Abstract: False claims and misinformation on social media have substantially increased in the last few years. Some people have incorrectly interpreted such content as the truth, sometimes to the extent that it transforms their view of reality and subsequently leads to actions that cause harm and suffering. Despite the burgeoning body of research on misinformation on social media, we know little about the process by which social media-driven misinformation shapes and reinforces false beliefs that result in detrimental outcomes. Building on insights from dramaturgical tragedy, theories of truth, and research on social media, we develop a process theory that explains how social media-driven misinformation transforms a person's view of reality in a way that leads to detrimental human action. Abstract: Models of organizational learning typically assume that organizations rely upon performance feedback and that an exogenous (uncontrollable) environment presents the problems that organizations seek to solve. By contrast, we consider how different epistemologies within organizations, or combinations of epistemologies, and the degree to which the environment is amenable to organizational control jointly affect learning over time. This study presents three different epistemologies expressed in interpersonal learning: pragmatism (learning beliefs from better performers), coherentism (learning beliefs that fit together), and conformism (adopting beliefs that are popular). We also examine the learning implications of a dominant coalition that can promulgate its preferred beliefs throughout an organization. Outcomes from our agent-based model point toward key epistemological and environmental contingencies affecting the dynamics of organizational learning. Organizations filled with pragmatists learn effectively if the environment is fixed or controllable. Coherentists and conformists advance in knowledge only to the extent that they can control the environment. Adding pragmatists to organizations with coherentists or conformists produces a nonlinear (S-shaped) effect on knowledge achieved as different proportions of pragmatists alter social networks. Models involving learning from a dominant coalition affirm March's trade-off between learning speed and eventual knowledge achieved only for organizations filled with pragmatists and operating in an uncontrollable environment. Abstract: This paper investigates technology adoption and continued use as consumption behavior instead of through the traditional innovation/diffusion/acceptance frameworks. Building on consumer research we introduce the Theory of Consumption Values (TCV) to IS research in order to understand the underlying values and motives of technology usage. Data was collected through interviews, focus groups, and surveys from smart phone users during a six month period. We have adopted a narrative approach to analyze our empirical data and present the data as a dialogue between two smart phones. The story presented in the dialogue shows how different consumption values, including functional, epistemic, emotional, social, and conditional values, drive technology use and how they evolve over time. In the beginning, epistemic, emotional, social values drove the use. Later, functional value became the key driver. Collapse

Abstract: This article comments on the rhetoric of positivism and interpretivism in relation to information systems research. Interpretive researchers experience frustration when they attempted to publish their work. They contended that colleagues who lacked knowledge of interpretive research methods controlled most of the journals. Positivists believe that reality is separate from the individual who observes it. Abstract: Abstract. A logical foundation for information system design requires a theory of meaning. Ideational theories attach meaning to the ideas in the private world of a conscious subject. By contrast Wittgenstein held that language and meaning were primarily public and that a private, purely subjective, language was impossible. The iterative debate among stake-holders that takes place in the practice of soft systems methodology (SSM) can be understood as a Wittgensteinian language game in which meaning is created not just discovered. The conceptual models used in SSM can be developed into logico-linguistic models which express stipulative definitions. These definitions can be taken as a logical basis for information system design. Collapse
