Abstract: With the advent of virtual reality (VR), immersive learning environments are considered as viable elearning environments. Yet, there is still no clarity on the long-term success with VR when learning. We examine the short-term and long-term learning outcomes between an illustrated text, 2D video, and VR. This is achieved through an experiment in which the effects of the three technologies on learning outcomes were measured immediately and 14 days after the learning phase. In the short-term, VR had a larger effect on subjectively and objectively measured knowledge gain as well as on motivation than the two other learning environments. In the long-term, VR did outperform the 2D video material on the desktop only when measured objectively. Our results imply that VR can transfer knowledge to the long-term better than other learning environments but more effort needs to be made to make the learning success more obvious on a subjective level.We draw our arguments for the effect of VR on learning outcome mainly from Multimedia Learning Theory (Mayer and Moreno, 1998). Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted children’s learning routines from schools to their own homes, necessitating learning support solutions. This paper reports on a design science research project that combines augmented reality with a conversational agent to assist schoolchildren in learning complex subjects by providing verbal descriptions and interactive animations. Drawing on the theoretical foundations of multimedia learning, we derive three design principles to resolve seven issues associated with distance learning. The instantiated artifact augments text-based learning resources and facilitates learning in a contextsensitive manner through multimodal output. The proof-of-concept evaluation with 11 experienced teachers and researchers in the field of didactics confirms the usefulness of these design principles and suggests refinements of the artifact. Abstract: Process models are widely used for various system analysis and design activities, but it is challenging for stakeholders to understand these complex artifacts. In this work, we focus on the use of dynamic visualization techniques, in particular animation, to help reduce users’ cognitive load when making sense of process models. We built on the principles of the cognitive theory of multimedia learning, cognitive load theory, and cognitive dimensions framework to develop an adaptive animation solution. Our experiments suggested that process model comprehension improves when users of process models are provided with animation features; the effect is moderated by process modeling expertise according to a U-shape. Our study contributes to the field of conceptual modeling by making a strong case for the use of animation to support complex problem-solving tasks. Moreover, our animation solution offers ample opportunities for being integrated into industrial modeling tools. Collapse

Abstract: In explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), researchers try to alleviate the intransparency of highperforming but incomprehensible machine learning models. This should improve their adoption in practice. While many XAI techniques have been developed, the impact of their possibilities on the user is rarely being investigated. Hence, it is neither apparent whether an XAI-based model is perceived as more explainable than existing alternative machine learning models nor is it known whether the explanations actually increase the user's comprehension of the problem, and thus, their problem-solving ability. In an empirical study, we asked 165 participants about the perceived explainability of different machine learning models and an XAI augmentation. We further tasked them to answer retention, transfer, and recall questions in three scenarios with different stake. The results reveal high comprehensibility and problem-solving performance of XAI augmentation compared to the tested machine learning models. Collapse

Abstract: Models play an important role in systems analysis and design (SAD). A diagrammatic model is defined as a mapping from a domain to a visual representation in such a way that relevant information is preserved to meet a specific goal. So far, cognitive research on diagram criteria in relation to task performance has been fragmented. The aim of this paper is to (1) consolidate research on the cognitive processing steps involved during understanding and task performance with diagrams, (2) consolidate corresponding criteria for such diagrams to best support cognitive processing, and (3) demonstrate the support effective diagrams provide for performing SAD tasks. Addressing the first aim, we develop a theoretical cognitive framework of task performance with diagrams called CogniDia. It integrates different cognitive theories from research on diagrams in software engineering and information systems. Regarding the second aim, we review the literature to organize criteria for effective cognitive processing of diagrams. We identify research gaps on verbal and task processing. Regarding the third aim, we use the theoretical cognitive framework to investigate how diagrams support the SAD process effectively. Collapse

