Abstract: People acquire and buy technology in stores or online in the same way as any other consumer product, so understanding the user as a consumer of technology is essential. In this study, we investigate how the use of ubiquitous consumer technology evolves over time and suggest a theoretical account of how use evolves into different patterns of embodiment. Empirically, we followed 15 consumers of smartphones during a 6-month field study and collected data via interviews, survey, and focus groups. Analytically, we view the user as a consumer of technology and develop three technology life narratives as patterns of embodiment. As a theoretical lens, we draw upon the theory of consumption values and approached use as a dynamic consumption process in which different values drive use over time. We found three distinct patterns of embodiment: that of conditionalists, aesthetic socialites, and functional enthusiasts. Conditionalists are pragmatic and use technology only when the device fulfils pre-existing needs and the preferred alternative is unavailable. Aesthetic socialites use the technology as a fashion accessory and to manage their personal relationships. Functional enthusiasts are gadget lovers whose tinkering for the sake of exploration leads them to discover new needs that the technology can fulfil. Besides the three patterns of embodiment, we discovered a type of use that we argue falls outside of the values described in the theory of consumption values. Abstract: In this study, we propose a new method to measure the subjective well-being (SWB) of Chinese people. Based upon the classic framework in psychology, our model constructs a system of multiple weighted emotions in positive and negative affect by applying a text-sentiment analysis. To study SWB in the Chinese context, we also establish and supplement our model with a new lexicon, Ren-CECps-SWB 2.0. Tests on the data of 7 years of grassroots blogs on Sina.com demonstrate the validity of our model. Employing the same data, we find interesting patterns of the SWB of Chinese people on weekly and monthly bases. Collapse

Abstract: This paper explores the fundamental influence of consumer rating behavior on an emerging third-party software application market, mobile app market. In app market, consumers’ ex ante belief on app utility essentially is determined by the app rating while at the same time the app rating itself is derived from the ex post utility obtained by purchased customers. We develop an analytical model which explicitly characterizes this bidirectional rating-utility conversion based on a newly introduced concept “reservation rating”. After building this conversion process into the utility function, we examine the market equilibrium and show how change in consumer rating attitude, such as being severer in offering ratings or being less critical in accepting ratings, would affect the developers’ optimal choices of app price and app quality level as well as the platform owner’s optimal revenue sharing policy. Abstract: As firms in the information technology (IT) industry create increasingly complex products and face escalating service demands, they resort to customer peer-based solutions such as discussion boards to contain service costs. In discussion boards, customers post questions about products and receive answers from their peers. The sustainability of discussion boards depends on attracting volunteers who are willing to contribute answers to posted questions. Many IT firms use token recognition, such as titles, profiles, or lists of top 10 contributors, to motivate customer contribution. However, little is known about the effects of such incentives. By studying half a million postings collectively from the technical support discussion boards of four different IT companies, we find that some incentives can cannibalize socially based processes and reduce customer contribution. Our findings have implications for service firms as they strive to increase customer knowledge coproduction in service activities. Collapse

Abstract: Game theoretic models attempted to predict unique equilibrium outcomes of negotiations with limited success. The imprecise character of negotiation is often altered to fit the game theorist's exacting approach. Alternative models deviated from the formal game theoretic approach and attempted to accommodate concepts such as negotiator power and time pressure. In this paper, we introduce a model which uses a fuzzy logic approach to deal with the imprecision in the negotiation process and to integrate several negotiation theories. The new model is used to simulate multiple-issue, two-party negotiations and results are consistent with established negotiation theories. Collapse
