Abstract: In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, German government introduced a "stay-at-home" policy to slow the spread of the virus. This, in turn, resulted in universities introducing online teaching, which thereby fostered technology-related stress perception for students. Based on social presence theory and current technostress research, we analyze the effects of loneliness on perceptions of technostress in online teaching and the moderating effect of social network services. Using a sample size of 327, our findings show that loneliness has a negative impact on technostress perception and that the use of social network services diminishes technostress perception even more. These findings are an important contribution to current technostress research, as the effects of digital technologies can no longer be considered in isolation, but should rather be understood as the interplay of different digital communication tools from various perspectives and contextual settings. Abstract: Media capabilities influence consumers' trust in online exchanges. However, in the sharing economy, where consumers interact with service providers through a platform, conventional models of trust must be revisited. Our research identifies how media synchronicity and anonymity influence the relative importance of institution-based trust in sharing economy exchanges. We collected data from 248 ride-hailing customers and 288 cryptocurrency users to test a moderated mediation model of trust. We find that in the sharing economy media synchronicity and anonymity lead customers to develop trust toward service providers directly and undermine the impact of institutional trust mechanisms. This indicates that in sharing economy exchanges, trust can be built directly with the service provider, or alternatively, indirectly through the platform. Consequently, organizations in the sharing economy can strategically design their systems to engender trust by choosing between (1) emphasizing the platform's reputation or (2) encouraging direct communication between the consumer and service providers. Abstract: Drawing on optimal distinctiveness theory and Jellinek’s concept of the Normative Force of the Factual, we provide an alternative explanation for how the normality of gender imbalance in IT-driven start-ups (i.e., the fact that there are far more men than women) becomes normativity (what everyone expects to see), and eventually an imperative for those desiring to enter the field. We uncover the process used to pressure female founders of IT start-ups into being like the prototypical actor, usually male, and how failing to do so reduces audience support. This process is self-referential and self-enforcing and thus detached from efforts to reduce hurdles and obstacles for female founders. Our article provides recommendations on how to break this self-referential cycle. Collapse

