Abstract: Privacy needs on today’s internet differ from the information privacy needs in traditional e-commerce settings due to their focus on interactions among online peers rather than merely transactions with an online vendor. Peer-oriented online interactions have critical implications for an individual’s virtual presence and self-cognition. Yet existing conceptualizations of internet privacy concerns have solely focused on the control of personal information release and on online interactions with online vendors. Drawing on the theory of personal boundaries, this study revisits the theoretical foundation of online privacy and proposes a multidimensional peer-related privacy concern construct, that focuses on privacy violations from online peers. We term this new construct “Peer Privacy Concern” (PrPC) and define it as the general feeling of being unable to maintain functional personal boundaries in online activities as a result of the behavior of online peers. This construct consists of four dimensions comprised of a reconceptualization of information privacy concerns to also reflect privacy concerns with respect to peers’ handling of self-shared information and with respect to peer-shared information about one’s self, and three new dimensions that tap into the arising privacy needs from virtual interactions (i.e., virtual territory privacy concern and communication privacy concern) as well as from the need to maintain psychological independence (i.e., psychological privacy concern). These new dimensions, which are rooted in the theory of personal boundaries, are prominent privacy needs in online social interactions with peers. However, they are absent from previous privacy concern conceptualizations. Scales for measuring this new construct are developed and empirically validated. Collapse

Abstract: This study seeks to develop and test a theory-driven model of technology addiction within the context of smartphone use. Drawing on incentive-sensitisation theory, we proposed a nomological network that centres on a second-order factor of smartphone addiction from a psychological perspective. We empirically evaluated the proposed model against longitudinal data collected from 441 smartphone users. Our analysis from structural equation modelling indicates that our two-factor measurement of smartphone addiction (heightened desire and mobile social interaction) is a parsimonious alternative to the four-factor model. In addition, our findings suggest that addiction and its negative consequences differ in their effects on subsequent perceptions, such as perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment. We also found that personal innovativeness in information technology and a perception of loneliness explain a large amount of variation in smartphone addiction. Overall, the present study significantly contributes to the information systems literature by offering a refined model of smartphone addiction that effectively describes pathological smartphone use while correcting critical biases in existing models. Abstract: Because use is the critical link between information technology (IT) investments and organizational performance, IS researchers have focused attention on the post-adoption phase—after organizational IT are installed and used by employees in their work. To that end, recent theoretical work introduced IT identity—representing the strength of individuals’ self-identification with an IT—as a means to explain richer, post-adoption, IT use behaviors. Utilizing multiple methods and surveys, and focused on use of two different technologies, this study develops theory-based measures to establish IT identity’s utility for expanding the understanding of post-adoption use. Results show IT identity predicts different IT use behaviors and richer forms of use. Further, IT identity maintains its predictive validity when embedded in a model with other predictors. Given the importance of such value-creating behaviors in today’s multi-functional-platform based IT environments, our findings suggest future research consider IT identity an instrumental part of models seeking to explain IT use in post-adoption contexts. Abstract: We study how the cognitive complexity of chief executive officers (CEOs) changes during their tenures. Drawing from prior theory and research, we argue that CEOs attain gradually greater role-specific knowledge, or expertise, as their tenures advance, which yields more complex thinking. Beyond examining the main effect of CEO tenure on cognitive complexity, we consider three moderators of this relationship, each of which is expected to influence the accumulation of expertise over a CEO’s time in office: industry dynamism, industry jolts, and CEO positional power. We conduct our tests on a sample of 684 CEOs of public corporations. The analytic centerpiece of our study is a novel index of CEO cognitive complexity based on CEOs’ language patterns in the question-and-answer portions of quarterly conference calls. As part of our extensive theory of measurement, we provide evidence of the reliability and validity of our index. Our results indicate that CEOs, in general, experience substantial increases in cognitive complexity over their time in office. Examined moderators somewhat, but modestly, alter this general trajectory, and nonlinearities are not observed. We discuss the implications of our findings. Collapse

