Abstract: Informed by theoretical perspectives on working memory demands and devices' potential to "prime" different types of cognitive processing, this paper investigates whether we tend to think "faster" and more intuitively, with less reflection when we use a smartphone instead of a personal computer (PC) or notebook. Three complementary experimental studies with a total of 823 participants reveal that the results of using such devices surface only when participants can select the smartphone as their preferred device. Controlling for potential confounding variables reveals no evidence of general differences between devices. Our findings caution against overemphasizing the importance of the type of device in thinking slow or fast and establish self-selection bias as an important factor in explaining such differences. This study contributes to clarifying the psychology of smartphone screens and how humans make choices when they are using these devices. Collapse

Abstract: Building the Internet of Behaviors (IOB) obviously requires capturing human behavior. Sensor input from eye tracking has been widely used for profiling in market research, adaptive user interfaces, and other smart systems, but requires dedicated hardware. The wide spread of webcams in consumer devices like phones, tablets, notebooks, and smart TVs has fostered eye tracking with commodity cameras. In this paper, we present a systematic review across the IEEE and ACM databases -- complemented by snowballing and input from eye tracking experts at CHI 2021 -- to list and characterize publicly available webcam eye trackers that estimate the point-of-regard on devices with no additional hardware. Information from articles was supplemented by searching author websites and code repositories, and contacting authors. 16 eye trackers were found that can be used. The restrictions regarding license terms and technical performance are presented, enabling developers to choose an appropriate software for their IoB application. Collapse

Abstract: Although active participation of members is a critical success factor for virtual communities, few members actively participate in activities in virtual communities (e.g., posting, commenting, sharing, etc.). This study explores the differences between passive and active community participation from community cohesiveness and community attachment perspectives. Drawing upon a context-specific cohesiveness-attachment-participation framework based on cognition-affection-conation traits of human psychology, we propose a research model and empirically test the roles of community cohesiveness and attachment in virtual community participation. The results suggest that community members’ active participation is positively influenced by both community cohesiveness and community attachment. Visitation, as the passive mode of participation, is influenced by community attachment only. The findings not only inspire future IS research to consider community cohesiveness, attachment, and participation as vital research constructs in other social contexts, but it also helps managers build managerial actions, such as prioritising their limited business resources to increase community members’ active participation, for the success of virtual communities. Abstract: As an emerging technological means to influence user, digital nudging is being used by more and more custom manufacturers. This research explores the influence of digital nudging design in online customization system on user satisfaction. I propose that for novices, the adoption of digital nudging can reduce the design effort and increase their satisfaction; for experts, the adoption of digital nudging will reduce users' feeling of accomplishment and reduce satisfaction. In addition, the influence of overt digital nudging (ODN) is stronger than that of covert digital nudging (CDN). We designed 3 experiments to investigate them. This research can extend the understanding of the study on user customization satisfaction and the effect of digital nudging and provide guidance for manufacturers to optimize the design of customization systems. Abstract: Although social media has helped online newspapers by allowing users to organically share articles, some have argued that it has cannibalized and hurt newspapers through reduced readership and diminished agenda-setting power. Motivated by these two opposing effects, it is critical to understand what affects the duality between sharing news articles on social media and reading the articles on news websites. Using rich clickstream data on online news readership obtained from an English-language newspaper in an Asian country and social media data collected from Twitter, we focus on article sentiment as a key news content attribute and find a differential effect of sentiment on readership and sharing behaviors across the news site and third-party social media platform. Our results show that people are likely to read news articles with negative sentiment on the news site, but they tend to share articles with positive sentiment on Twitter. Specifically, a one-unit increase in content sentiment is associated with a 10.86% or 273-unit decrease in news site page views but a 17.0% or 2.10-unit increase in Twitter sharing volume. Upon decomposition of news article sentiment, we also find a contrasting positive author sentiment effect and a negative news topic valence effect on news readership. To uncover the underlying mechanism of the findings, we test the key intuitions from prior self-presentation literature. We find that an increase in a Twitter user’s followers (i.e., audience size) leads to an increase in the Twitter user’s propensity to share positive-sentiment news articles. Our findings on the role of sentiment on content consumption and sharing affirm the coopetitive but complementary relationship between news websites and social media platforms. Abstract: Many workplaces have replaced annual reviews with ongoing performance evaluations, often through the integration and use of real-time feedback applications. These applications allow users to provide feedback through different device mediums. However, organizational leaders are not primarily concerned with convenience: Feedback structure and quality are paramount to the application's effectiveness, and the distinct technological affordances of mobile and desktop devices may yield different feedback comments. This study uniquely investigates the impact of device medium (desktop vs. mobile) usage on textual feedback according to four helpfulness indicators: comment length, subjectivity, specificity, and valence. Analyzing two years of proprietary data obtained through an enterprise real-time feedback application via regression analysis, we interestingly find that the device medium impacts the four distinct helpfulness indicators differently. Our study underscores the impact of device type on evaluation outcomes and derived managerial insights will help organizational leaders looking to optimize real-time feedback app usage. Collapse

