Abstract: Multistores are data management systems that enable query processing across different and heterogeneous databases; besides the distribution of data, complexity factors like schema heterogeneity and data replication must be resolved through integration and data fusion activities. Our multistore solution relies on a dataspace to provide the user with an integrated view of the available data and enables the formulation and execution of GPSJ queries. In this paper, we propose a technique to optimize the execution of GPSJ queries by formulating and evaluating different execution plans on the multistore. In particular, we outline different strategies to carry out joins and data fusion by relying on different schema representations; then, a self-learning black-box cost model is used to estimate execution times and select the most efficient plan. The experiments assess the effectiveness of the cost model in choosing the best execution plan for the given queries and exploit multiple multistore benchmarks to investigate the factors that influence the performance of different plans. Abstract: Follow this and additional works at: https://aisel.aisnet.org/cais Recommended Citation Recommended Citation Abstract:In this tutorial, the issue of compatibility between a big data storage technology and an analytic workload is explored using a fictitious streaming company as an example. The tutorial offers an interactive approach to help students understand the importance of considering workload compatibility when adopting new technologies. We provide instructors with the following: two Jupyter Notebooks that analyze compatibility, a detailed instructor guide on how to execute these notebooks, lessons learned, and appendices containing solutions and explanations. This tutorial provides a valuable resource for instructors teaching courses in database systems, big data, and analytic concepts, helping students develop practical skills to navigate effectively the complexities of big data technologies. Abstract: Strategy tools are widely used to inform the complex and unstructured decision making of firms. Although software has evolved to support strategy analysis, such digital strategy tools still require heavy manual work especially on the data input and processing levels, making their use time-intensive, costly, and susceptible to biases. This design research presents the 'SWOT Bot', a digital strategy tool that exploits recent advances in natural language processing (NLP) to perform a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis. Our artifact uses a feed reader, an NLP pipeline, and a visual interface to automatically extract information from a text corpus (e.g., analyst reports) and present it to the user. We argue that the SWOT Bot reduces time and adds objectivity to strategy analyses while allowing the human-in-the-loop to focus on value-adding tasks. Besides providing a functioning prototype, our work provides three general design principles for the development of next-generation digital strategy tools.Strategy tools-such as a SWOT, Porter's Five Forces, or the PEST model-are widely used among managers, analysts, and consultants in today's business practice (e.g., Jarzabkowski and Kaplan, 2014;Wright et al., 2013;Vaara andWhittington, 2012 andor Clark, 1997). While the term 'tool' generally refers to anything that helps perform a specific task, management tools cover any model, concept, framework, method, or technique that helps to solve a managerial problem (Hakala and Vuorinen, 2020; Jarzabkowski and Kaplan, 2014;Knott, 2008). Strategy tools are a subset of management tools that deal with strategic challenges, such as understanding a company's positioning and developing a new competitive strategy. Strategy tools are cognitive as well as material artifacts (Paroutis et al., 2015) that shape the mental models of strategists and hence affect both content and process of strategy work (Vuorinen et al., 2018). The application of strategy tools in practice is based on quantitative and qualitative inputs, where qualitative information seems to dominate. Although the use of strategy tools has evolved from pen and paper drawings to digital templates and dedicated software suites over the past decades (Ain et al., 2019;Arnott et al., 2017), our initial analysis found that digital tools for strategy available on the market lack support on the input, processing, and output levels. Contemporary digital strategy tools heavily rely on human tasks because strategic analysis is a complex process that integrates knowledge and data from heterogeneous and often unstructured sources (Hakala and Vuorinen, 2020;Jarzabkowski and Kaplan, 2015). Abstract: Emergency management (EM) has always been a concern of people from all walks of life due to the devastating impacts emergencies can have. The global outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 has pushed EM to the top topic. As mobile phones have become ubiquitous, many scholars have shown interest in using mobile phone data for EM. This paper presents a systematic literature review about the use of mobile phone data for EM that includes 65 related articles written between 2014 and 2019 from six electronic databases. Five themes in using mobile phone data for EM emerged from the reviewed articles, and a systematic framework is proposed to illustrate the current state of the research. This paper also discusses EM under COVID-19 pandemic and five future implications of the proposed framework to guide future work. Collapse

