Abstract: The Internet is embedded in all aspects of our life. Internet companies have proliferated, and their influence on shaping today’s economies, cultures, and societies has also grown. However, it is not clear how the Internet-based industry, its players, and their strategic orientations evolved. Through a longitudinal clustering analysis, this study explores the strategic orientations adopted by 103 public Internet-based businesses over the past 20 years at three different points in time (2000, 2010, and 2020). The results show that firms’ strategies changed from 2000 to 2010. From 2010 to 2020, we observed that some companies altered their strategy, while others kept a consistent strategic approach. The outcomes from these decisions are discussed to shed light on how companies (un)successfully navigated the digital transformation. These findings are also interpreted to form a basis for theory building. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations across all industries seek efficiency, digitization, and automation of their business processes in current times. Low-code development platforms (LCDPs) promise time and cost reduction through rapid and easy-to-use application assembly. Even so, many organizations struggle to understand and identify digital solutions that can advance their business processes. Therefore, we propose a conceptual framework for organizations to assess their business process management (BPM) initiative for LCDP suitability. The framework is developed through a study of literature, a focus group, and expert interviews, resulting in 18 factors to be assessed by organizations. An evaluation using fictitious use case analyses showed that the model was well-received, especially with regard to its completeness and operationality. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work studying organizational adoption of low-code for the sake of BPM initiatives. Collapse

Abstract: The ability to recombine established digital technologies is a central driver for developing innovative service solutions within service systems. However, factors that enable the application of mechanisms for recombinant digital innovation in service systems are somewhat vague, leading to unwitting recombination efforts. Based on theory from service science and digital innovation literature, we investigate which innovation capabilities are necessary to apply recombination mechanisms by using the example of service solution development in the media industry in a multiple case study. We identify specific enablers for associative and additive recombination mechanisms embedded within an organization's IT application portfolio, structure, culture, capabilities, and partnerships. We contribute to IS literature by providing insights on the prerequisites for recombinant innovation in service systems. Abstract: Robotic Process Automation (RPA) has seen significant uptake in practice over the last years due to its ability to cut costs and rapidly connect legacy applications. However, organizations struggle to apply RPA to tasks with higher complexity. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities to augment RPA promises to overcome this limitation. Nevertheless, little detail is available on how these technologies can complement each other. Drawing on the theoretical links of the Task-Technology Fit model, we propose a set of AI capabilities that fit specific RPA tasks. Based on these fits, we propose a typology of use cases that AI enable in RPA. These results are derived from a literature study, nine case studies, and 15 expert interviews and validated through a case simulation and expert evaluation. Collapse

Abstract: The emergence of digital work leads to an increasing number of teams that collaborate virtually. The physical absence of team members and other problems that occur due to the virtual context hinder the formation of team identification, which however is essential for employee’s work motivation and team effectiveness. Our study addresses the question of how companies can improve team identification in virtual teams. Combining a literature review with interviews with five case teams, we derive an overview of solutions to improve team identification and link these to problems in virtual team identification. Our results provide guidance to practitioners and we further derive propositions for future research based on identified research gaps and inconsistencies. Collapse

Abstract: To cope with the manifold challenges of digital transformation (DT), companies across all industries are rethinking, adjusting and innovating their processes, products, services, and business models. Projects play an important role in realizing these changes, thus "making DT happen". However, coordinating, aligning and prioritizing the emerging projects is a demanding challenge that can exceed an organization's current project portfolio management (PPM) structures and practices. We argue that developing solutions for the management of multiple simultaneous DT projects can be a crucial determinant for successful transformation. Until now, little is known about how companies apply PPM practices to DT projects and how they embed these practices organizationally. Therefore, we investigate how companies manage their DT project portfolios using dedicated organizational units. We offer first empirical insights into this complex topic by conducting a multiple-case study research. Our preliminary findings reveal how firms apply, adapt, and develop PPM practices to manage multiple DT projects. With our study, we aim to contribute especially to research on project interdependencies, governance and control. Furthermore, we seek to offer guidance to practitioners that face the challenge of embedding and implementing DT PPM in their organization. Collapse

Abstract: Confronted with the imperatives of an increasingly digital world, organizations are challenged to maintain the exploitation of existing revenue sources while simultaneously exploring novel paths for a digital future. One option to manage this organizational ambidexterity and to foster innovation activities within the companies is to implement digital units. However, although the introduction of digital units has increasingly become common practice for organizations, a high uncertainty about the nature of such units remains. Therefore, we develop a taxonomy to characterize digital units by building on pertinent literature in the fields of digital transformation, organizational ambidexterity, and organizational design. In combination with employing a qualitative-empirical research approach, we contribute to existing literature by offering an initial characterization of digital units and a first empirical application of our taxonomy. We also provide descriptive findings on digital units in practice and offer insights for companies that consider to implement such specific units. Collapse

Abstract: It is a common understanding that agile methods are not implemented “one-to-one” from guidelines but are tailored to the specific conditions of organizations. This perspective, however, can be extended by taking into account that agile methods also have a considerable impact on organizational features of introducing firms. Against the backdrop of current application scenarios of agile methods in practice, this paper aims to capture and explain the interplay of agile methods and organizational features as well as their respective adaptations. By utilizing adaptive structuration theory as a theoretical research lens, I employ a qualitative-empirical research approach comprising four case studies. I find that the interplay of agile methods and organizational features represents a process of mutual adaptation that constitutes the organizational change in terms of agile methods’ implementation. I further conclude that agile methods represent a vehicle to foster desired organizational change. Collapse

Abstract: Confronted with the imperatives of a digital world, firms are striving to become agile, resulting in a large-scale agile transformation as part of their organizational digital transformation. Although initial research exists, empirical literature on the process, challenges, and actions of a large-scale agile transformation is scarce. Consequently, this paper conceptualizes the agile transformation process through the lens of sociotechnical systems theory and employs a qualitative research approach comprising two in-depth case studies. As a result, a large-scale agile transformation can be interpreted as an episodic change process that comprises a sequence of multiple agile transformation phases. These phases include radical and incremental change and are delimited by barriers which are formed by emerging challenges. Such barriers are encountered by specific actions that serve scaling and coping purposes. Besides pertinent theoretical insights, the paper offers guidance for managers that direct an agile transformation in the wake of their firms’ digital transformation. Collapse
