Abstract: Initially designed to protect intellectual property (IP) of digitalized information goods such as music, games, or books, existing centralized digital rights management (DRM) systems mostly serve the interests of major publishers, with scant inclusion of rights owners, creators, and consumers. Although various blockchain-based DRM systems have been proposed, most of them mirror existing counterproductive IP restrictions. Analyzing the music industry as a case in point, this paper proposes design principles for blockchain-based DRM systems that provide an integrated and flexible solution by enabling transparent music licensing structures, consistent and complete rights metadata, and efficient and transparent royalty payout. The solution can be achieved by storing rights metadata on a public distributed ledger, by validating metadata through a consensus mechanism on a permissioned blockchain, and by algorithmically enforcing royalty payout via stablecoin through a smart contract. The design principles were evaluated by industry experts, validating their benefit for the music industry by increasing surplus value that is currently destroyed through previous suboptimal designs. Abstract: Some have argued that online intermediaries facilitate sales of counterfeit and fake products. This study investigates the association between anti-counterfeit efforts and the revenue models implemented by intermediaries. We build a stylized analytical model to investigate the conditions under which either the advertising model or the brokerage model would lead to a higher anti-counterfeit effort. We find the intensity of market competition plays a critical role in the intermediary’s decisions on anti-counterfeit effort. Specifically, when market competition is less intense, we show that the intermediary has a greater economic incentive to combat counterfeit selling in the brokerage model than in the advertising model. We supplement empirical support to the results. In particular, using a composite score, we find the intermediary that adopts the advertising model tends to have a lower composite score than one using the brokerage model. Our results suggest the focusing on anti-counterfeit measures is more a means rather than an ends in combating counterfeit sales and the policymakers should pay more attention to the impacts from the adopted revenue model. Abstract: The benchmarking of information security policies has two challenges. Organizations are reluctant to share data regarding information security and no two organizations are identical. In this paper, we attempt to propose an artifact for a benchmarking method of information security policy, which can resolve the above challenges. We employ design science methodology, activity theory and international standards to design the artifact as a proof of concept. The artifact facilitates the implementation of efficient information security policies. Organizations can utilize the artifact to analyze and benchmark information security policies. Abstract: Nowadays, enterprises employ information security system to protect organizational assets, then enforce employee to follow system workflow (i.e., information security policies). Although companies control employee by predefined workflow, employees tend to circumvent the workflow when the workflow is impeded and being inflexibility. Thus, the goal of this study is to delineate the new concept of system workflow, which is the method of increasing system workflow flexibility. We propose the notion of empowered system workflow through in the specific context of the enterprise digital rights management system (ERM). The ERM as an example of an information security system plays a role in persistently protecting information assets. This study examined the differences between the proposed notion of ERM system and the conventional ERM system through three aspects (psychological ownership, perceived benefit, and awareness of audit). Abstract: This essay discusses the use of big data analytics (BDA) as a strategy of enquiry for advancing information systems (IS) research. In broad terms, we understand BDA as the statistical modelling of large, diverse, and dynamic data sets of user-generated content and digital traces. BDA, as a new paradigm for utilising big data sources and advanced analytics, has already found its way into some social science disciplines. Sociology and economics are two examples that have successfully harnessed BDA for scientific enquiry. Often, BDA draws on methodologies and tools that are unfamiliar for some IS researchers (e.g., predictive modelling, natural language processing). Following the phases of a typical research process, this article is set out to dissect BDA’s challenges and promises for IS research, and illustrates them by means of an exemplary study about predicting the helpfulness of 1.3 million online customer reviews. In order to assist IS researchers in planning, executing, and interpreting their own studies, and evaluating the studies of others, we propose an initial set of guidelines for conducting rigorous BDA studies in IS. Abstract: a b s t r a c tDespite the critical role of individuals' perceived security in an online environment, previous research has not attempted to comprehensively study the influences and interrelations between the determinants of online individuals' perceived security. This research employs five theories to examine the interrelations that might exist between the antecedents of individuals' perceived security in online environment in Malaysia. It is the first attempt to empirically examine the interrelations of the