Abstract: Despite anti-phishing filters, social engineering-based cyber-attacks still result in billions of dollars lost annually, significant personal identity theft, loss of corporate secrets, and espionage. We review the phishing literature on psychological attacks and design tactics employed for deception by attackers. The result reveals the need to continuously identify tactics embedded in fraudulent email content to understand why users still fall prey to phishing attacks. Using the literature as a backdrop, we identify and conceptualize a thematic dimensional framework of fraudulent phishing attacks. This study uses benchmark datasets of fraudulent email to empirically validate the proposed dimensional framework. Specifically, a combination of machine learning-based content analysis and topic modeling found a majority of the discovered topics were labeled against the proposed di­ mensions. Statistical analysis was employed to provide empirical evidence of the thematic dimensions of fraudulent email attacks. This study thus, not only extends the cybersecurity literature by identifying and vali­ dating eight dimensions that enrich our understanding of phishing and attack identification but stimulates cu­ mulative research endeavors to develop yet more comprehensive dimensional frameworks of phishing email attacks. Abstract: Artificial Intelligence and Computer Agents are having a substantial impact on our everyday lives. The current paper focuses on the prospects of humans negotiating with computer agents in e-commerce settings. We conducted experiments where the subjects negotiated the purchase of mobile plans with computer agents acting as sellers. Three time-based negotiation tactics and two search mechanisms were employed in synchronous vs. asynchronous sessions. The results suggest that computer agents’ negotiation tactics and search mechanisms have significant effects on both the subjective and objective outcomes of the negotiations, while timespan has marginal effects on the agreement rate of the negotiation. Abstract: Data analytics (DA) is a growing technique to generate knowledge of and to raise responsiveness to marketplace, yet relatively few studies clarified its framework and to examine its effects on marketing actions. This study builds a DA framework based on sense-and-respond perspective and practices and accordingly examines their impact on marketing agility and the mediating effects of market knowledge specificity. We conduct in-depth interviews and surveys to measure the new framework. Results from 198 observations confirm the new frame­ work and indicate that the DA constructs have positive but different effects on marketing agility and the mediation of market knowledge specificity. Abstract: Cost estimation methods are crucial to support inter- and intraorganizational cost management. Despite intense research on machine learning and deep learning for the prediction of costs, the acceptance of such models in practice remains unclear. The aim of this study is to evaluate the acceptance of an implemented deep learning-based cost estimation system. In an empirical study at a large Bavarian automotive manufacturer we use surveys to collect opinions and concerns from experts who regularly use the system. The evaluation is framed by the basic theories of the Technology Acceptance Model. The results from 50 questionnaires and qualitative participant observations show further development potentials of intelligent cost estimation systems in terms of perceived usefulness and userfriendliness. Building on our empirical findings we provide implications for both research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: Public administration institutions increasingly use business process management (BPM) to innovate internal operations, increase process performance and improve their services. Research on private sector companies has shown that organizational culture may impact an organization's BPM and this culture is often referred to as BPM culture. However, similar research on public administration is yet missing. Thus, this article assesses BPM culture in Germany’s municipal administration. 733 online survey responses were gathered and analyzed using MANOVA and follow-up discriminant analyses to identify possible determinants of public administration’s BPM culture. The results indicate that the employees’ professional experience and their responsibility influence the assessment of BPM culture, as does the size of a municipality. Based on these findings, the article proposes testable relationships and an agenda for further research on BPM culture in public administration. Collapse

Abstract: The authors of this research investigate the effects of hedonic and utilitarian message appeals in firm-generated content on product performance measured by daily sales. The results from a multiproduct category, large-scale empirical study with data collected from a variety of sources show that hedonic appeals have a higher positive impact than utilitarian appeals on product performance. The authors also illustrate that message appeals have positive effects on product performance only when message quality and message goal consistency surpass a certain threshold and that these positive effects are stronger for hedonic than for utilitarian appeals. The authors further demonstrate that message complexity negatively moderates the effects of hedonic and utilitarian appeals on product performance with a stronger negative moderating effect for hedonic appeals. The research provides guidance on the proper combination of message styles and suggests that firms’ creative capabilities to curate online messages that resonate with consumers can produce significant performance advantages. Abstract: Organizational information security (ISec) threats have exploded with advances in globalization and technology. Thus, organizations are scrambling to find both technical and behavioral approaches to shore up security. Whereas security technologies are crucial to these efforts, they are often rendered useless by employees’ misunderstanding, carelessness, or deliberate disregard of ISec polices (ISPs). Accordingly, organizations are increasingly seeking ways to encourage employees to work as security allies. A key approach in many organizations is encouraging employees to better understand and comply with ISPs. Consequently, ISec research has leveraged several theories to identify the underlying reasons for ISP compliance behaviors among employees. However, most of this research focuses unilaterally on compliance without simultaneously considering noncompliance, as if noncompliance were caused by opposite factors. A pressing need thus exists for a theoretical foundation that can consider both common outcomes and whether there is an explainable tipping point that can explain when a normally compliant employee chooses to become noncompliant, and vice versa. In this study, we contextualize the extended parallel process model (EPPM) to ISP compliance by accounting for dual outcomes of compliance/noncompliance and dual roles of coping—problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping. We further extend the EPPM to include response costs and maladaptive rewards to predict the two possible outcomes. Additionally, we employ a weighted discriminant value measurement approach to examine the tipping point between compliance and noncompliance. To test our resulting theoretical model and new measure, we conducted two separate empirical studies with 816 employees, using survey and scenario methodologies. The empirical results from these studies indicate that our contextualization and extension of EPPM better explain the gaps than alternative theories in the ISP literature. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we examine chief information officers' (CIO) perceptual profiles relative to other top management team (TMT) members. CIOs' profile reveals that decision makers perceive them as less authoritative and less socially adept, important traits for strategic leadership. Decision makers also perceive them to have less in common with successful business leaders than either chief finance officers (CFOs) or chief marketing officers (CMOs). These findings highlight important differences in the way that decision makers perceive CIOs relative to their top management team colleagues and shed light on a possible reason for some challenges that CIOs frequently face in organizations.