Abstract: a b s t r a c t While many schemes have been proposed to search encrypted relational databases, less attention has been paid to NoSQL databases. In this paper we report on the design and the implementation of a security scheme called "SecureNoSQL" for searching encrypted cloud NoSQL databases. Our solution is one of the first efforts covering not only data confidentiality, but also the integrity of the datasets residing on a cloud server. In our system a secure proxy carries out the required transformations and the cloud server is not modified. The construction is applicable to all NoSQL data models and, in our experiments, we present its application to a Document-store data model. The contributions of this paper include: (1) a descriptive language based on a subset of JSON notations; (2) a tool to create and parse a security plan consisting of cryptographic modules, data elements, and mappings of cryptographic modules to the data fields; and (3) a query and data validation mechanism based on the security plan. Abstract: The proliferation of unstructured data is a growing threat to effective enterprise performance management. Enterprise search is a tool to help organizations more effectively manage this documentbased information. The success of full-text enterprise search is limited by ambiguity in word meanings, which can result in many documents returned which are not relevant to the searcher. While early work by Zipf provided a first attempt at quantifying the impact of this issue on search, little work has been done to demonstrate the applicability of Zipf’s work to contemporary document collections. In this paper we examine whether the frequency-meaning relationship discovered by Zipf holds for contemporary document collections, and whether it consistently holds across different subject domains. We then discuss the implications of our results for the development and use of user-centered KPIs designed to measure the enterprise wide effectiveness of search activities. Collapse

Abstract: The exponential growth of available information and the deployment of knowledge management systems delivers excessive information to the end users that they cannot manage at once. This problem has led to an increased emphasis on solutions to information overload. Searching and browsing are two methods to locate information. Many studies have focused on solving the information overload problem in the searching process, but the methods to alleviate information overload in browsing process have not been adequately studied. Hence, a method that addresses information overload in the browsing process is presented in this paper. The aim is to reduce the information overload during browsing domain knowledge for new knowledge users who have little understanding of the information. In this method, a knowledge map and social network analysis are utilized to navigate the knowledge users. Technologies first construct a knowledge map from text mining and the important knowledge that includes more information about the domain is then identified via social network analysis. Based on this process, the knowledge user can browse the domain knowledge starting from the important knowledge and navigate via the knowledge map. We applied the method to assist new knowledge users in browsing the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) domain knowledge base to validate the method. The results indicate that the method can identify the important knowledge at a highly acceptable level, the constructed knowledge map can efficiently navigate the knowledge users, and the information overload can be significantly decreased. Abstract: Industry has received little attention in Information systems research as a factor explaining information and communication technology (ICT) related activities in organizations. By drawing on a case study in the building and construction industry in Sweden, the aim of this paper is to contribute to an enhanced knowledge of how industry specific features shape the adoption and use of ICT. It is concluded that the adoption and deployment of ICT is shaped by the interplay among three main dimensions of the industry. These dimensions are the market and production environment (shaped by specific interaction patterns among its features), the socio-cognitive environment, and institutional actors. The outcomes of this interplay will “fit” material features of ICT, implying certain ICT applications are preferred in a specific industry. However, the interaction patterns among which features to be included in the framework will vary among industries. The suggested framework can be used as a point of departure when ICTrelated activities in an industry are analysed. Collapse

Abstract: Keyword search has failed to adequately meet the needs of enterprise users. This is largely due to the indeterminate nature of languages. We argue a different approach needs to be taken, and draw on the success of previous library indexing concepts to propose a solution. We test our solution by performing search queries on a large research database. By incorporating readily available subject indexes into the search process, we obtain order of magnitude improvements in the performance of search queries. Our performance measure is the ratio of the number of documents returned without using subject indexes to the number of documents returned when subject indexes are used. We explain why the observed tenfold improvement in search performance on our research database can be expected to occur for searches on a wide variety of enterprise document stores. Collapse
