Abstract: We study the association between people' participation in an ESN platform and job mobility events using employees' actions on an S&P500 company's enterprise social networking (ESN) platform. Using cutting-edge text-mining algorithms, we first determine the settings in which employees use these platforms and then assess the relationship between those qualities and job mobility. According to our topic-modeling analysis, employee participation on workplace social networking platforms has multiple dimensions; nonetheless, it is mainly employed for knowledge-sharing, social networking, employee engagement, and volunteer activities. We provide empirical evidence that employees' contributions to knowledge-sharing, social networking, and organizational engagement via ESN lead to a higher likelihood of job mobility; however, a higher number of complaints, perhaps surprisingly, is associated with a higher likelihood of job mobility. We contend that better levels of knowledge-sharing, social networking, and employee engagement with less complaints can be linked to self-promotion, resulting in a higher likelihood of promotion. Abstract: We analyze how advice from an AI affects complementarities between humans and AI, in particular what humans know that an AI does not know: "unique human knowledge." In a multi-method study consisting of an analytical model, experimental studies, and a simulation study, our main finding is that human choices converge toward similar responses improving individual accuracy. However, as overall individual accuracy of the group of humans improves, the individual unique human knowledge decreases. Based on this finding, we claim that humans interacting with AI behave like "Borgs," that is, cyborg creatures with strong individual performance but no human individuality. We argue that the loss of unique human knowledge may lead to several undesirable outcomes in a host of human-AI decision environments. We demonstrate this harmful impact on the "wisdom of crowds." Simulation results based on our experimental data suggest that groups of humans interacting with AI are far less effective as compared to human groups without AI assistance. We suggest mitigation techniques to create environments that can provide the best of both worlds (e.g., by personalizing AI advice). We show that such interventions perform well individually as well as in wisdom of crowds settings. Collapse

Abstract: Knowledge collaboration in online communities often involves a significant proportion of less active participants who make only scant contributions to their communities. This has become a pervasive characteristic of collaborative work organized through this new form. However, there is ambiguity regarding the role of less active participants in knowledge collaboration in online communities. In this study, we probe the indirect influence of less active participants' contributing behaviors on the quality of knowledge collaboration. We propose the following two-step causal path: 1) less active participants' participation causes active participants to increase contributions and 2) the additional contributions of active participants that result from less active participants' participation substantively improves the quality of knowledge collaboration. Using the edit data of featured articles in the Chinese Wikipedia, we examine the proposed causal path. The main findings of this study are as follows: the productivity of active participants of a Wikipedia article increases when they are triggered by less active participants' editing activities; the additional edits of active participants triggered by less active participants can improve the quality of an article; and less active participants play a major role in reviving the editing work of dormant articles. These findings reveal that less active participants play a substantial role in knowledge collaboration in online communities, as their contributing behaviors sustain collaborative work and eventually improve the quality of outputs. Abstract: The extent of co-authorship in IS research is on the rise. Why has collaboration between IS academics increased? While prior research on the incidence of co-authorship provides several reasons for why academics collaborate, little is known about whether these rationales are equally adept at explaining the growing extent of co-authorship. To answer this question, we delve into extant research on collaboration and delineate four rationales for why papers have more co-authors. These include information processing, access to social resources, convenience, and the opportunity cost of time. We formulate several variables and propose several hypotheses based on these rationales. We collected data by coding 641 papers from six major U.S. and European journals. The results generally support the proposed hypotheses. We discuss the implications of the results in terms of how they inform the field and policy makers. Collapse

Abstract: Drawing on theories on dispersed teamwork, computer-mediated communications, and organizations, we examine the direct associations between temporal distance and team performance as well as the mediating role of team interaction. We tested our research model in a laboratory experiment with four temporal distance conditions. Results show that the direct associations between temporal distance and team performance are substantially diminished when we enter the intervening team communication variables (communication frequency and turn-taking) into the analysis model. We find that communication frequency and turn-taking have differentiated effects on conveyance of information and convergence on its meaning. Conveyance is positively associated with production speed, whereas convergence is positively associated with higher product quality (i.e., accuracy). These findings speak to the theoretical significance of communication patterns and information exchange behaviors in dispersed team research. They also transcend the common wisdom that temporal distance is good for speed and bad for quality. Collapse

