Abstract: Users of rival technology platforms, such as Android-versus-iOS, often harbor hostile opposition to each other. The dominant perspective of technology resistance, conceptualized as technology inertia, cannot explain such strong oppositional behavior. We propose a threat to tech self-esteem construct that captures distinct threat perceptions and offers a unified explanation for oppositional intentions. We conducted an empirical study of smartphone users, where we find that the threat to technology self-esteem arises from distinct antecedents and offers a singular explanation for opposition. Moreover, we show the unintended consequences of employing lockin strategies and provide advice on why and how to mitigate them. Collapse

Abstract: Cutting-edge technologies like big data analytics (BDA), artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, blockchain, and digital twins have a profound impact on the sustainability of the production system. In addition, it is argued that turbulence in technology could negatively impact the adoption of these technologies and adversely impact the sustainability of the production system of the firm. The present study has demonstrated that the role of technological turbulence as a moderator could impact the relationships between the sustainability the of production system with its predictors. The study further analyses the mediating role of operational sustainability which could impact the firm performance. A theoretical model has been developed that is underpinned by dynamic capability view (DCV) theory and firm absorptive capacity theory. This model was verified by PLS-SEM with 412 responses from various manufacturing firms in India. There exists a positive and significant influence of AI and other cutting-edge technologies for keeping the production system sustainable. Collapse

Abstract: This paper tests the meta-analysis based unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (meta-UTAUT) model to predict the behavioral intentions of organizational users and their use behavior to artificial intelligence (AI) integrated customer relationship management (CRM) systems. Data was collected from 315 organizational users in India. The hypotheses draw on the theoretical underpinnings which have been statistically validated. Results show that CRM quality and satisfaction significantly influences an organization’s employees attitudes and intentions to use AI integrated CRM systems. The compatibility of CRM systems has, however, a limited impact on employees attitudes. The findings, which are aligned with the extended UTAUT model, provide useful insights into organizations and decision-makers for designing AI integrated CRM systems. Collapse

Abstract: Partial least squares (PLS) path modeling is a widely used method in the information systems (IS) discipline for estimating linear structural equation models. At the same time, researchers have debated its relative merits compared to simple summed scores or to covariance-based estimation of structural equation models. In this paper, we comment on recent developments in PLS to ensure that IS researchers have up-to-date methodological knowledge and best practices if they decide to use PLS. In particular, we briefly review its mechanisms, its well-known properties, and its usage history in IS research. We briefly revisit a high-impact critique and debate a few years ago to identify the critical arguments around current PLS practices and use. That critique proved to be the driver for many advances in the PLS method and its applications which we discuss extensively and use to make 14 recommendations for how and when to use PLS or alternatives.Simply put, most IS researchers do not study research questions where predictive modeling would be applicable but focus on testing theory that requires explanatory models. If predictive modeling pertains to their study, researchers should clearly explain the predictions' purpose and usefulness and use operative prediction (i.e., mixed formative-reflective) to assess their models' out-of-sample prediction at the individual level as Shmueli et al. (2016) and Evermann and Tate (2016) recommend. Abstract: When we were first invited to write an essay on the use of PLS for CAIS, we wanted to focus on recent developments to help applied IS researchers, and the CAIS community of authors, reviewers, and editors make use of the latest research on and methodological advances in PLS. Recognizing that Information Systems is arguably the discipline in which the use of PLS as an alternative to CB-SEM originated and is most widely used, we realized that, pragmatically, our essay must focus on how to use PLS, not whether to use PLS.We received six interesting responses from researchers active in the PLS community. Their thoughts on our presentation of recent developments in PLS show very different perspectives with many points of difference amongst points of agreement in all the responses. In this rejoinder, we briefly respond to the received comments, clarify our position and ideas, and identify points of agreement (and disagreement). We emphasize that none of the responses give us cause to revise or eliminate our recommendations in recent developments.Overall, we believe this discussion on PLS to be valuable in advancing the use of PLS in Information Systems, which is, as we show in this rejoinder, an urgent issue. Abstract: How do organizations develop and manage employees’ data analytics skills to create business value and enhance organizational competitive advantage? In order to address this prominent and critical research question for IS research, we conceptualize and operationalize data analytics skills at the individual level and develop a nomological network model to examine its critical antecedents and outcomes from the lens of adaptation structuration theory. We test our core proposition and research model using survey data collected from 258 frontline employees of three data-intensive research institutes in China. We discover that data-driven culture, data analytics affordance, and individual absorptive capacity are positively associated with employees’ data analytics skills, which in turn, have positive influences on their task and innovative performance. We classify the employees into digital immigrants and digital natives based on age and examine the different influences of three salient antecedents on data analytics skills between the two groups. The research findings suggest that data-driven culture plays a more significant role in driving data analytics skills for digital immigrants, while data analytics affordance exhibits a stronger influence on data analytics skills for digital natives. Abstract: Evermann and Rönkkö (2023) review recent developments in partial least squares (PLS) with the aim of providing guidance to researchers. Indeed, the explosion of methodological advances in PLS in the last decade necessitates such overview articles. In so far as the goal is to provide an objective assessment of the technique, such articles are most welcome. Unfortunately, the authors' extraordinary and questionable claims paint a misleading picture of PLS. Our goal in this short commentary is to address selected claims made by Evermann and Rönkkö (2023) using simulations and the latest research. Our objective is to bring a positive perspective to this debate and highlight the recent developments in PLS that make it an increasingly valuable technique in IS and management research in general. Abstract: The purpose of this research is to assess the impact of trust, when balanced with risk and benefit, on consumer intention to adopt mobile payment systems. A research model is created to assess intent based on perceived trust, along with three antecedents – privacy, security, and familiarity – and packaged with an extended valence framework that takes into account the opposing notions of perceived risk and perceived benefit. Following a pilot study of 76 participants, data is collected from a survey of 234 respondents and is analyzed using consistent Partial Least Squares (PLSc). Results indicate that perceived benefit and perceived trust are the most important influences on the intention to use mobile payment systems, and that the perceived risk of using mobile payment systems has little or no impact on intention to use. The risk result is explained by motivational avoidance theory and institutional dependence. Collapse

Abstract: Manufacturing firms have increasingly relied on inter-organizational systems (IOS) to facilitate inter-firm transactions and integration with suppliers. However, they frequently face various impediments, such as adversarial behaviours and misalignments, when trying to integrate with IOS (i.e., IOS integration or IT/IS integration). Based on the perspectives of mutual adaptation of technology and organization and socio-technical systems, this study develops two compromise constructs critical for IOS integration: inter-firm process compromise and technology compromise. These two compromise constructs, treated as neutral alignment, are proposed to affect the achievement of higher IOS integration. Based on 146 matched-pair samples, the findings demonstrate the importance of technology and inter-firm process compromises in achieving greater IOS integration, which, in turn, enables higher inter-firm dependence and operational performance. This research provides theoretical and practical implications that contribute to our understanding of the role of compromise in facilitating IOS integration. The implications should serve as an important basis for future research in examining IOS integration. Collapse
