Abstract: Several organisations have introduced a new leadership role, the Chief Digital Officer (CDO), as a centralised role in their top management team (TMT), tasked with accelerating and coordinating their digital transformation. While previous research proposes a complementary, tight alignment between the CDO and the Chief Information Officer (CIO), role redundancies and the fight for recognition and resources also suggest an inherent tension. We provide insights into the CIO-CDO collaboration quality based on role, TMT cooperation, conflict theory, and a dyadic design approach of 11 CIO-CDO relationships with 33 expert interviews in two waves. Our findings indicate that the CIO-CDO relationship may not always be as complementary as proposed in the literature; instead, in the vast majority of our dyads, there is too much role conflict to achieve tight alignment, leading to separation behaviour between the roles. We identify the involvement in the introduction of the other role, the CIO demand-side orientation, and the CDO supply-side orientation as important contingency factors determining the quality of the CIO-CDO relationship. Finally, unless the CIO-CDO relationship resembles a perfect match, a unified Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO) role may better resolve the challenges we identify in our sample’s dyads. Abstract: race data—users’ digital records when interacting with technology—can reveal their cognitive dynamics when making decisions on websites in real time. Here, we present a tracedata method, analyzing movements captured via a computer mouse, to assess potential fraud when filling out an online form. In contrast to existing frauddetection methods, which analyze information after submission, mousemovement traces can capture the cognitive deliberations as possible indicators of fraud as it is happening. We report two controlled studies using different tasks, where participants could freely commit fraud to benefit themselves financially. As they performed the tasks, we captured mousecursor movement data and found that participants who entered fraudulent responses moved their mouse significantly more slowly and with greater deviation. We show that the extent of fraud matters such that more extensive fraud increases movement deviation and decreases movement speed. These results demonstrate the efficacy of analyzing mousemovement traces to detect fraud during online transactions in real time, enabling organizations to confront fraud proactively as it is happening at internet scale. Our method of analyzing actual user behaviors in real time can complement other behavioral methods in the context of fraud and a variety of other contexts and settings. Collapse

Abstract: Information systems development (ISD) has been a fundamental topic in MISQ from its first volume (Juergens 1977, Kling 1977. Focus of the Research CurationAn early challenge for us in preparing this curation was that ISD was not defined precisely in any of the MISQ articles we reviewed, despite early recommendations to do so (Moore 1979, p. 31). The best definitions we could find tended to be mere descriptions of activities in the systems development lifecycle (Juergens 1977, Swanson 1989, Slaughter et al. 2006. To address this problem, we developed the following definition of ISD to focus the curation.ISD is the entire suite of development activities (e.g., planning, analysis, design, building, testing, and maintenance) undertaken by agents (humans [individuals/ collectives] or software) to create a working information system. ISD is embedded in a social, organizational, and technical context with stakeholders who influence and are influenced by the ISD activities.For papers to be included in the curation, we did not require them to address every element of the definition. Nevertheless, we required them to match at least several elements of it. The definition focused our search and, in turn, our analysis of the papers helped us to refine the definition.With this definition in mind, we examined the titles and abstracts of all MISQ articles. We identified 107 potentially relevant articles. We then removed six articles deemed only marginally relevant. Our final set comprised 101 articles that had a core focus on ISD.Of the 107 articles, 67 articles were published from 1977-1999 and 34 from 2000 and 2021. We do not believe that the reducing publication rate reflects a reduction in ISD's significance. Rather, we believe it reflects the burgeoning of ISD-related topics covered in other MISQ curations, such as IT project management, IS control & governance, and IS sourcing). To minimize duplication among curations, we only include articles from those other curations in this curation if they make a core ISD contribution (e.g., Rai et al. 2009, Gregory et al. 2013, and Benaroch et al. 2016. Progression of Research in MISQ to 1979|: Focus on ISD practices and techniquesThe earliest papers focused on general ISD concepts, frameworks, and techniques. For example, researchers discussed the efficacy of concepts such as decoupling (Juergens 1977), heuristics (Berrisford and Wetherbe 1978), and team structures (Locander et al. 1979). Others focused on measuring ISD quality (Halloran et al. 1978) and learning how organizational strategy/process supports ISD (Moore 1979). Researchers also recognized users as critical actors in ISD (e.g., Kling 1977, Alter 1978, Schmitt and Kozar 1978, Senn 1978aMcLean 1979). Authors rarely used an explicit theoretical lens in early articles. Instead, they generally adopted a practitioner-informed lens. 1980s: Focus on organizational and managerial issuesISD research in the 1980s centered on questions related to organizational problems and the opportunities provided by IS. Abstract: Professional sports has evolved from a game to an organization that has been codified, strategized, and commercialized. One factor that is shaping the sports industry is the pervasiveness of social media. On the one hand, social media is used as a powerful medium for distributing and getting news, engaging in topical discussions, and empowering brands. On the other hand, social media has become a crucial mouthpiece for athletes to interact with peers, share opinions, thoughts, and feelings. However, millions of followers, tweets, and likes later, researchers, practitioners, and athletes alike ask whether social media has an impact on an athlete’s performance. We conducted a social media usage and a sentiment analysis of 124,341 Twitter tweets extracted from 31 tennis athletes. We linked these data to 8,095 corresponding match day performances. The results show that high social media usage has a significant negative impact on athletes’ performance. Collapse

