Abstract: Multi-channel human-computer interaction offers a new perspective for optimization research in the digital museum, though there is no empirical evidence on how these factors affect cognition. This paper conducted a controlled experiment using the audio guide as a breakthrough point, aiming to determine the cognitive changes before and after the audio-visual dual-channel interaction. The results demonstrate that adding the auditory channel brought more cognitive load but not better cognitive outcomes. This paper evaluated the reasons behind it and noted that designing channels based solely on technical feasibility is undesirable, with suggestions pro­ posed for museum practitioners and platform developers. Abstract: Building the Internet of Behaviors (IOB) obviously requires capturing human behavior. Sensor input from eye tracking has been widely used for profiling in market research, adaptive user interfaces, and other smart systems, but requires dedicated hardware. The wide spread of webcams in consumer devices like phones, tablets, notebooks, and smart TVs has fostered eye tracking with commodity cameras. In this paper, we present a systematic review across the IEEE and ACM databases -- complemented by snowballing and input from eye tracking experts at CHI 2021 -- to list and characterize publicly available webcam eye trackers that estimate the point-of-regard on devices with no additional hardware. Information from articles was supplemented by searching author websites and code repositories, and contacting authors. 16 eye trackers were found that can be used. The restrictions regarding license terms and technical performance are presented, enabling developers to choose an appropriate software for their IoB application. Collapse

Abstract: Digital transformation is driving demand for information technology (IT) professionals. Addressing the underrepresentation of women in IT is a promising way to expand the pool of potential candidates. This research aims to determine how women without IT-specific knowledge can potentially contribute to reducing the gender gap in the German IT sector, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. A case study with qualitative interviews within a medium-sized IT service company was conducted to answer the research question. The results reveal that targeted job advertisements can successfully introduce women from other sectors to the possibility of a career change in the IT environment. In this way, new female employees can be recruited, reducing the gender gap. Collapse

Abstract: Reducing the level of carbon intensity -i.e., the level of carbon emission -is an important issue in cooperate IT management. Drawing upon the belief-action-outcome (BAO) framework, this study examines the impact of two different IT resources -i.e., onpremises IT (OPIT) and on-demand IT (ODIT) -on a firm's carbon intensity. Also, we examine the moderating impact of green management strategies -i.e., environmental board oversight and environmental management incentives -on the effect of OPIT and ODIT on a firm's carbon intensity. Using panel data with a sample of 3074 observations collected from 864 firms from 2016 to 2019, we find that OPIT usage is positively associated with carbon intensity, whereas ODIT usage is negatively associated with carbon intensity. In addition, we find that, while environmental board oversight mitigates the positive direct impact of OPIT on carbon intensity, environmental management incentives reinforce the negative direct impact of ODIT on carbon intensity. Abstract: Algorithmic control (AC) uses digital technologies and advanced algorithms to control workers and is rapidly becoming a central component of modern work environments.While previous research has explored the implications of AC by examining its specific forms, mechanisms, or functions, this research argues for a broader understanding of AC as socio-technical systems, explicitly considering the technological and organizational characteristics of AC. The overarching goal of this study is to identify and conceptualize the core dimensions and respective characteristics of AC systems. To achieve this goal, we develop a taxonomy based on a review of prior literature and an analysis of 21 empirical examples. Furthermore, we demonstrate the application and usefulness of the derived taxonomy by applying it to three real-world AC systems. By adopting a holistic system perspective and developing a validated taxonomy, our study contributes to the theoretical understanding of AC systems and sets the stage for deeper exploration in future research. Abstract: In this paper, we provide a detailed insight into the complex coevolution dynamics that shape the alignment process by analyzing how different mechanisms and factors are mutually related in complex networks of feedback loops. We combine insights from the literature on alignment as a (coevolution) process with literature on alignment as a state to identify the different components of the organization’s socio-technical system that influence alignment, the relationships between these components, and the role that different factors play. In our empirical analysis (based multiple case studies) we then focus on the actual interplay between relevant factors. Using a causal loop diagramming approach - based on system dynamics – we analyze how these factors mutually influence each other through various feedback loops and thus shape the alignment process. We extend previous literature on the alignment process by identifying the way that the complex interplay between different factors shapes this process. By identifying the feedback loops between relevant factors, we also provide more insight into the complex bottom-up and top-down dynamics that shape the process, and that provide explanations for why this process is charac­ terized by transitions between alignment and misalignment. For practice, our paper provides a deeper understanding of the alignment process, which is a precondition for improving alignment practices in organisations. Collapse

