Abstract: This study addresses two critical research gaps in human-robot interaction (HRI): the limited systematic research on the role of trust in customers’ acceptance of artificially intelligent (AI) robots; and the lack of understanding of robot acceptance under different cultural backgrounds. Drawing on the AIDUA framework, this study examines the impacts of trust and moderating effects of both national (the U.S. and China) and individual culture on customers’ intentions to use AI robots in hospitality services by developing a theoretical model. The model is tested on data collected using online data collection platforms from 491 U.S. and 495 Chinese respondents. PLSSEM and the bootstrapping method were used to test the hypothesized relationships and analyze the moderating effects of culture, respectively. The findings suggest that trust in interaction with AI robots is a significant higherorder construct that influences the intention of use. Furthermore, uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation, and power distance have been found to exhibit significant moderation effects. The results of this study extend the theoretical frameworks in HRI and provide detailed guidance to promote AI robot applications across different cultures. Collapse

Abstract: Cyberattacks can be considered one of the fundamental challenges that paralyze the progress of digital payment usage (DPU) progress among citizens, as consumers shun away from using digital banking services due to increased concern over information security. National Cybersecurity Commitment (NCSC) has emerged as a preventive cybersecurity mechanism for countries to tackle such cybersecurity threats. Previous studies have shown that a country's NCSC positively impacts the business and economy of the country. This study examines the effect of NCSC on digital payment usage (DPU) across nations by grounding our discussion on the institutional trust theory. As trusting belief in security measures is a culturally embedded characteristic, we also examine the moderating role of national culture through Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. We use multilevel models to analyze publicly available archives of repeated cross-sectional data covering 76 countries to test the proposed relationships. Our findings indicate that NCSC has a positive influence on DPU. Further, our results highlight that the relationship between NCSC and DPU in a country is contingent on cultural dimensions. Overall, the evidence suggests that a competent cybersecurity environment compatible with cultural values can influence the speedy diffusion of digital payments in a country. Implications of our findings for research and practice are also discussed. Collapse

Abstract: The theory of planned behavior (TPB) is popular in social commerce research, but existing studies have yielded inconclusive and inconsistent findings. As TPB was developed before the introduction of the Internet, Web 2.0 technologies, and social media, it is time to evaluate whether its relevance, effectiveness, novelty, and parsimony may have deteriorated due to temporal factors and the emergence of new Information Systems (IS) artifacts. In this work, an extended TPB2 is proposed by integrating social support, and MASEM analysis was conducted using a pooled correlation matrix. The findings revealed that TPB2 can better capture the nature of social commerce, as it can explain 28.4% of the variance in attitude, 59.0% of the variance in behavioral intention, and 9% of the variance in use behavior. In addition, it indicates that masculinity and uncertainty avoidance are the most significant Hofstedian cultural dimensions. The theoretical and managerial implications are also discussed along with the research agenda. Collapse

Abstract: Smartphone addiction is causing severe damage to individuals and societies alike. Previous studies have mainly focused on the effects of smartphone addiction, but they hardly focused on the cultural aspects leading to addiction. This study attempts to fill this void by shedding light on how Hofstede's four cultural dimensions, including 1) individualism-collectivism, 2) masculinity-femininity, 3) power distance, and 4) uncertainty avoidance, affect individuals' smartphone addictive behavior through the lens of attachment and coping theories. We offer suggestions for future research and practical implications based on these findings. Collapse

Abstract: While blood products are a critical resource in healthcare systems, providing sufficient blood products is a worldwide challenge, especially so since the COVID-19 pandemic. As easy and timely access to information is crucial to convince (potential) donors to change their behaviour and become regular donors, chatbots can offer fast and easy access to information whenever (potential) donors need it. Due to their human-like design, chatbots can help motivating and convincing users to donate blood regularly to work against the ongoing, post-pandemic challenges in providing sufficient blood supply. Based on previous findings, we assume that users' perception of a blood donation chatbot can vary worldwide, in relation to the incorporated design features. As part of a design science study, we conducted an online between-subject experiment with participants from USA, Germany, South Africa and India. We could show a significant negative moderating effect of horizontal individualism in terms of the chatbot's individualistic conversation style and the perceived similarity in social group membership, implicating the so-called "contribution conflict" with regard to IS and culture. Abstract: Mobile platforms provide important entrepreneurial opportunities by facilitating access to a global market composed of more than a hundred countries. These opportunities are crucial for mobile app startups as they seek to reach a wider audience and accelerate growth. Nevertheless, performing in foreign countries is challenging as mobile app startups face a "foreignness liability" since they are competing against complementors (i.e., app developers) who have experience in their domestic market. We offer a research model that assesses the impact of cultural distance on the app-level performance of mobile app startups in foreign countries. We hypothesize the moderating effects of investor-consumer cultural distance and environmental characteristics within foreign countries. We test the model using a dataset of over 550 mobile app startups operating on the iOS platform. Our findings support our hypotheses and provide insights into whether mobile platforms are level playing fields. Our study sheds light on the interactions between a startup and its investors' cultural distances highlighting configurations of cultural distance that are beneficial for app performance in foreign countries when the environment is stable or uncertain. Abstract: In this paper, we explore the spillover effect of customer firms' data breaches on their upstream supplier firms' cost management strategies, proxied by cost stickiness. Our primary analyses suggest that data breaches suffered by customer firms are associated with a decrease in cost stickiness among supplier firms. Furthermore, the reductions in supplier cost stickiness are stronger if suppliers are managed by CEOs from national cultural groups with high uncertainty avoidance, low long-term orientations, and/or low individualism. In sum, the findings contribute to both Information Systems (IS) and Operations Management (OM) disciplines in terms of data breach, cost management strategy, and the role of national culture in OM. In particular, the findings can facilitate the management and regulation of data breaches for managers and regulators. Collapse

Abstract: Business Process Management (BPM) is an important discipline for organizations to manage their processes. Research shows that higher BPM-maturity leads to better process performance. However, contextual factors such as culture seem to influence this relationship. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of national culture on the relationship between BPM-maturity and process performance. A structural equation modeling with partial least squares estimations is performed based on data from six different countries within Europe. Although the results show a significant relationship between BPM-maturity and process performance, no significant moderation effect of national culture has been found. Through a post-hoc moderation analysis on each dimension of BPM-maturity, we further find four significant moderation effects. These results provide insights into the role of culture in relation to BPM-maturity. Collapse

Abstract: The acquisition of personal information has been generally accepted in the pandemic situation as an effective measure to prevent infection, while at the same time raising concerns regarding the infringement of personal privacy. The current study aimed to propose and empirically test a research model for restaurant customers on the disclosure of personal information in a pandemic situation. Privacy calculus theory and institutional theory were applied to theoretically explain the drivers/inhibitors and behavioral responses that affect disclosure of personal information. We verified that the most influential factor on intention to disclose was “perceived benefit”, followed by “government pressure” as another strong predictor. We present theoretical and practical implications for restaurant managers and policy agencies. Collapse