Abstract: Organisations increasingly rely on algorithms to exert automated managerial control over workers, referred to as algorithmic control (AC). The use of AC is already commonplace with platform-based work in the gig economy, where independent workers are paid for completing a given task (or “gig”). The combination of independent work alongside intensive managerial monitoring and guidance via AC raises questions about how gig workers perceive AC practices and judge their legitimacy, which could help explain critical worker behaviours such as turnover and non-compliance. Based on a three-dimensional conceptualisation of micro-level legitimacy tailored to the gig work context (autonomy, fairness, and privacy), we develop a research model that links workers’ perceptions of two predominant forms of AC (gatekeeping and guiding) to their legitimacy judgements and behavioural reactions. Using survey data from 621 Uber drivers, we find empirical support for the central role of micro-level legitimacy judgements in mediating the relationships between gig workers’ perceptions of different AC forms and their continuance intention and workaround use. Contrasting prior work, our study results show that workers do not perceive AC as a universally “bad thing” and that guiding AC is in fact positively related to micro-level legitimacy judgements. Abstract: Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) provide advice to physicians that could save patients’ lives, but they could also make physicians feel losing face. Considering the pivotal role of face in social interactions in China, this research attempts to understand Chinese physicians’ dilemma of choosing between saving face or saving patients and how this dilemma makes them reluctant to follow CDSS recommendations. Drawing from the dual process theory, we postulate that physicians’ resistance to CDSS recommendations is reduced by their rational perception of the system’s usefulness and increased by their experiential belief of face loss and that these effects are contingent on two contextual factors, professional autonomy, and time pressure. Based on a longitudinal field survey with 182 physicians and follow-up interviews in a large Chinese hospital, we find support for the opposing effects of face loss and perceived usefulness. Furthermore, we show that face loss has a stronger effect on CDSS resistance at a high level of professional autonomy. In addition, when time pressure is high, perceived usefulness more strongly reduces while face loss more strongly increases CDSS resistance, thus amplifying the dilemma. This research makes a significant contribution by integrating the concept of face loss into information technology resistance research and revealing the dark side of professional autonomy and the paradoxical moderating effect of time pressure in the healthcare context. Abstract: The current information systems (IS) literature treats information technology (IT) ambidexterity as a single aggregated construct, assuming perfect balance or simultaneously strong IT exploration and exploitation. Taking a different perspective, we propose that IT ambidexterity can be achieved through a proportional balance between its two dimensions, and the optimal balance depends on the specific context. Based on matched-pair data from a field survey of business and IT executives, we find a three-way interaction among environmental dynamism, IT exploration, and IT exploitation such that IT ambidexterity matters only in dynamic environments. More important, through polynomial regression and response surface analysis, we find that the proportionally balanced, rather than the perfectly balanced, combinations of IT exploitation and exploration maximize organizational agility. We further demonstrate how the effect of proportional balance of IT ambidexterity varies in stable and dynamic environments. This study offers a novel understanding: IT exploration and IT exploitation do not need to be equally strong to improve agility, and their proportional balance associated with maximal agility varies across different levels of environmental dynamism. Abstract: This article evaluates how firms are able to enhance the effectiveness of their Risk Management Infrastructure (RMI) by using Big Data Analytics (BDA) to improve their risk resilience capability. A theoretical model is developed and the corresponding hypothesis is tested through a survey instrument and quantitative analysis. Abstract: Evidence shows that older users have lower performance levels for IT-enabled tasks than younger users. This is alarming at a time when the workforce is rapidly aging and organizational technologies are proliferating. Since the explanation for these lower performance levels remains unclear, managers are not sure how to help older users realize their full potential as contributors to organizational success. The research model presented here identifies the declining information-processing speed of older workers as the cause of their reduced capacity to perform IT-enabled tasks. According to the model, IT experience and IT self-efficacy reduce the negative impacts of this decline, whereas IT overload and the effort cost of IT use aggravate them. To test the model, data were collected using three complementary studies. The results supported the model and indicated five ways that organizations can help older users improve their capacity to perform IT-enabled tasks. Additional data collected in interviews with human resources directors confirmed the relevance of these solutions. Collapse

Abstract: As older workers retire, their rich knowledge of the organization and its environment literally walks out the door. By means of electronic knowledge repositories (EKRs), organizations can prevent this knowledge from disappearing. However, older workers do not contribute to these knowledge repositories as much as younger workers do, which is especially problematic once they reach retirement age. Drawing on the literature on proactive work behavior, we argue that older employees use EKRs less innovatively and that this reduces their knowledge contributions. We explain this age-related decline with decreases in job crafting behavior. Further, we hypothesize that there are three IT-related mitigating factors that boost the knowledge contributions of older workers, namely, EKR self-efficacy, Trust in EKR, and Perceived enjoyment when using EKRs. By reducing the relevance of job crafting for innovative use, these factors will allow older workers to exploit previously unused features of EKRs to support new tasks. Collapse

Abstract: Agile information systems development (ISD) strives for a high amount of interaction between the agile team and stakeholders to ensure that high quality software within commonly defined project goals is produced. The literature has acknowledged that agile ISD significantly changes the work of team members. How do agile practices affect the work of stakeholders? Unfortunately, little theory exists to answer this question. This paper addresses this gap by investigating the effect of agile practices on stakeholders’ job satisfaction. Adopting a mixedmethods approach, we use a review of the literature with an exploratory case study to develop the theoretical model, which was evaluated with a survey among stakeholders in agile ISD projects. We contribute to agile ISD literature by providing empirical evidence on stakeholders’ job satisfaction and highlight the relevance of interaction and collaboration between team members and stakeholders in agile ISD projects.