Abstract: ICT projects are considered an important means of achieving development goals in developing countries. Although voluminous, the research to date is inconsistent in theorizing how, or why, development outcomes do or do not occur following the introduction of ICT4D. To better understand how and why ICT projects succeed, and even what success means in the ICT4D context, we conducted a literature review of ICT4D studies published during the period 2000–2016. We find that the very meaning of development varies, with four meanings of development emerging from the literature: (1) development as increased freedom, (2) development as expanded inclusion, (3) development as increased economic productivity, and (4) development as improved well-being. An ICT might succeed according to one meaning of development while simultaneously hindering achievement according to another meaning. As revealed by our analysis of the literature, these four perspectives suffer from some limitations, not least among them being the imposition of colonialist views of development on the recipients of the ICT4D. To address the limitations, we employ postcolonial theory to derive a new theory of ICT4D in which development is defined as an increase in power parity between dominant stakeholders and intended beneficiaries. Abstract: ICTs can positively influence development outcomes. However, ICT4D projects have achieved limited success in achieving their development objectives. In this study, we conduct a literature review of ICT4D studies conducted over the period 2006 - 2016. We find that theory linking ICT use and development impact is lacking, and that mobile devices might offer high positive impact possibilities than personal computers. We also find that studies characterize development in different ways: 1) development as expanded digital inclusion, 2) development as increased economic productivity, 3) development as expanded freedom, and 4) development as increased well-being. Across these development perspectives, however, conflict among stakeholders impacts development outcomes. By examining the literature under the lens of postcolonial theory, we find that power asymmetry among stakeholders might increase the resource dependency of beneficiary communities on donors, and might lead to the former resisting further ICT interventions. Abstract: This study aims to provide a better understanding of how organizations can manage public conflict and firestorms in social media spheres. We develop an agent-based simulation model of conflicts in firm-hosted online communities and find that a collaborating conflict management style characterized by high levels of cooperativeness and assertiveness helps to successfully handle conflict. However, the effectiveness of this collaborative style is highly dependent on contingency factors related to the participating individuals and the social structure within the community itself, such as the number of moderators and aggressors present in the community, their credibility, as well as the overall opinion of the community. Depending on these factors, collaborating and accommodating conflict management becomes more or less successful. Under some configurations it is even less effective than more competitive and assertive management styles. Therefore, to successfully handle conflict and restrain the escalation of a firestorm, organizations need to optimally adapt their conflict management style to varying conditions by considering individual-level and community-level characteristics. Abstract: In the light of recent cyber-attacks, it has become imperative for organizations to predict breaches in an accurate and comprehensive manner. In this study, we assess the impact of the external environment as well as factors internal to the organization. We propose the AVICS-Eco Framework to (i) predict cyberattacks in organizations, (ii) assess critical vulnerabilities, (iii) aid IS managers to plan security investments, and, (iv) decide what to patch and when to patch. We validated our model using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling. We have used CSI-FBI, Ponemon and Checkpoint Survey data from 1997 to 2015. As a recommendation, CTOs should be cautious with the vulnerable software of specific categories. We derived that software vendors need to prioritize patches on Networks before Operating Systems. Firewalls were found to be superior in comparison to anti-viruses. Finally, we found limited support for cybersecurity legal provisions as attack inhibitors in the United States. Collapse

Abstract: Members of work groups are highly interdependent and often share incompatible values, objectives, and opinions. As a result, conflict frequently arises. Given the profound impact of conflict on group effectiveness, scholars have sought to identify strategies that can mitigate its downsides and leverage its upsides. Yet research on conflict management strategies has accumulated inconsistent results. In this Perspectives piece, we argue that these inconsistent findings can be resolved if scholars take a more expansive view of the consequences of conflict management strategies: whereas existing research considers how individual strategies influence a single group conflict type (relational, status, process, or task), we consider the impact of individual strategies on all four conflict types. After building a typology by organizing strategies according to the conflict type that each is best equipped to manage, we argue that the strategies most appropriate for managing one type of conflict may systematically backfire by escalating other conflict types. For example, the adoption of a superordinate identity is likely to resolve relational conflict, yet exacerbate status conflict. In addition to uncovering these instances of “negative spillovers,” we shed light on the rarer phenomena of “positive spillovers,” which occur when conflict management strategies resolve conflict types they were not originally designed to influence. By highlighting how individual conflict management strategies influence multiple conflict types—often in contrasting ways—this Perspectives article reconciles conflicting findings and redirects the literature by providing scholars with new recommendations on how to study conflict management in work groups.