confidentiality related factors identified in the literature which is a significant original contribution. A questionnaire was the primary research methodology and structural equation modeling was employed to test the hypotheses. The findings suggest that individuals' perceptions about security are significantly influenced by their perceived technical protection while technical protection was found to be influenced by website design features. Moreover, it was found that individuals' perceptions toward internally provided assurances are highly influenced by externally provided assurances. However, the results found no significant relations between internally and externally provided assurances about a website's security. The findings imply that e-retailers should launch well-designed websites and communicate the technical protection capabilities of their websites to address individuals' security concerns. The results also suggest that e-traders should consider the factors influencing individuals' security perceptions when designing/developing their websites. Therefore, individuals' perceptions of the security features of a website play a critical role in their online behavior and purchase decision making process. Considering the critical role of factors such as customer satisfaction and loyalty in the financial performance of organizations (Ahmed et al., 2010), online security is a critical factor for online retailers.Although the antecedents of online security have been studied by the scholars in the field of computer science and engineering, their approach is from the technical and engineering perspective and not from the social science and Management, which refer to security from the subjective perspective. Abstract: As information technology becomes integral to the products and services in a growing range of industries, there has been a corresponding surge of interest in understanding how firms can effectively formulate and execute digital business strategies. This fusion of IT within the business environment gives rise to a strategic tension between investing in digital artifacts for long-term value creation and exploiting them for short-term value appropriation. Further, relentless innovation and competitive pressures dictate that firms continually adapt these artifacts to changing market and technological conditions, but sustained profitability requires scalable architectures that can serve a large customer base and stable interfaces that support integration across a diverse ecosystem of complementary offerings. The study of digital business strategy needs new concepts and methods to examine how these forces are managed in pursuit of competitive advantage. We conceptualize the logic of digital business strategy in terms of two constructs: design capital (i.e., the cumulative stock of designs owned or controlled by a firm) and design moves (i.e., the discrete strategic actions that enlarge, reduce, or modify a firm's stock of designs). We also identify two salient dimensions of design capital, namely, option value and technical debt. Using embedded case studies of four firms, we develop a rich conceptual model and testable propositions to lay out a design-based logic of digital business strategy. This logic highlights the interplay between design moves and design capital in the context of digital business strategy and contributes to a growing body of insights that link the design of digital artifacts to competitive strategy and firm-level performance. Abstract: In the last decade the music industry has been developing different Internet based music services. Lately personalization via recommendation is gaining popularity. In this paper we investigate the adoption of personalized music services by a combined quantitative and qualitative research approach. We first deploy an adoption study by the use of an adapted TAM survey. Our quantitative findings confirm perceived enjoyment as influential factor for intention to use, higher than perceived usefulness. Instead of broadening the quantitative study to a wider group of users we investigate deeper with qualitative interviews based on diffusion of innovation and different adoption models. Firstly three hypotheses are formulated on basis of the survey. Secondly our qualitative results give a richer explanation and show our group of respondents value the quality of the music recommendation mechanism over extra other functionalities like social networking, blogging and scrobbling. The latter result is important for music service suppliers in their highly competitive market. Collapse

Abstract: Semantic Web technology is able to provide the required computational semantics for interoperability of learning resources across different Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Learning Object Repositories (LOR). The EU research project LUISA (Learning Content Management System Using Innovative Semantic Web Services Architecture) addresses the development of a reference semantic architecture for the major challenges in the search, interchange, and delivery of learning objects in a service-oriented context. One of the key issues, highlighted in this paper, is Digital Rights Management (DRM) interoperability. A Semantic Web approach to copyright management has been followed, which places a Copyright Ontology as the key component for interoperability among existing DRM systems and other licensing schemes like Creative Commons. Moreover, Semantic Web tools like reasoners, rule engines and semantic queries facilitate the implementation of an interoperable copyright management component in the LUISA architecture. Collapse