Abstract: Service platforms make software applications available as a service to end users. Platforms enable noticeable economic benefits for scaling and transforming a business. Their long-term competitiveness is ensured in controlled cooperation with channel intermediaries and network partners. Hence, service platforms must be designed to harness self-enforcing effects of value generation, so-called network effects. In an exaptation of existing knowledge, we present an information systems design theory to inform the design of methods that analyze, describe, and guide the design of service platforms through the means of causal loops and control methods. We describe the theory’s purpose and scope as well as the underlying justificatory knowledge behind the constructs and principles of form and function. The design theory covers the design of all service platform participants and activities as well as their transactions and influences in areas of staged platform authority, using enforcing and incentivizing control methods. We demonstrate the principles of implementation with an expository instantiation and apply it to the M-Engineering service platform, which offers surveillance, control, and data acquisition solutions. Furthermore, we present and discuss testable propositions and a study design to evaluate our design principles. Collapse

Abstract: The relevance of information systems (IS) research to practice is considered an old problem in the field. Practitioners often question the relevance of (IS) research to practice. This study explores the impact and benefits of video narratives on disseminating design science research, which helps increase the relevance to practitioners. Drawing on the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and Critical Narrative Theory, we propose that research briefs in the form of video narratives should help improve the accessibility and applicability aspects of relevance in design science research (DSR) articles. To illustrate this point, we have created a video narrative for a recent design science article that is based on the proposed theoretical foundations in this study. Abstract: Since the start of human civilisation, storytelling has served as an effective medium for disseminating important knowledge within families, communities, and organisations. We make a case for the use of visual storytelling, namely, video stories, to supplement traditional scholarly articles in the Information Systems (IS) discipline, thereby exploring its potential to improve actual and perceived comprehension, perceived utility, satisfaction as well as intentions to cite, share, and accept research. Drawing on cognitive learning theory, the cognitive theory of multimedia learning and the literature on deep processing, we develop our research model, which is based on the model by Jiang and Benbasat (2007). We test our model in experimental settings with 269 research-oriented students and academics who were randomised into four conditions: (1) reading a text-based article, (2) reading the script for a video about the article, (3) viewing the video story of the article, and (4) viewing the video story followed by reading the article. Results showed that the article's script was significantly perceived to be the least useful in disseminating research content. The video story and text-based article were perceived to be equally useful, and supplementing the text-based article with a video story was perceived to be the most useful. Moreover, the video story and text-based article supplemented by a video story were of roughly equal effectiveness; yet, the video script was the most effective, and the text-based article was least effective relative to other formats in disseminating scholarly knowledge. Last, we discuss how to further improve the design of video stories by referring to the critical narrative theory, which has the potential to significantly promote the dissemination of IS scholarly knowledge. Abstract: Augmented Reality (AR) is an immersive techn ology that is increasingly becoming popular in e-commerce. This technology is transformin g the traditional w ay of product presentations in online stores. How ever, online ret ailers are keen to know if an ARbased product presentation is impacting consumers differently from traditional product presentations. In this study, we investigate the in fluence of immersive user interfaces on consumers’ perceptions. We conduct an experiment in a university setting with subjec ts who test a mobile app enabled with AR, interactive three-dimension al (3D) and traditional representation for products of different complexities. We find that an immersive interface reduces the perceived risk and enhances satisfaction of the consumer, but increases the cognitive load. The first two effects are found to be higher for a more complex product. This study provides guidance to retailers w ho are planning to adopt immersive technologies for online product presentations about their possible impact on target consumers. Collapse

Abstract: Augmented Reality (AR) based teaching and learning has evolved rapidly over the past years. Researchers have shown that AR has the potential to deliver persuasive learning experiences in formal teaching (e.g., in classrooms) and in informal learning environments (e.g., museums). However, comparatively little extant research is firmly grounded in learning theories and applies rigorous empirical methods to evaluate the effect of AR on learning performance. In order to build a cumulative body of knowledge on AR-based instructional design and its effectiveness, it is necessary to consolidate both the theoretical foundations of and empirical evidence for using AR for teaching and learning. Against this background we conducted a focused systematic literature review on theoretical and empirical foundations of AR in education. We identify theory-based design elements and empirical measures for developing and applying AR teaching and learning applications and consolidate them in a design framework. Collapse