Abstract: While policy makers to cyber security experts call for improving cyber hygiene, no one really knows what it means. In fact, there exists no scholarly research explicating the concept or its measurement. This research makes an important contribution by conceptualizing cyber hygiene, operationalizing it, empirically identifying its sub-dimensions, and developing an inventory for it. The research achieves this with a mixed-methods approach, where using a combination of experts and a convenience sample of Internet users, it develops the initial items reflecting the construct, empirically refines the items, confirms its dimensions, and validates its fit. The outcome is an 18-item Cyber Hygiene Inventory (CHI) that measures five distinct dimensions of user cyber hygiene. Finally, the research demonstrates why cyber hygiene matters. Using the CHI it shows how cyber hygiene significantly predicts aspects of human cyber interaction that are pivotal to cyber safety including user self-beliefs about technology, how they cognitively process information online, and their online banking behavior. Abstract: Consumers’ brand associations offer qualitative explanations on a brand’s success or failure and are typically elicited using survey-based instruments. Marketers are interested in time- and cost-efficient, automated brand association elicitation approaches. To enable an automated brand association elicitation, we show that brand associations can be formalized and described by patterns of linguistic part-of-speech sequences that differ from ordinary speech which is required for an automated extraction via text mining. Furthermore, we provide evidence that UGC is an adequate data-source for an automated brand association elicitation. We do that by comparing survey-based and UGC data-sources using linguistic part-of-speech sequence- and n-gram analysis as well as sequential pattern mining. We contribute to exiting research by establishing prerequisites for the construction of novel information systems that use text mining to extract brand associations automatically from UGC. Collapse

Abstract: A Design Science Research project is presented, describing the creation of an Information System for the assessment of human competences while supporting learning. First, requirements that emanate from current mainstream competence evaluation practice are introduced. Then, design principles are presented to address the design requirements. Finally, design features are discussed that represent a concrete instantiation of the design principles in a working system prototype. The output of the design, development, and evaluation of the artefact are presented as an Information Systems Design Theory. Abstract: To avoid missing technological opportunities and to counteract risks, organizations have to scan and monitor developments in the external environment through a structured process of technology intelligence. Previous approaches in tech mining—the application of text mining for technology intelligence —have primarily focused on the elicitation of technical or legal information from web, patent, or research databases. However, knowledge of consumers’ needs, fears, and hopes is a prerequisite for the success of an emerging technology in the marketplace. Thus, we claim that technology intelligence needs to also consider consumers’ technology perceptions. Hence, we propose a novel and comprehensive approach to collect user-generated content from the web and apply text mining to derive consumer perceptions. In doing so, we align with an established tech-mining process. This paper illustrates our approach on the emerging technology of autonomous driving and provides an initial indication of concurrent validity. Collapse

Abstract: HCI research has acknowledged the importance of aesthetics for user interfaces by examining its effects on users’ attitudes and reactions. However, evidence for effects on task performance is mixed. By manipulating chat background colour in a within-subjects design, this study investigates the effects of a less attractive vs. attractive chat interface in a collaborative setting. Participants performed the simulated role of a nurse, a doctor, laboratory technician, or specialist as a member of an emergency response team that had to diagnose patients within a given time. The data of 184 participants during three rounds of the same task was analysed for effects of the colour manipulation on emotion, affect, and team performance. Chat background colour was randomly varied in round 2 and 3. Although participants clearly preferred the attractive to the less attractive version, analyses of variance revealed that neither their attitudes nor their performance as a group was significantly influenced by the colour manipulation. We discuss (1) further analyses on the individual level and qualitative analyses of the chat protocols, (2) possible explanations such as the performance criterion, nature of the task, and aesthetics manipulation, and (3) future directions for research on the link between aesthetics and performance. Abstract: Telemedicine services may improve the quality of life of individuals while also reducing the costs of service provisioning. They represent an important but as yet understudied type of complex services that integrates many stakeholders acting in service value networks. These complex services typically comprise a combination of information technology (IT) services and highly person-oriented, non-IT services, and are characterized by long service delivery periods. In such an environment, it is particularly difficult to generate successful and sustainable business models, which are necessary for the widespread provision of telemedicine services. Following a design research approach, we develop and evaluate the CompBizMod framework, a morphological box allowing for: (1) the analysis, description, and classification of telemedicine business models, (2) the identification of white spots for future business opportunities, (3) and the identification of patterns for successful business models. We contribute to the literature by presenting a specific business model framework and identifying three business model patterns in the telemedicine industry. We exhibit how business models for complex services can be decomposed into their constituent elements and present an easy and replicable approach for identifying business model patterns in a given industry.
