Abstract: AI as a Service (AIaaS) is a promising path to leverage AI capabilities from the cloud. However, there is no one-size-fits-all service, but heterogenous service options since interdependent AIaaS characteristics require trade-offs. We lack knowledge on these tradeoffs and how they result from conflicting characteristics. Therefore, we interviewed 39 AIaaS providers, customers, and consultants to provide rich descriptions of interdependent characteristics and uncover resulting trade-offs and their consequences. This study contributes to a better understanding of the inner functioning and interplay of AIaaS characteristics and discusses how this complex nature of service offerings impacts providers' design and customers' selection decisions. Abstract: In the rapidly evolving digital era, firms need to innovate their business models (BMs) to thrive and benefit from new digital technologies. While digital BM innovation (DBMI) can create competitive advantage through differentiation, firms often struggle to create and extract value from digital technologies. In this paper, we analyze 41 cases of BM change and identify three configurations that lead to DBMI and two configurations that do not. These configurations illustrate the BM elements in which digital technologies are used for DBMI and explain how firms use digital technologies for strategic innovation. Combined with existing research on DBMI, this research provides a missing piece of the puzzle to connect specific technologies in the BM to implement a digital business strategy and undergo a digital transformation. For practical purposes, the findings suggest three alternative strategies for DBMI that identify which elements need to be changed together to achieve DBMI. Collapse

Abstract: Participatory modeling (PM) is a craft that is often learned by training ‘on the job’ and mastered through years of practice. There is little explicit knowledge available on identifying and documenting the skills needed to perform PM. In the modeling literature, existing attempts to identify relevant competencies have focused on the specific technical skills required for specific technical model development. The other skills required to organize and conduct the stakeholder process seem to be more vaguely and poorly defined in this context. The situation is complicated by PM being an essentially transdisciplinary craft, with no single discipline or skill set to borrow ideas and recommendations from. In this paper, we aim to set the foundation for both the practice and capacity-building efforts for PM by identifying the relevant core competencies. Our inquiry into this topic starts with reviewing and compiling literature on competencies in problem-solving research areas related to PM (e.g., systems thinking, facilitated model building, operations research, and so forth). We augment our inquiry with results from a PM practitioners’ survey to learn how they perceive the importance of different competencies and how the scope of these competencies may vary across the various roles that participatory modellers play. As a result, we identified five core competency areas essential for PM: systems thinking, modeling, group facilitation, project management and leadership, and, more recently, designing and running virtual workshops and events. Abstract: Data is increasingly seen as a source of value for organizations, requiring employees' skills to collect, transform, and use to improve decision-making. The sum of these skills is named data literacy. This paper aims to develop a tool to assess the data literacy of individuals in the business workforce. Using a design science research approach, we developed a data literacy assessment tool based on 18 core competencies across three skill levels. We tested this survey tool with 243 respondents in a large North American financial company. Our artifact provided an accurate assessment of intra-and inter-individual competencies and the identification of typical profiles required following the employees' role as data consumers or producers. This study is the first to propose a complete definition of the data literacy construct with a validated data literacy competencies assessment tool adapted to the business workforce. Collapse

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently one of the most prevalent technological breakthroughs. The nature of AI provides a multitude of action potentials in business process management (BPM). However, the diversity and complexity of underlying tools and methods of AI make it difficult for organizations to determine appropriate use cases in business processes, the central unit of BPM. At this point, organizations lack knowledge on how to conceptualize the use of AI in BPM. Against this background, we investigate the action potentials of individual cognitive functions of AI across different contextual factors of business processes by combining an online survey with an interview study by means of a mixed-methods approach. The results provide researchers and practitioners with a comprehensive overview of the action potentials of AI in BPM. Collapse

Abstract: Many workplaces have replaced annual reviews with ongoing performance evaluations, often through the integration and use of real-time feedback applications. These applications allow users to provide feedback through different device mediums. However, organizational leaders are not primarily concerned with convenience: Feedback structure and quality are paramount to the application's effectiveness, and the distinct technological affordances of mobile and desktop devices may yield different feedback comments. This study uniquely investigates the impact of device medium (desktop vs. mobile) usage on textual feedback according to four helpfulness indicators: comment length, subjectivity, specificity, and valence. Analyzing two years of proprietary data obtained through an enterprise real-time feedback application via regression analysis, we interestingly find that the device medium impacts the four distinct helpfulness indicators differently. Our study underscores the impact of device type on evaluation outcomes and derived managerial insights will help organizational leaders looking to optimize real-time feedback app usage. Collapse

This paper contributes a methodological approach based on the jobs-to-be-done theory that assists universities in digitizing their learning and teaching processes. This study applies the Outcome Driven Innovation (ODI) approach to assess students’ learning needs in the learning process of higher education. Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how digital organizational resilience was a key to digital transformation success in the public sector of Denmark. Using a historical research method, we analyze the information systems (IS) history from 1998 to 2019 at all three levels of the public sector in Denmark. This study discovers the historical events regarding the barriers and hindrances to digital transformation in Denmark and shows how resilience enabled continuity in the transformation. Using significant events in the history of Denmark becoming a digitalized nation, we find a pattern of what constitutes digital organizational resilience in e-government: first, there are new ways to strategize digitalization, second, there is a collaborative strategy in execution across the public sector that envelopes the ability to learn from overcoming barriers and hindrances, and third, there is an organizational resilience path that iterates action, collaboration, and learning. Digital resilience has previously been studied in the context of individual learning and cyber security. The pattern found in the historical account is a promising basis for understanding and achieving resilience in a transformative digitalization strategy in the public sector. Collapse

Abstract: We examine the impacts of mobile app category assortment of developers’ app portfolios on app performance in terms of quality and popularity. First, using data from the Apple App Store, we find a negative effect of portfolio diversity on developers’ app quality, which is negatively moderated by portfolio size. Second, we uncover spillover effects on app popularity, where existing (new) apps of a developer can influence the popularity of new (existing) apps both within and across app categories (only within the same app category). Importantly, our empirical analyses account for potential endogeneity biases using matching, selection, and simultaneous equa tions models. Collapse
