Abstract: To enable new digital business models, pre-digital organizations launch entrepreneurial initiatives. However, in developing the required digital capabilities, pre-digital organizations often face challenges as they are marked by the ways they have historically established their organizational identity. Research on how pre-digital organizations can develop digital capabilities remains scarce. This study draws on a single case study to illustrate potential pathways for the development of digital capabilities. Two key characteristics are identified: the source of digital capability development and the set-up of the actors involved. The authors synthesize four possible pathway manifestations, discuss the dynamic nature of pathway combinations, and suggest that managing a portfolio of pathways may be crucial for pre-digital organizations. Therefore, the study contributes to a better understanding of digital transformation in pre-digital organizations. Furthermore, it provides guidance for practitioners to reflect on when deciding which pathways to follow. Collapse

Abstract: Having the right spare part at the right time to the right place for ship maintenance to the minimal possible costs is an exigent management problem that maritime shipping companies face. This is especially challenging in bulk shipping where routes are not fixed, but subsequent port calls depend on spot market dynamics. Thus, spare parts allocation ahead in time is limited, but possible if failures rates of ship components and their timing can be foreseen, so that spare parts can be allocated to hedge against the risk of long waiting times and thus ship downtimes. Companies are very sensitive to the latter due to significant ship operational costs that accrue also during downtime, but without revenues. Thus, reducing ship downtimes by monitoring the condition of components key to the ships performance is essential to the task. However, shipping companies seem far away from applying sophisticated methods for forecasting and planning due to various challenges ranging from data gathering and cultivating an understanding of data quality needs, adaptation to move from preventive towards predictive and condition-based maintenance (CBM) thus enabling the introduction and application of decision support tools for demand forecasting, sourcing, spare parts allocation, and inventory management. In this paper, we investigate the current state of the art of spare parts logistics (SPL) management tightly related to CBM for maritime shipping and discuss the application of methods to the bulk carriage market. Abstract: Digitalization has a broad impact and the risk of external disruption is omnipresent throughout all industries which also applies to IT consulting firms. One response to this threat is to understand better the determinants of how value is created during the joint work on an IT project. Although previous literature offers valuable starting points for explaining value co-creation, no previous research synthesizes service provider and client perspective in a comprehensive model and empirically explains the co-creation of IT consulting service value. We build on the service-dominant (S-D) logic as the fundamental meta-theory and evaluate our deductively derived structural model based on 113 collected responses from IT consulting projects using structural equation modeling. Our major finding is that IT consulting service value only seems to be determined by consultant capabilities. Our findings provide new insights for S-D logic and service science literature and potential for future research. Collapse

Abstract: In response to the increasing demand for sustainable supply chains, companies need to trace, manage and assess their energy and carbon emissions by incorporating a life cycle perspective. Recent studies in the field of Information Systems (IS) have argued that information systems can contribute to more sustainable supply chains by supporting energy and carbon management. Mindful of this potential, a new class of information systems emerges, the Energy and Carbon Management Systems (ECMS). In our study, we focus on this specific class and aim to shed light on their implementation process and any related underlying phenomena in the supply chain. By deploying and demonstrating an ECMS artefact in different settings involving a retail chain and a multinational manufacturing company in the fast moving consumer goods sector, we identify a set of implementation issues such as poor data quality, data inconsistencies, and various data granularity levels. We conclude by formulating a set of recommendations that will guide both practitioners and researchers in developing and implementing energy and carbon management system. Collapse

Abstract: Product recalls can highlight strengths and weaknesses in an organization’s supply chain. To date, few studies have explored the role of information systems in the recall process. This study presents Roth et al. (2008)’s 6Ts of global recall effectiveness as a useful framework for assessing the role of information technology (IT) in the recall process. In this study, we use a qualitative methodology to capture the richness of this phenomenon. The results offer new insights into the value of IT in the recall process. We highlight diverse management strategies utilized by supply chain stakeholders during the recall process. In particular, we discuss important themes that emerged from the data analysis. Abstract: With the emergence of new technologies, companies can organize their electronic data exchanges by implementing hybrid interorganizational information systems (IOS). This paper presents a new analytical framework by considering IOS as the product of interconnections between the parts of IS developed by connected firms to support a given interorganizational process. We focus on updating internal databases through data synchronization between a set of suppliers and a set of clients. From the literature, we built types of sending and receiving systems based on three variables; namely, shared data, structural linkages, and message interdependency. Analytically, we derived possibilities of interconnections between these sending and receiving systems with asymmetric characteristics. In a field study, we empirically investigated IOS built to support product information flows from suppliers' to retailers' internal, databases by considering how suppliers built their sending systems, how retailers built their receiving systems, and how their interconnections led to different forms of IOS. Interconnections occurring between systems with asymmetric characteristics show the existence of several hybrid forms of IOS, both in design and use. We finally explain that, even if companies can benefit from their use, hybrid forms are less efficient than are extreme forms, those that are the result of interconnections between systems with symmetric characteristics. Abstract: Information Technology is often viewed as imposing too much standardization and limiting flexibility in New Product Development (NPD). This paper aims at understanding how the use of Product Lifecycle Management Technology (PLM) contributes to knowledge sharing in an international NPD environment. The research is based on a longitudinal case study of a consumer goods industry group and involved development teams in Europe and local suppliers in China. Knowledge transfer and translation were observed through the reduction of communication glitches among members and increased NPD work with Chinese suppliers. The results of the case study indicate that (1), with an important codification effort, the use of PLM technology resulted in higher data and network transparency and enhanced knowledge transfer; (2) PLM served as a particularly useful tool for knowledge translation especially for boundary spanners in their work relationships. While PLM can be considered the main mechanism for knowledge transfer in this context, the case suggests that knowledge translation requires a boundary spanner intervention and that, with the use of PLM, they reinforce each other. Particularly noteworthy was a positive shift in the boundary spanners' roles from the project leader to the outsourcing engineer. In turn, this unintended consequence reinforced their credibility and the legitimacy of the use of the system with the Chinese suppliers. Collapse

Abstract: In the much-observed field of weblogs, corporate blogs are of particular relevance and interest. This study1 empirically examines the corporate blog phenomenon by reviewing the blog status of 250 companies from the consumer goods industry. Their blogs – if any – were tested with the help of different variables, such as the location of the company, the blog’s updating frequency or its interactivity. This allowed for testing certain hypotheses, in particular concerning the existence of corporate blogs in certain companies, industries and regions, or whether a blog’s traffic rank depends upon these variables. This survey suggests that a blog's traffic rank is significantly influenced by the frequency of blog postings and its interactivity features. These factors seem to greatly depend upon the sales volume of a company. However, the data sample at hand suggests that there is not yet a widespread usage of corporate weblogs. Collapse

Abstract: Electronic exchanges of information between Businesses have continued to grow over recent decades. Though the emergence of new technologies, firms are facing new opportunities to build Interorganizational Information Systems (IOSs) to organize electronic data exchanges to update their own information systems. In this paper, we focus on flows from suppliers to retailers of product information, a set of data that describe the product manufactured by suppliers and retailed by wholesalers to the end consumer. We propose a new methodology to analyze IOSs, by considering how suppliers build their sending systems, how retailers build their receiving systems and how their interconnections lead to the creation of IOSs. Through a qualitative research based on interviews and documentation reviews, we describe and discuss the possibilities of interconnections between sending and receiving systems based on data privacy, structural linkages and message interdependencies.
