Abstract: Gamification provides a prominent technique that can be used to provide Immersive Learning Environments (ILEs) for domains, where it is dangerous or expensive to learn in real environments. Especially industrial organizations (e.g., manufacturing, mining, construction) are a promising domain for implementing ILEs that combine gamification concepts with a pedagogical design to facilitate safety training under secure circumstances. Although there are design research studies that exemplify the utility of gamification of learning activities, or how to improve organizational safety training through gamification, there is a need to address how sustainable safe spaces can be designed for enhanced safety training in ILEs. Safe spaces are key elements of a successful safety training experience in ILEs as they provide safe and secure training environments, which in the physical world are typically considered too dangerous with high risk of injuring the training participants. This study reports findings from an ongoing DSR project that stresses the design of ILEs for sustainable safety training. Within the project, an artifact for immersive fire safety training in virtual reality has been designed, developed, and evaluated together with employees of a train operator company. The research responds to the need of producing design knowledge that moves beyond the highly contextualized designs principles that are particular for IVR applications. We use gamification concepts as a kernel theory for developing a mid-range theory of designing immersive virtual safety training environments. Collapse

Abstract: Healthcare systems across the globe are riding a wave of clinical health IT investment, centered on electronic health records (EHR) systems. Supported by governmental incentives, this build-out has positioned the healthcare system for a period of transformation as EHR functionality has become ingrained in the work routines of healthcare providers and other system participants. We report on a field study of healthcare participants in the United States to explore the influence of EHR use on the boundaries and practices of the field. Our grounded theory analysis reveals the interplay between the field practices of individual communities and the boundary spanning practices that unite them. Through the adoption of a practice perspective, we highlight the changes to both boundary spanning and field practices engendered by enterprise EHR use and propose the complementary mechanisms of reticulation and boundary molding by which those changes emerge. We conclude with a consideration of the positive and potentially negative consequences of EHR use for delivery of healthcare services. Collapse

Abstract: Unlike other assets, data’s value increases when it is shared and reused. Whereas organizations have traditionally exchanged data vertically with other actors along the value chain, we observe that they increasingly share complementary data assets with others, even at times with their competitors, to address business and societal challenges. Research on these new forms of horizontal data sharing and the emerging data ecosystems is still scarce. Building on the theory of communities of practice, we study a pioneer data sharing community comprising more than 20 multinational companies that developed an innovative approach to pool data management efforts. We derive eight design principles for horizontal data sharing, which we cluster according to the following dimensions: domain of interest, shared practice, and community. By offering prescriptive design knowledge, our findings make an important contribution to the emerging literature on cross-company data sharing. Our research also provides practitioners with actionable insights on how to establish and operate data sharing communities effectively. Collapse

Abstract: Research on the antecedents of SM and its consequences for organizations is silent on the distinctions between Enterprise SM (ESM) and Public SM (PSM) applications, as also is unclear whether PSM usage lowers or improves organizational outcomes. Our research model addresses these gaps. One, since SM usage is serendipitous and unstructured we propose that an organization’s strategic orientation is highly salient in affecting social media use. Two, we theorize why each type of SM – ESM vis-à-vis PSM contributes distinctly to organizational social capital. Data was collected from the IT industry, an ideal setting given its high clock-speed and information intensity. We find that PSM use contributes to all dimensions of social capital, over and above the contribution from ESM use. Further, as hypothesized, external orientation positively affects PSM use. The findings contribute to deepening theory to explain the link between SM use and organizational social capital, as well as introduce external orientation as novel antecedent of SM use. Collapse

Abstract: In our increasingly knowledge-based society the need for innovative concepts within the discipline of Knowledge Management (KM) becomes clear. Therefore, this article aims to shed light on current and uprising innovative technologies and concepts within the discipline of KM. This study conveys recent and previous scientific literature on the relevance of uprising innovative concepts within the various dimensions of KM. We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) on various literature sources to cover the whole spectrum of innovative KM approaches. All 37 reviewed articles originate from acknowledged sources and were written in English. The findings show, which innovative concepts show relevance within KM, how they are classified into the three innovation categories social, technological, and organizational, how they manifest within KM and what to expect from future KM innovations. Abstract: As a result of the rapid evolution of computer culture, social media and networking websites now provide the primary socialisation platforms for individuals across the world. With characteristics such as transcending time, space, and even cultures, these platforms impact individuals through increased interactions. Although past research shows how social media impacts on individuals’ cultural affiliations and identity construction processes, research neglects to understand the role and impact of the characteristics of social media and networking en­ vironments as individuals engage in these virtual spaces. This paper uses Instagram as a case study, to demonstrate the liminal nature of social media spaces and looks at how this virtual space and its characteristics evoke a sense of reflexivity with regards to identity construction amongst young British Sikhs in the U.K. We highlight how the empowering characteristics of this virtual space impact their identity and just how the communities that are formed by individuals through Instagram, act as a further acculturative agent, as they attempt to deal with the tensions that they experience as a result of being both British and Sikh. Findings implicate how brands can engage with and support the individuals going through this reflective identity re/ construction process. Collapse

Abstract: As we move along the ever-transforming world of digital technology and organizations, the perspective of how we view digital transformation (DT) also transforms. The episodic and continuous nature of changes requires an in-depth, nuanced temporal perspective. Through a case study on an incumbent maritime organization chasing new digital value propositions, we explore the flows of actions within DT. We discuss 1) DT as flows of action, 2) the challenges of planning and measuring DT, and 3) how resistance can spur action. Moving further, we argue that this view will enable future research on how to perform DT in a way that considers the convergence of flows of action. Collapse

Abstract: Online hacker communities are meeting spots for aspiring and seasoned cybercriminals where they engage in technical discussions, share exploits and relevant hacking tools to be used in launching cyber-attacks on business organizations. Sometimes, the affected organizations can detect these attacks in advance, with the help of cyberthreat intelligence derived from the explicit and implicit features of hacker communication in these forums. Herein, we proposed a novel text-mining based cyber-risk assessment and mitigation framework, which performs the following critical tasks. (i) Cyber-risk Assessment - to identify hacker expertise (i.e., newbie, beginner, inter­ mediate, and advanced) using explicit and implicit features applying various classification algorithms. Among these features, cybersecurity keywords, sharing of attachments, and sentiments emerged as significant. Further, we found that expert hackers demonstrate leadership in the online forums that eventually serve as communities of practice. Consequently, novice hackers gradually develop their cyber-attack skills through prolonged observa­ tions, interactions, and external influences in this social learning process. (ii) Cyber-risk mitigation – computes financial impact for every {hacker expertise, attack-type} combination, and then by ranking them on a {likelihood, impact} decision-matrix to prioritize mitigation strategies in affected organizations. Through these novel rec­ ommendations, our framework can guide managers to decide on appropriate cybersecurity controls using an {expected loss, probability, attack-type, hacker expertise} metric against financial losses due to cyber-attacks.
