Abstract: Doxing, a form of adversarial online behavior, is the aggregation and release of an individual's personal information with malicious intent. It is increasingly used to intimidate, punish, or silence individuals. Such weaponization of personal information can result in extreme and intertwined cyber harassment and physical threats, significantly affecting doxees' participation in both cyber and physical communities. While prior research has examined the underlying motives of the doxer, the doxee's perspective has remained largely unexplored. Drawing on data from 14 individuals who have experienced doxing, this study examines the consequences of doxing from the doxee's point of view. Employing the lens of approach and avoidance coping, we explore how doxees respond to doxing threats and adapt their behavior. Our research provides novel insight and themes related to doxing. Based on our analysis, we offer an agenda for information systems (IS) research and practice, paving the way for exploring doxing and potential remedies. Collapse

Abstract: Cyberbullying has become a serious threat to the safety of online social communities. With the increasing growth of cyberbullying incidents, online communities rely on content moderation systems to mitigate this problem. Despite the important role of human moderators to maintain the online interactions healthy, there is a notable absence of research investigating cyberbullying within this profession. To address this gap, this study aims to comprehend moderators' understanding of cyberbullying in order to develop better and more effective intervention strategies. Using a focus group method, we explored moderators' opinions about the definitions given to cyberbullying in the scientific literature. The findings of this study highlight the importance of a message's context to detect cyberbullying rather than only considering its content. Additionally, this study indicates the role of online space factors that facilitate the occurrence of cyberbullying and the importance of clear guidelines to combat cyberbullying. Collapse

Abstract: Whaling is one of the most financially damaging, well-known, effective cyberattacks employed by sophisticated cybercriminals. Although whaling largely consists of sending a simplistic email message to a whale (i.e. a high-value target in an organization), it can result in large payoffs for cybercriminals, in terms of money or data stolen from organizations. While a legitimate cybersecurity threat, little information security research has directed attention toward whaling. In this study, we begin to provide an initial understanding of what makes whaling such a pernicious problem for organizations, executives, or celebrities (e.g. whales), and those charged with protecting them. We do this by defining whaling, delineating it from general phishing and spear phishing, presenting real-world cases of whaling, and provide guidance on future information security research on whaling. We find that whaling is far more complex than general phishing and spear phishing, spans multiple domains (e.g. work and personal), and potentially results in spillover effects that ripple across the organization. We conclude with a discussion of promising future directions for whaling and information security research. Collapse

Abstract: In an effort to create new sociotechnical tools to combat online harassment, we developed a scale to detect and measure verbal violence within individual tweets. Unfortunately, we found that the scale, based on scales effective at detecting harassment offline, was unreliable for tweets. Here, we begin with information about the development and validation of our scale, then discuss the scale’s shortcomings for detecting harassment in tweets, and explore what we can learn from this scale’s failures. We explore how rarity, context, and individual coder’s differences create challenges for detecting verbal violence in individual tweets. We also examine differences in on- and offline harassment that limit the utility of existing harassment measures for online contexts. We close with a discussion of potential avenues for future work in automated harassment detection. Collapse
