Abstract: To motivate visitors to engage with websites, e-tailers widely employ monetary rewards (e.g., vouchers, discounts) in their website designs. With advances in user interface technologies, many e-tailers have started to offer gamified monetary reward designs (MRDs), which require visitors to earn the monetary reward by playing a game, rather than simply claiming the reward. However, little is known about whether and why gamified MRDs engage visitors compared to their non-gamified counterpart. Even less is known about the effectiveness of gamified MRDs when providing certain or chance-based rewards, in that visitors do or do not know what reward they will gain for successfully performing in the game. Drawing on cognitive evaluation theory, we investigate gamified MRDs with certain or chance-based rewards and contrast them to non-gamified MRDs with certain rewards in user registration systems. Our results from a multi-method approach encompassing the complementary features of a randomised field experiment (N = 651) and a randomised online experiment (N = 330) demonstrate differential effects of the three investigated MRDs on user registration. Visitors encountering either type of gamified MRD are more likely to register than those encountering a non-gamified MRD. Moreover, gamified MRDs with chance-based rewards have the highest likelihood of user registrations. We also show that MRDs have distinct indirect effects on user registration via anticipated experiences of competence and sensation. Overall, the paper offers theoretical insights and practical guidance on how and why gamified MRDs are effective for e-tailers. Collapse

Abstract: We use the lens of the intrinsic/extrinsic motivation theory to holistically model the effects of intangible awards on member contribution in virtual communities. Using multiple studies on Yelp, we validate that the influence of award stimuli on contribution outcomes become significantly moderated by the aspect of contribution (quantity versus quality) and the novelty of stimuli (time and repetition of awards) to interestingly form divergent (downward versus upward) yet theoretically explicable curvilinear trajectories of contribution. This study contributes to IS literature on virtual communities and social-cognitive literature on work motivation and offers insights to community managers to design better incentive systems. Abstract: With today’s technological advancements, mobile phones and wearable devices have become extensions of an increasingly diffused and smart digital infrastructure. In this paper, we examine mobile health (mHealth) platforms and their health and economic impacts on the outcomes of chronic disease patients. To do so, we partnered with a major mHealth firm that provides one of the largest mobile health app platforms in Asia specializing in diabetes care. We designed and implemented a randomized field experiment based on detailed patient health activities (e.g., steps, exercises, sleep, food intake) and blood glucose values from 1,070 diabetes patients over several months. Our main findings show that the adoption of the mHealth app leads to an improvement in health behavior, which in turn leads to both short term metrics (such as reduction in patients’ blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin levels) and longer-term metrics (such as hospital visits and medical expenses). Patients who adopted the mHealth app undertook higher levels of exercise, consumed healthier food with lower calories, walked more steps and slept for longer times on a daily basis. They also were more likely to substitute offline visits with telehealth. A comparison of mobile versus PC-enabled versions of the same app demonstrates that the mobile version has a stronger effect than PC version in helping patients make these behavioral modifications with respect to diet, exercise, and lifestyle, which ultimately leads to an improvement in their healthcare outcomes. We also compared outcomes when the platform facilitates personalized health reminders to patients vis-à-vis generic (non-personalized) reminders. Surprisingly, we found that personalized mobile messages with patient-specific guidance can have an inadvertent (smaller) effect on patient app engagement and lifestyle changes, leading to a lower health improvement. However, they are more like to encourage a substitution of offline visits by telehealth. Overall, our findings indicate the massive potential of mHealth technologies and platform design in achieving better healthcare outcomes. Collapse

Abstract: Public awareness of the need to protect the environment has been on the rise given the widespread, continuous degradation of the global environment. Governments and businesses play important roles in fostering public acceptance of eco-friendly products and in increasing people’s use of resource recycling to achieve sustainable development. The present study, thus, explores how a website’s gamification mechanics influence the intrinsic motivations and needs satisfaction of users as well as their engagement in resource recycling. In addition, it investigates how environmental concerns moderate the relationships between intrinsic motivations and user engagement. The results reveal that gamification helps foster user engagement in resource recycling by influ encing needs satisfaction (i.e., relatedness, competence, and autonomy) between gamification mechanics and intrinsic motivations (i.e., self-presentation, self-efficacy, and flow). For users with high vs. low environmental concerns, intrinsic motivations have a more significant effect on their engagement in resource recycling. It is found that gamification not only creates intrinsic motivation, but it is also likely to facilitate the satisfaction of psychological needs through mechanisms such as self-expression, point rewards, and competition. This research adds to the literature by contributing a slightly different understanding of the success of gamification. Collapse