Abstract: Multi-sided platforms must make decisions on both pricing and engineering investment and must continually adjust them as the platform scales over its lifecycle. Engineering investments can be allocated to features that improve a platform's standalone value, social features to take advantage of same-side network effects, or integration tools and boundary resources to facilitate third-party content creation. Guidance in the academic or practitioner literature is not granular. Moreover, relevant normative economic models that consider externalities are rarely dynamic. Hence, there is a gap in knowledge about how to best balance tradeoffs between different strategic decisions throughout the entire platform lifecycle. To begin to address this gap, we explore normative strategies for coordinating pricing and engineering investment decisions on a continuous basis under different ecosystem conditions. We build a simulation model informed by economics and marketing theory and perform extensive sensitivity analyses on key parameters in different ecosystem scenarios over a multi-period lifecycle. We find that pricing and investment strategies must continuously change to perform optimally. In particular, strategies that are most effective at launch often differ from those that are most effective during scaling as well as those most effective at maturity. We also find that the optimal strategy depends strongly on the monetization model and market aversion to price changes. Lastly, we specifically examine four different industry segments: mobile platforms, social media, the sharing economy, and business-to-business. The results provide evidence that the trajectory of platform pricing and investment strategies should greatly differ depending on industrial context. Collapse

Abstract: As of late, the use of “digital” as a qualifier to established research concepts is increasing. However, we have yet to clearly establish what makes a “digital x” concept distinct from an “IT x” concept when “x” stands for well-established concepts such as strategy, infrastructure, innovation, or transformation, among others. In this paper, we review the need for, and merit of, labeling focal concepts in our field as “digital x” in contrast to using the dominant, incumbent label of “IT x.” We position the shift as a call to attend to new salient features that characterize contemporary settings of information technology use and its effects. Recognizing this need, we develop guidelines for future research by arguing what novel phenomena the label of “digital x” foregrounds and how insights gained through such foregrounding contribute to scholarship in ways that the term “IT x” does not. By doing so, this paper promotes clarity for the use of the digital x concepts and introduces explicit guidelines to delineate between the nascent stream of digital x research and established modes of IT x research. Abstract: As the information technology (IT) services landscape matures, clients are increasingly adopting multisourcing arrangements that involve multiple vendors. Although a large body of information systems (IS) literature addresses issues of whether to outsource (to a single vendor), what types of contracts to use, and how to achieve optimal relational governance, little is known about the antecedents and consequents of the single versus multisourcing decision. Moreover, while conceptual and analytical models of single-sourcing versus multisourcing have been developed, there is no empirical IS research using a large-scale data set with rigorous econometric analysis that examines the antecedents and consequents of multisourcing in the IT context. This paper fills this void, using the transaction cost economic lens and a data set of 49,057 large IT outsourcing arrangements that spans multiple industries and dates back 25 years. We find that there is a curvilinear relationship between number of IT services in an IT outsourcing arrangement and the likelihood of multisourcing. This relationship increases as the number of IT services increases to up to five services and then decreases. For managers who plan to multisource IT outsourcing arrangements, this research provides guidance to minimize exchange hazards through a better understanding of the relationship between sourcing choice, client IT outsourcing capabilities, the competitiveness of the vendor landscape, and the number of IT services in an IT outsourcing arrangement. We provide empirical evidence that the choice between single-sourcing and multisourcing is material to the performance of outsourcing contracts as an incorrect sourcing choice is likely to result in negative contract outcomes. Abstract: Workarounds are goal-driven deviations from the standard operating procedures performed to overcome obstacles constraining day-to-day work. Despite starting as temporary fixes, they can become established across an organisation and trigger the innovation of processes and IT artefacts that can resolve misfits permanently. Although prior research has elicited antecedents and types of workarounds, it is not known how workarounds diffuse in an organisation and, thereby, innovating co-workers' activities, IT artefacts, and organisational structures. The results of our multiple two-year case study provide unique empirical insights into the diffusion of workarounds and how they can act as generative mechanisms for bottom-up process innovation.
