Exploring ideation and implementation openness in open innovation projects: IT-enabled absorptive capacity perspective

Abstract: Advancements in information technology (IT) have made organizational boundaries so porous, thereby resulting in a trend toward leveraging external knowledge for innovation. However, firms experience significant obstacles in drawing external knowledge. This study aims to disentangle the role of IT-enabled absorptive capacity in new product development performance. The research model was tested with survey data of open innovation projects from 152 firms. Our findings indicate that IT-enabled absorptive capability improves open innovation project performance in terms of new product innovativeness and product speed to market, but we do not detect a significant direct influence of openness on performance. Our findings also show that the interaction of IT-enabled absorptive capacity and ideation openness significantly amplifies new product innovativeness while the interaction of IT-enabled absorptive capacity and implementation openness accelerates the product speed to market. This study theoretically contributes by building an IT-enabled absorptive capacity theory in the open innovation context and uncovering the effects of two dimensions of openness. In practice, it offers managers strategies to successfully conduct open innovation projects in deploying effective ITs and leveraging various types of openness during the two phases. Collapse

Abstract: Drawing on expectation confirmation research, we develop hypotheses regarding the effect of compensation on key customer outcomes following a major data breach and consequent service recovery effort. Data were collected in a longitudinal field study of Sony customers during their data breach in 2011. A total of 144 customers participated in the two-phase data collection that began when the breach was announced and concluded after reparations were made. Using polynomial modeling and response surface analysis, we demonstrate that a modified assimilation–contrast model explained perceptions of service quality and continuance intention and a generalized negativity model explained repurchase intention. The results of our work contribute to research on data breaches and service failure by demonstrating the impacts of compensation on customer outcomes. Abstract: The Internet has changed the way we communicate and interact with other people. Individuals become loosen up and feel less restrained to say or do things in the online space that they would not ordinarily say and do in the offline environment. This online disinhibition effect has been found to be associated with online aggressive and deviant behaviors. Though the concept of online disinhibition has been introduced to the literature for almost two decades, there is still a lack of consensus regarding its conceptualization and operationalization. In this research-in-progress paper, we first revisit the concept of online disinhibition. We then propose a rigorous approach in scale development and validation. We believe that this research will contribute to the development of literature related to the societal impacts of technology use. The newly developed and validated measures of online disinhibition will be added to the repository of rigorous research instruments. Collapse

Abstract: The objective of this study is to gain a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the critical success factors of location-based services. Electronic brainstorming technique was used to gather the opinions of an expert group of practitioners, researchers, and users on the critical success factors of location-based services. By grouping similar factors together based on past literature, 15 categories of critical success factors were identified. Information quality, personalizable or preference setting, and privacy are the three most mentioned critical success factors. For the next stage of this research, students will be recruited to rank and rate these critical success factors. The results of this research will highlight potential areas for research and development, and provide guidelines for practitioners to formulate strategies to increase consumer adoption. Collapse

Abstract: Internet banking in Jordan has developed rapidly since the year 2001, as most Jordanian banks have adopted some form of Internet usage and launched websites to serve their customers. This study extends the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) by adding perceived facilitating conditions and personality dimensions, two factors that have been suggested as important determinants of technology adoption. The frame of the study was -counter bank customers‖ sampled in three banks from three major cities in Jordan. The results indicated partial support for the UTAUT with respect to the predictors' effect on behavioral intentions. The extended model supported the influence of performance expectancy, social influence, self-efficacy, perceived trust, and locus of control on the individual's intentions to use Internet banking. Implications for research and practice, limitations, future research, and conclusions are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Abstract.  Much of our prior knowledge of information systems (IS) usage is based on utilitarian systems such as personal productivity software and organizational applications. However, new generations of systems, such as online video games (OVGs), have since emerged that aim at enhancing users' hedonic outcomes like entertainment rather than utilitarian outcomes such as productivity. Prior models of utilitarian system usage provide a limited understanding of one's usage of hedonic systems, given the motivational differences between using these two types of systems. Theoretical modifications instead are required to extend the current models to hedonic systems. Expanding the research on attitude theories, we propose an initial model for usage of interactive hedonic systems, replacing perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use with perceived enjoyment and social image as the core cognitive drivers of usage, and further linking these beliefs to different technological attributes. The initial model is empirically validated using a survey of OVG usage among 485 student subjects. For IS usage research, this paper proposes and validates one of the earliest usage models of hedonic systems. For practitioners, this study provides some guidelines for manufacturers of hedonic systems on how to derive the most return on their system development efforts. Collapse