Abstract: Phishing is an increasing threat that causes billions in losses and damage to productivity, trade secrets, and reputations each year. This work explores how security gamification techniques can improve phishing reporting. We contextualized the cognitive evaluation theory (CET) as a kernel theory and constructed a prototype phishing reporting system. With three experiments in a simulated work setting, we tested gamification elements of validation, attribution, incentives, and public presentation for improvements in experiential (e.g., motivation) and instrumental outcomes (e.g., hits and false positives) in phishing reporting. Our findings suggest public attribution with rewards and punishments best balance the competing necessities of accuracy with widespread reporting. Furthermore, our results demonstrate the unique benefits of security gamification to phishing reporting over and above other phishing mitigation techniques (e.g., training and warnings). However, we also noted that unintended consequences in false alarms might arise from shifts in motivation resulting from public display of incentives. These findings suggest that carefully calibrated external incentives (rather than intrinsic rewards) are most likely to improve the ancillary task of phishing reporting. Collapse

Abstract: Product review platforms in online marketplaces differ with respect to the granularity of product quality information they provide. While some platforms provide a single overall rating for product quality (also referred to as the single-dimensional rating scheme), others provide a separate rating for each individual quality attribute (also referred to as the multidimensional rating scheme). The multidimensional rating scheme is superior to the single-dimensional rating scheme, ceteris paribus, in reducing consumers’ uncertainty about product quality and value. However, we show that, when sellers respond to product ratings by adjusting their prices, compared to the single-dimensional rating scheme, the multidimensional rating scheme does not always benefit consumers, nor does it necessarily benefit sellers or society. The uncertainty associated with quality attribute rating and the extent of differentiation between competing products determines whether a finer-grained multidimensional rating scheme is superior to a coarser-grained single-dimensional rating scheme from the consumer, seller, and social planner perspectives. The main driver of the results is that more (less) granular and less (more) uncertain information exposes (hides) underlying differentiation, or a lack thereof, between competing products, which, in turn, alters upstream price competition in the presence of heterogeneous consumer preferences. The results demonstrate that focusing on the information transfer aspect of rating schemes provides only a partial understanding of the true impacts of rating schemes. Collapse

Abstract: ICT-induced legal and regulatory challenges, including security and privacy risks, are on the rise. Despite that, there is a dearth of research emphasizing the role of ICT laws and understanding its effect on the level of ICT diffusion and the well-being of a country. Drawing on Dror’s law and social change framework, and grounding the discussion on the literature on ICT diffusion, the perspective of perceived risk, Hofstede’s typology of national culture, and the technological determinism theory, this study (1) explores the effect of maturity of ICT laws in a country on ICT diffusion among its citizens and businesses; (2) understands how this relationship is contingent on the national cultural dimensions; and (3) explicates the role of ICT diffusion in promoting the well-being. The research model is examined using publicly available data from 83 countries, and the findings suggest that sound ICT laws are necessary for achieving a greater diffusion of ICTs and improving well-being. Abstract: The sharing economy has become a source of innovation in recent years. However, some sharing business models succeed while others fail. A research model combining transaction costs and value-based models is developed and empirically evaluated using 476 responses. The results indicate that transaction costs and perceived benefits affect perceived value, which affects the intention to use the platform. The sharing object moderates the effect between transaction costs and perceived value. The effects of location and brand asset specificity on transaction costs vary across different sharing objects. Our findings explain why certain products are more likely to be successful on sharing platforms. Collapse

Abstract: Tuberculosis remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases in Vietnam. Its occurrence is exacerbated by erratic treatment, in particular by taking medication only sporadically or if patients discontinue the medication in an early stage. Previous approaches to support treatment adherence focus on monitoring (e.g., tele-observation) or external stimulation (e.g., rewards). These approaches, however, have not yet shown the desired effects. We assert that this is because current approaches focus on combatting the outcome, i.e., erratic treatment, instead of tackling the reasons for treatment noncompliance. Notably, the latter is heavily related to the stigmatization of TB patients and, especially, selfstigmatization. Using a design science research approach, this paper proposes a research plan for developing a gamified information system that aims at reducing patients self-stigmatization, by providing features that support TB patients community building as well as TB patients empowerment. Abstract: The use of a purported mobile rapid assessment (RA) app by first-line disaster responders is expected to improve disaster-related data collection process to be more effective and efficient. However, the use of the existing RA app in a disaster agency in South-East Asia country showed a steady sizeable decline as users gradually abandoned and/or utilized the app unfaithfully. Hence, an improvement in the app is necessary to achieve continuous engagement with and effective utilization by its users. We fill the gap by partnering with the agency and conducting an action design research by adopting a gamification approach to upgrade the app. We adopt gamification design principles into disaster response context and leverage psychological theories to justify our gamification design choices. While our ADR study is in progress, the new gamification design and principles in our unique context may later contribute to the IS literature of disaster response and gamification. Collapse
