Abstract: Technological advancements in the area of artificial intelligence have rapidly improved the performance of speech recognition and natural language processing. These improvements have facilitated the proliferation of voice assistants (VAs), which can understand human speech and provide spoken answers to assist in various tasks. More and more individuals and organizations adopt VAs because they value the naturalness of speech interaction. However, speech interaction is of ephemeral nature and processed in sequential order, which puts cognitive load on the user. Therefore, we investigate the relationship between the complexity of speech interaction and the interaction outcomes enjoyment, satisfaction, and intention to explore. Our results show that this relationship has an inverted U-shape for people with above-median information processing speed (i.e., younger adults) but is negatively linear otherwise. The results contribute to the literature on interface complexity and on the use of IT systems by the elder. Collapse

Abstract: Prior research on global virtual teams (GVTs) identifies ‘cultural discontinuity’ as a salient boundary that needs to be bridged for better performance. Grounding the study in organizational discontinuity theory (ODT), we propose cultural intelligence (CQ) as one of the modalities through which cultural discontinuities in GVTs could possibly be bridged. Situating the discussion, in transactional model of stress and coping (TMSC), we develop a CQ nomological network describing the inter-relationships and mechanisms through which different CQ dimensions influence GVT performance. Further, leveraging compensatory adaptation theory (CAT) we hypothesize the significant role of structural adaptation (role structure adaptation), in addition to behavioral adaptation (CQ behavior), in the proposed CQ framework for the GVT context. The theorized model is tested via data collected through a two-wave survey design comprising 128 GVT members in 32 teams. Study provides support to the extended CQ nomological network and makes several valuable theoretical and practical contributions. Collapse

Abstract: This study develops a research model explaining knowledge sharing among open source software (OSS) developers based on the theories of transactive memory system (TMS) and compensatory adaptation. Specifically, this study proposes that the TMS should be positively associated with knowledge sharing and the quality of communication among OSS developers. The quality of communication is positively associated with knowledge sharing. Furthermore, this study suggests that communication quality partially mediate the positive relationship between TMS and knowledge sharing. By collecting data from 120 OSS project teams, this study empirically confirms all the hypotheses. Collapse

Abstract: Compensatory adaptation theory makes two key predictions. On one hand, the theory predicts that electronic communication media in general will pose obstacles to complex communication between collaborators, when compared with the face-to-face medium, which will lead to an increase in cognitive effort and communication ambiguity. On the other hand, the theory also predicts that those obstacles will be met with compensatory adaptation, whereby electronic communication users will attempt to make up for the obstacles by modifying their communication behavior. This will in turn lead to a reduction in communication fluency. This study extends compensatory adaptation theory by also predicting that the burden of compensating for electronic communication media obstacles will fall primarily on those who attempt to convey information, as opposed to those who receive it. Those predictions are tested through an experiment involving 230 students, whose data are analyzed through nonparametric tests. All predictions are supported by the data analysis results. The use of a Web-based quasi-synchronous electronic communication medium, when compared with the face-to-face medium, increased perceived cognitive effort by approximately 12% and perceived communication ambiguity by about 19%. Communication fluency was reduced by about 90%. Perceived compensatory encoding effort (i.e., the effort spent by information givers) was increased by approximately 26%, and perceived compensatory decoding effort (i.e., the information receivers' effort) by a statistically insignificant percentage. Abstract: Prior research on the use of electronic communication media by teams performing complex tasks has led to contradictory findings. Much research has suggested that electronic communication media, due to not incorporating important elements found in face-to-face communication, pose obstacles for communication in comparison with the face-to-face medium. On the other hand, research has also suggested that teams interacting primarily electronically could perform quite well, sometimes even better, than face-to-face teams. A new theoretical framework, which builds on the notion of compensatory adaptation, has recently been advanced to explain these contradictory findings, arguing that (a) electronic communication media do pose obstacles to communication, and (b) individuals working in teams often compensate for obstacles posed by electronic communication media, which sometimes leads to team outcomes that are just as good or even better than those achieved by similar groups interacting primarily face-to-face. This study tests compensatory adaptation theory through a survey of 462 new product development teams, and finds general support for the theory. Important implications for research and practice are also discussed. Collapse
