Abstract: Data literacy skills are extremely important, yet it is still lacking in many Indigenous communities across Canada due to systemic barriers faced by Indigenous peoples. Hackathons have been used as a common approach to promote data literacy. However, hackathons are socio-technical innovation processes in which local cultures and values play a role in their conduct and outcomes. Hackathons that are designed with Indigenous cultures and values in mind can be more effective at promoting data literacy for Indigenous peoples, yet there is limited guidance on how to do so. In this paper, we adopt the Action Design Research approach and Indigenous research methods to collaboratively develop and deliver culturally appropriate hackathons to increase data literacy within Indigenous communities. During this process we will also co-develop a suite of design principles to guide the design of these hackathons. Collapse

Abstract: In a constantly evolving digital sphere, surmounting organizational boundaries and sharing data offers the opportunity to realize a multitude of mutual benefits, such as advanced analytics and innovative services. Organizations aspire to share data. However, they struggle to identify and establish beneficial conditions for data sharing, and research still offers little support to exploit the potential of data sharing. We apply an exploratory research approach to develop a framework of beneficial conditions for data sharing. By combining ten expert interviews and a systematic literature review, we aggregate 23 characteristics that constitute beneficial conditions into eight categories and apply and validate the framework in a real-world case. Thus, we contribute to research by providing a fundamental understanding of beneficial conditions for data sharing and a compact target picture. Additionally, we enable practitioners to systematically assess an organization's current condition to set the course toward exploiting the full potential of data sharing. Collapse

Abstract: With the ongoing digitalization of human society, regular employees (e.g., noninformation technology experts) become increasingly autonomous and proactive in using organizational data and information technologies to facilitate data-driven actions and insights. This growing autonomy of regular employees (dubbed here, empowered users) in using information technologies creates new challenges. As most empowered users lack sophisticated information technology skills, they struggle to find and access relevant data, understand their meaning, and extract and adapt them to meet their needs. We propose a powerful way to support empowered users with a combination of conceptual models and narratives. A data narrative is a descriptive and textual representation of one or more aspects of data in a domain that is organized and presented as a connected sequence of sentences in a natural language. We assess the efficacy of narrative representations for conceptual modeling cardinality constraints, which are an essential part of understanding data. We conducted two laboratory experiments and found a positive and strong effect for narratives: cardinality constraints that were described in the narratives were better understood than constraints only represented in the model (i.e., script). This effect was robust across cardinalities, measures, script complexities, and familiarity levels with the conceptual modeling grammar. Abstract: Data is increasingly seen as a source of value for organizations, requiring employees' skills to collect, transform, and use to improve decision-making. The sum of these skills is named data literacy. This paper aims to develop a tool to assess the data literacy of individuals in the business workforce. Using a design science research approach, we developed a data literacy assessment tool based on 18 core competencies across three skill levels. We tested this survey tool with 243 respondents in a large North American financial company. Our artifact provided an accurate assessment of intra-and inter-individual competencies and the identification of typical profiles required following the employees' role as data consumers or producers. This study is the first to propose a complete definition of the data literacy construct with a validated data literacy competencies assessment tool adapted to the business workforce. Collapse

Abstract: This study advances the IS literature by investigating the effects of visualization on promoting sustainability knowledge and pro-environmental behaviors. Specifically, drawing on the visualization literature, we explain how the key visualization features, expectancy illustration, and interactivity affect individuals' understanding of the impact of their behaviors on the environment, encouraging pro-environmental behaviors. Additionally, we draw on the pedagogy literature to explicate that the effects of visualization on learning outcomes and pro-environmental practices can be explained through individuals' psychological responses in their course of interpreting the visualization. Collectively, this study presents our endeavor in understanding the roles of visualization in ecological discourse by integrating the visualization literature and sustainability research. Moreover, by unboxing individuals' psychological processes in interpreting visualization, we offer a fresh perspective to understanding the promises and challenges of using visualization for knowledge acquisition. Abstract: Firms face increasing pressure to refine business values and succeed in digital transformation. It is essential for organizations to have the required competence and capabilities to make innovation happen. This study argues that digital transformation teams should build the right competence profiles to deliver the changes using digital tools. Based on the dynamic capability theory, this paper proposes that the team's digital problem-solving capability and benefits management capability are essential for digital transformation success. Using process automation as a context, this paper suggests that digital transformation teams should build data literacy, business process management competence, and computational thinking to form their capabilities for digital transformation, leading to process automation outcomes. Abstract: In developing countries such as Haiti, which are marked by high unemployment and gender inequality, online education has the potential to change lives. Returns on education are particularly high in Information Communications Technology (ICT)-intensive jobs and IT outsourcing offers opportunities for remote employment, providing alternatives for economic diversification and job creation that are particularly relevant for youth and women. However, the problem faced by many developing countries, is that traditional models, frameworks, architectures, and platforms for online learning do not lend themselves well to their context and, therefore, it is important to develop context-specific platforms. This need for suitable platforms has motivated the research question that this paper seeks to address, that is: What is the appropriate architecture that supports learning strategies for delivering scalable digital skills training in a resource-constrained environment? We propose an architecture that was developed specifically for blended learning in resource-constrained environments and describe how a prototype for this was designed, built, and deployed in Haiti. The initial responses to the application of the architecture, including the testimonials of the participants and the interest expressed by other countries of the region in adopting the proposed architecture, have been extremely positive. Abstract: In the context of digital transformation, having a data-driven organizational culture has been recognized as an important factor for data analytics capabilities, innovativeness and competitive advantage of firms. However, the current literature on data-driven culture (DDC) is fragmented, lacking both a synthesis of findings and a theoretical foundation. Therefore, the aim of this work has been to develop a comprehensive framework for understanding DDC and the mechanisms that can be used to embed such a culture in organizations as well as structuring prior dispersed findings on the topic. Based on the foundation of organizational culture theory, we employed a Design Science Research (DSR) approach using a systematic literature review and expert interviews to build and evaluate a transformation-oriented framework. This research contributes to knowledge by synthesizing previously dispersed knowledge in a holistic framework, as well as, by providing a conceptual framework to guide the transformation towards a DDC.