Abstract: With the advent of virtual reality (VR), immersive learning environments are considered as viable elearning environments. Yet, there is still no clarity on the long-term success with VR when learning. We examine the short-term and long-term learning outcomes between an illustrated text, 2D video, and VR. This is achieved through an experiment in which the effects of the three technologies on learning outcomes were measured immediately and 14 days after the learning phase. In the short-term, VR had a larger effect on subjectively and objectively measured knowledge gain as well as on motivation than the two other learning environments. In the long-term, VR did outperform the 2D video material on the desktop only when measured objectively. Our results imply that VR can transfer knowledge to the long-term better than other learning environments but more effort needs to be made to make the learning success more obvious on a subjective level.We draw our arguments for the effect of VR on learning outcome mainly from Multimedia Learning Theory (Mayer and Moreno, 1998). Abstract: Companies increasingly invest in digital marketing channels to promote their products and services. While the expenditures for each marketing channel are known, the contribution of marketing channels to a successful conversion, and therefore the value they generate, is unknown, but highly relevant for strategic decision-making. In this paper, we develop a novel, context-aware additive hazard marketing attribution (CAHMA) model based on survival analysis to address this problem. In addition to channel-specific, time-decaying effects of marketing on the users' conversion rate, we control for the effects of contextual features, such as the device or country from which users interact with marketing channels. Based on a prototypical implementation, we demonstrate the model's applicability and evaluate it on real-world data from the industry. We find that CAHMA outperforms other models in terms of accuracy while offering unique interpretability of the results and hence, providing deep insights for practitioners into the effects of marketing. Abstract: Government branding is a practice that can be tied to promoting an institution (long-term orientation) or a particular administration and its elected official (short-term orientation), using both physical and digital artifacts. Reviewing the related work in the literature, we document the existence and visibility of an administration-dependent government brand in a developing country by mining social media data and the Google 2019 Spanish corpus. We test the hypothesis that administration-dependent government iconography (e.g. a logo) can lead to a change in the perceived credibility of public information in digital environments. Using an experimental survey approach that parallels the application of framing, we find that short term orientated government iconography can be detrimental to the credibility of government institutions, while they can also be seen as social opportunity costs, as budgets invested in them can be capitalized in later elections and not in the mission of the temporarily branded government body. Abstract: The technology lifecycle model is extensively used to study technology evolution and innovation. However, this model was developed for industrial-age material technologies and does not address digital technologies with nonmaterial elements. Therefore, a question emerges as to whether the level of technological materiality is implicated in different dynamics of innovation, as reflected in the technology lifecycle. Digital technologies evolve through discourse that involves interactions among multiple stakeholders that shape the evolutionary trajectory of the technology. Therefore, we set out to examine whether discourse about digital technologies that vary in their level of materiality manifests in different ways throughout these technologies' lifecycles. To do so, we conducted a study comparing the discourse around 10 digital technologies-five highly material and five highly nonmaterial-at different stages of their technology lifecycles. We identified three characteristics of discoursevolume, volatility, and diversity-and examined them for the 10 digital technologies by analyzing their corresponding Wikipedia articles. Our findings show that the discourse around technologies with different levels of materiality is similar in the initial era of the lifecycle but diverges in the two subsequent eras. In addition, we found that the discourse around highly nonmaterial technologies remains elevated for longer time periods, compared to highly material technologies. Based on these results, we put forth propositions that challenge and extend existing research on the relationships between the technological level of materiality, discourse, and trajectories of technology evolution.