Abstract: Abstract.  Knowledge workers in distributed work environments require substantial communication with colleagues and supervisors to perform their work activities, and collaborative technologies, like groupware, continue to improve the potential for such communication. This study investigates how an improvement in collaborative technology among a group of knowledge teleworkers impacts their communication patterns. The study focuses on one communication-based work process: knowledge sharing. The research involves a 6-month exploratory longitudinal case study of a group of teleworkers where a new groupware technology was implemented. The results indicate that while there are fewer instances of communication among group members after the technology is implemented, communication becomes more centralized around the district manager. These results suggest that increased collaborative technologies result in an adjustment between explicit and tacit knowledge sharing, as the availability of a centralized and updateable database reduces workgroup communications. However, consistent with structuration theory, telework group members do use communication technologies to address their most apparent needs and concerns. Other potential explanations and implications of these findings are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Globalization of production and the increasing competitive pace spurs greater business use of online networks. As economic globalization extends its reach over cities and regions, the positions of regional economies within the emerging global paradigm is changing. Only those regions and cities that can mobilize assets for local advantage are expected to succeed. This research examines the role of electronic commerce (EC) and the implications of location for industrial operations through the lens of management. A resource-based perspective and Porter’s (1990) frameworks provide the theoretical underpinning for this work. Our findings reveal varying results between industries and across cities. Industries with well-configured inputs are more likely to experience efficiency in EC activities and outputs, given conducive operational conditions. However firm-specific feature was not linked to improved output, a finding inconsistent with prior studies. Finally, EC business models that focus on operational efficiency strongly complement the historically relevant location variable in industrial undertakings. Collapse

Abstract: As organizations implement more and more distributed work arrangements such as telecommuting, there is a need to understand the determinants of success of this new work setting. This research investigated three variables believed to impact outcomes in telecommuting: the availability of information system technology, the availability of communication technologies, and the communication patterns of telecommuters within their work groups. Two perspectives are used in this study. The direct effects of these three variables on perceived productivity, performance, and satisfaction were tested. A second perspective, based on the concept of fit and contingency theory, posits that successful telecommuting outcomes, measured by perceived productivity, performance, and satisfaction, are predicted by interactions between these independent variables. The study was conducted by surveying multiple respondents from different organizations who were members of work groups in which some or all employees were telecommuters. The results indicate that technology variables positively impact productivity, performance, and satisfaction of telecommuters, while the interaction between the technology variables is significant in predicting perceived productivity. Work group communication, as measured by the centrality of individuals, negatively affects perceived productivity and performance. The paper presents a discussion of the theoretical significance of these findings, and offers recommendations for future research. Collapse

Abstract: The main purpose of this study is to determine the mix of organizational and technical skills demanded of Webmasters, and the degree to which those skills influence job performance. The study is composed of two parts. First, a job-content analysis of 800 Webmaster positions is conducted in order to determine the mix of skills demanded of Webmasters by employers. Second, a survey of 232 Webmasters is conducted to test the relationships between those skills and job performance. The job-content analysis suggested that employers seek technical skills over organizational skills, and, in contrast, the survey results showed that Webmasters regard organizational skills as more important in performing their jobs. Structured equation modeling on the survey data showed that deficiency in both technical and organizational skills leads to lower job performance. Moreover, the effect of organizational skill deficiencies on job performance was found to be larger than that of technical skill deficiencies. For researchers, the establishment of an empirical link between job skills and job performance opens the field to further research in the skills of information systems personnel. For employers, the results suggest more attention should be paid to attracting organizational skills when recruiting information systems personnel, such as Webmasters. Collapse
