chatbots, called digital mental health interventions (DMHIs), are increasingly used to provide mental health services to people in need. Given the shortage of mental health professionals needed to provide mental healthcare services, mental health chatbots are increasingly applied to augment these services. Studies indicate multiple response failures in these chatbots, which can lead to discontinuance of use by people in need. However, the nature of response failure and its effect on the discontinuance of mental health chatbots remain understudied. We plan to study this effect and utilize expectation disconfirmation theory and cognitive dissonance theory to guide the development of our propositions that investigate the impact of satisfaction, ease of use, and usefulness on the use discontinuance of mental health chatbots. Abstract: We examine investor behavior on social media platforms related to the GameStop (GME) short squeeze in early 2021. Individual investors stimulated the stock market via Reddit social posts in the presence of institutional investors who bet against GME’s success as short sellers. We analyzed r/WallStreetBets subreddit posts related to GME’s trading patterns. We performed text-based sentiment analysis and compared the social informedness of posting users for GME trading on two social media platforms. The short squeeze occurred due to coordinated trading by individual investors, who discussed trading strategies on the platforms and drove collective social informedness-based trading behavior. Our findings suggest that the valence and number of submissions influenced GME’s intraday transaction volumes and precursors for irrational trading behavior patterns to have emerged. We provide a theoretical interpretation of what occurred and call for tighter monitoring of social news platforms. We also encourage effort to create an in-depth understanding of the observed patterns and the linkages between them and the larger equity markets. Collapse

Abstract: Digital markets have proliferated in recent years, overcoming many market inefficiencies by facilitating direct interactions between consumers and creators. Thanks to this disintermediation, consumers now have access to a vast number of alternatives, while creators can efficiently reach huge markets. However, the success of digital markets has created a concomitant challenge for creators: differentiation. In crowded markets, agencies (e.g., publishing companies in books, freelance agencies in online labor markets, independent labels in music) can differentiate creators by signaling product quality. But how do agencies' reputations affect product success for creators? Can some agencies do more harm than good? To investigate these research questions, we theorize how variation in creator and agency reputation leads to asymmetric and heterogeneous effects, namely that (1) more reputable agencies have a stronger positive effect on less reputable creators than they have on more reputable creators, and (2) less reputable agencies hurt more reputable creators more than they hurt less reputable ones. Analyses of more than one million observations from two digital markets provide empirical support for these theory-driven arguments. The findings have design implications for markets and contribute to our understanding of how agencies, depending on creator reputation, can either benefit or hurt product success.Marios Kokkodis is a machine learning scientist working on personalization, recommender systems, and markets. Abstract: After the catastrophe that occurred in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, especially in the city of Nova Friburgo in January of 2011, caused by heavy rains, the population's perception of the risks associated with heavy rains was greatly affected. In the other hand, the civil defense agencies have great difficulties to predict the impacts of rainfall due to the limitations of the existing monitoring systems and due to the existing vulnerable communities. This paper describes how sharing sensemaking between the involved parties can transform the population's perceptions about rainfall impact to meteorological data for civil defense by filling gaps in the existing monitoring system and enable civil defense teams to inform and to guide the expectations of population for a more efficient response in emergency situations. Based on the Design Science Research methodology that seeks to develop and design solutions to solve a specific class of problem, a mobile phone application to share information between members of communities and the civil defense team was developed and tested. The test to verify the sensemaking transformation was done through a case study involving volunteers from the community and the civil defense team of Nova Friburgo during a real rainfall situation. The results showed that the continuous and iterative flow of information enables the sharing of sensemaking, indicating the importance of this process for decision-making during emergency response actions. Abstract: In the plethora of challenges associated with managing Information Systems (IS), deciding when to persist or withdraw from a distressed IS project is of utmost importance. Distressed IS projects are particularly prone to Escalation of Commitment (EoC) -the tendency to persist with failing courses of action. To better understand how the cognitive "black box" behind this tendency unfolds, we uncovered 13 cognitive reasoning patterns and a cognitive process model based on 270 text-based reflections of 56 participants during a sequential decision-making simulation. Cognition differs between the four escalation phases regarding the temporal focus (retrospective, introspective, prospective), the underlying mechanism (starting momentum, path dependency, denial, perceived completion proximity), and the combination of cognitive reasoning patterns. The cognitive process model of EoC helps detangle the complexities of managing IS. Our findings also support IS managers in identifying signs of escalation and selecting the appropriate actions to turn distressed projects around. Collapse

Abstract: Escalation of commitment -the tendency to persist with failing courses of action -can determine whether a distressed Information Systems (IS) project can be turned around. To disentangle the emotional and cognitive factors that give rise to escalation we conducted a between-subject randomized controlled laboratory experiment with 75 Master, MBA, and Ph.D. students, including data triangulation between neurophysiological and behavioral measures. This study successfully replicates the bias in the context of IS project distress, provides evidence for a psychophysiological link, supports the predictions on the role of negative and complex emotional states of self-justification theory over coping theory, and adds to a better understanding of how escalation tendency changes over time due to learning effects. Our findings contribute to enhancing decision-making in uncertain environments by using cognitive and emotional markers and thereby provide the foundation for developing neuro-adaptive de-escalation strategies.
