Abstract: Digital transformation (DT) is a complex and dynamic phenomenon that requires a significant shift in organizational culture and mindset, necessitating new theoretical perspectives to understand the interactions between technology and people. This article conducts a critical literature review of the extant literature on DT, contrasting traditional Information Systems (IS) theories with assemblage theory. Assemblage theory provides a dynamic framework to analyze the various components of DT and their interactions, acknowledging the significance of power dynamics and politics in shaping the direction and outcomes of DT initiatives. This paper provides different theoretical perspectives in digital transformation literature by analyzing 70 articles published in premier IS journals. This article is helpful for scholars and practitioners interested in understanding the complexities of DT through assemblage theory perspectives. Collapse

Abstract: The use of mobile payment (m-payment) is growing exponentially in developing countries. A small number of investigations have been undertaken on what makes people continue to use m-payment in an African context. We combine the task technology fit (TTF) model, expectation-confirmation model (ECM), and trust dimension to explain the influence of continuance use of m-payment. We collected 384 valid questionnaire responses from Mozambique. The results show that the relevant constructs to explain continuance intention are use, individual performance, overall trust, and the moderation role of satisfaction. Collapse

Abstract: Misinformation on social media has become a horrendous problem in our society. Fact-checks on information often fall behind the diffusion of misinformation, which can lead to negative impacts on society. This research studies how different factors may affect the spread of fact-checks over the internet. We collected a dataset of fact-checks in a six-month period and analyzed how they spread on Twitter. The spread of fact-checks is measured by the total retweet count. The factors/variables include the truthfulness rating, topic of information, source credibility, etc. The research identifies truthfulness rating as a significant factor: conclusive fact-checks (either true or false) tend to be shared more than others. In addition, the source credibility, political leaning, and the sharing count also affect the spread of fact-checks. The findings of this research provide practical insights into accelerating the spread of the truth in the battle against misinformation online. Collapse

Abstract: The dissemination of fake news intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, in this paper we propose a process-based model grounded on the diffusion of innovations theory to investigate how fake news was shared via social media. Accordingly, data was categorized according to the taxonomy of process, namely: input, output, players and activities. We found that individual decision-making traits, fake news perceived features and communication channel attributes are determinants of a personal attitude vis-à-vis a received fake news. The attitude then leads to the decision of whether or not to believe in the fake news, while confirmation conveys to the spread of same. In this way, social media, mediated by the power of algorithms and echo chambers, increase the chance of spreading misinformation. Collapse

Abstract: Intelligent process automation is a technological innovation that combines symbolic automation tools with machine learning. Intelligent process automation can automate complex tasks that otherwise have to be performed by humans when symbolic automation is not powerful enough. Regardless of the high economic potential for companies, the adoption rate in practice is comparatively low. This could be due to the adoption behavior of the employees. In our work, we iteratively develop a Unified Theory of Acceptance and use of Technology (UTAUT) model for the adoption of intelligent process automation and evaluate it with an empirical study. With our research we want to empower designers to adapt the corresponding tools in the future to increase adoption. The study shows that, in addition to established factors for technology adoption, trust, transparency, and attitude towards technology are primary decision factors. Collapse

Abstract: This study explores how to design an information system that facilitates the resilience of supply chains and the collaboration of different stakeholders during various crises. The ultimate objective of this study is to develop a knowledge base for formalizing design principles essential for designing and conceptualizing the Community Collaboration Support System to facilitate the resilience of supply chains during a crisis. To derive the design principles, we followed the design science research approach. Drawing from the literature, this paper used kernel theories as a part of the process. The design principles are well positioned and aligned with the acquired knowledge base. This study contributes to the existing research in distributed and collaboration technology. Abstract: In this paper, we focus on the early-stage diffusion of codependent IT innovations, which are a type of innovation in which the overall innovation consists of two complementary parts that are adopted by two different adopter communities but where both parts need to be jointly adopted by the two coadopter communities for successful diffusion of the overall innovation. Using innovation diffusion, organizing vision (OV), and institutional entrepreneurship theories as the key theoretical lenses, and an in-depth case study reconstructed using 20 years of discourse surrounding Walmart’s campaign in the early stage of diffusion of the RFID-in-retailing technology, we develop a fourphase process model for the early-stage diffusion of codependent IT innovations. We make three specific contributions to the IS discipline, specifically to the literature on IS innovation adoption and diffusion. First, we add the notion of coadopter relative advantage and posit that the organization in the coadopter community with a higher coadopter relative advantage that perceives the highest degree of coadopter relative advantage will emerge as an institutional entrepreneur (IE) and will influence the early-stage diffusion of the codependent IT innovation. Second, we add the notion of an internal-external influencer and posit that the IE may be an actor who is internal to the overall adoption phenomenon, which involves two different coadopter communities, but external to the coadopter community with a lower coadopter relative advantage that adopts the innovation component. Third, we divide the early-stage diffusion process into four phases—emergence, structuralization, evolution, and chasm—and identify the institutional entrepreneurship strategies used and the OV functions enacted by the IE during each phase. We propose that the IE for a codependent innovation will: (1) use the rationale development strategy and enact the interpretation OV function during the emergence phase, (2) use the resource mobilization strategy and enact the mobilization OV function during the structuralization phase, (3) use the relationship development strategy and enact the legitimation OV function during the evolution phase, and (4) use all the three institutional entrepreneurship strategies and enact all the three OV functions during the chasm phase. Abstract: Small business revenues worldwide were drastically affected by lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, many small businesses introduced new functionality through the adoption of digital technologies. However, little is known about the nature of these digital technology innovations, including whether they differed across industry sectors. Through a modified case study approach, we examine digital technology responses to the pandemic by small businesses that were identified in Google News. We introduce a new framework designed to describe the nature of the responses. Most small businesses that were examined introduced digital responses by offering new e-commerce facilities and/or converting their existing services to ‘e-services’, with some important cross sector exceptions. Practical suggestions for small businesses are provided. Collapse

Abstract: Manufacturing firms have increasingly relied on inter-organizational systems (IOS) to facilitate inter-firm transactions and integration with suppliers. However, they frequently face various impediments, such as adversarial behaviours and misalignments, when trying to integrate with IOS (i.e., IOS integration or IT/IS integration). Based on the perspectives of mutual adaptation of technology and organization and socio-technical systems, this study develops two compromise constructs critical for IOS integration: inter-firm process compromise and technology compromise. These two compromise constructs, treated as neutral alignment, are proposed to affect the achievement of higher IOS integration. Based on 146 matched-pair samples, the findings demonstrate the importance of technology and inter-firm process compromises in achieving greater IOS integration, which, in turn, enables higher inter-firm dependence and operational performance. This research provides theoretical and practical implications that contribute to our understanding of the role of compromise in facilitating IOS integration. The implications should serve as an important basis for future research in examining IOS integration. Collapse

Abstract: This study examines how the timing of the adoption of e-commerce capabilities affects the performance of online retailers. By applying a resource-based view and innovation diffusion theory, we examine capability adoption by the top 500 US online retailers over seven years period. We present how e-commerce capabilities differentially contribute to performance outcomes. Capabilities vary in the durability of benefit, with some providing earlier adopter benefits and others showing benefits later in their life cycles. We find that some capabilities reward later adopters, contrary to prior research. These results support that adoption timing is key to the understanding of the contribution of e-commerce capabilities to online retailer performance. Collapse