Abstract: Using collaborative technologies to improve collaborative work is a long-term concern because of over-expected barriers in the implementation. The “quality of information sharing” is a group-level construct for assessing the outcome of collaborative technology use in collaborative work. However, few studies have addressed this informational influence. We propose a research model, grounded in interactivity and fit-appropriation theories, to examine structural, perceptual, and attitudinal influences on the quality of information sharing. Particularly, we incorporate task complexity into this model to examine the direct and interaction effects on collaborative technology use. We empirically test the model by examining the use of Lotus Notes at offices. The empirical results show that structural and perceptual factors have distinct effects on fit and appropriation attitudes, which indirectly or directly determine the quality of information sharing. We also discuss the academic and managerial implications of the research findings. Collapse

Abstract: Culture shapes interpersonal communication. However, little is known about how culture interacts with computer-mediated communication (CMC) tools in a business context. We present a large-scale empirical study of cultural differences in computer mediated social interactions in a global company. Our dataset includes 9,000 volunteer users and more than 20 million records of their email and Instant Messaging conversations. We compared social network characteristics, preferences for CMC tools, and expression of sentiment across employees working in seven countries. Significant differences emerged and the patterns are consistent with the inherent cultural characteristics as suggested by cultural theories. In addition, we uncover the complex manner in which culture interacts with preference and use of different communication mediums. The existence of pervasive and complex cultural differences, points to the need to understand and account for such differences in designing cross-cultural collaborative systems. Collapse

Abstract: In order to build a digital inclusive society, both government and nongovernment organizations in countries such as China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States have been offering training programs to the general public and establishing communitywide public access computer facilities in recent years. However, offering training programs and enabling access to facilities are not sufficient on their own if, due to other reasons, the socially disadvantaged groups do not choose to make use of the facilities. As an exploratory investigation, this study focuses on the voluntary adoption of these facilities (typified by the Internet) by one such disadvantaged group—older adults. In particular, this study investigates the role of Internet self-efficacy and outcome expectations in older adults' usage of the Internet through a three-part longitudinal study, involving almost 1,000 participants. A theoretical model based on social cognitive theory was developed and empirically tested through both surveys and lab experiments. Behavioral modeling training courses were offered to adults age 55 or older in the study over a one-year period. Questionnaire surveys and cognitive knowledge assessments were conducted. In general, the findings in the longitudinal study (including three repeated measures) validated the affects of Internet self-efficacy and outcome expectations on usage intention, and the important roles of support and encouragement in the formation of self-efficacy and outcome expectations. Abstract: We organized a web-based coursework (feasibility study) and seminar during our information management and information systems development course for some students (experimental group). The students worked on the given development problems of information systems in small groups. For the web-based seminar each group had their own workspace in the Web CT environment for publishing and presenting coursework. At the final phase of the coursework the students familiarized themselves with the presentations of other groups. Abstract: As globalization increases and competition grows, firms are becoming increasingly dependent upon group work and collaboration. The recent surge of reengineering efforts to reinforce a process view of organizational work and the emergence of virtual corporations spanning the globe indicate that firms are relying more on group work today than ever before. Information technology (IT) may have the capability to greatly enhance the quality of collaboration in accomplishing group tasks. This paper focuses on electronic meeting systems (EMS), which are mostly aimed at supporting group work in a face-to-face setting, and empirically assesses their adoption and use in supporting task-oriented collaborative work in Australian and New Zealand organizations. Results from survey data collected from 147 organizations indicate that EMS adoption has been somewhat limited. Most organizations had not adopted EMS to support group work. Further, both the level of adoption and level of use of EMS within the organizations was very low. Barriers to adoption were identified along with implications for future research. Organizational barriers, including compatibility with cognitive styles, lack of incentives and resistance to change, were the most important adoption obstacles. Technological and costs issues were somewhat less significant. Overall, the findings are fairly similar to the US study on which the survey instrument was based, though some adoption differences occurred which may be related to the structure and ownership of the organizations.
