Embracing brain and behaviour: Designing programs of complementary neurophysiological and behavioural studies

Abstract: NeuroIS—the methods and knowledge of neuroscience applied to the information systems (IS) domain—has become an established research field within the IS discipline. A key advantage of NeuroIS is its ability to provide insights into human cognition beyond those obtained using behavioural techniques alone. Nevertheless, in neuroscience, there is renewed interest in examining behaviour together with neurophysiological methods to better inform our understanding of neural processes. In this research opinion article, we argue that in the field of NeuroIS, there is an opportunity for hybrid programs of study that combine neurophysiological and behavioural methods in a complementary manner. We outline four strategies for designing complementary neurophysiological and behavioural experiments in a research program: (1) observe the relationship between neural processes and behavioural change; (2) combine neurophysiological and behavioural methods to enhance internal, external, and ecological validity; (3) extend, rather than replicate, experiments based on theory; and (4) use neurophysiological and behavioural experiments together to evaluate IT artefact design. By applying these strategies, researchers can more effectively design programs using complementary neurophysiological and behavioural methods, which, in turn, can help to provide richer insights into the phenomena under study as well as accelerate the advancement of IS knowledge. Abstract: This study advances the IS literature by investigating the effects of visualization on promoting sustainability knowledge and pro-environmental behaviors. Specifically, drawing on the visualization literature, we explain how the key visualization features, expectancy illustration, and interactivity affect individuals' understanding of the impact of their behaviors on the environment, encouraging pro-environmental behaviors. Additionally, we draw on the pedagogy literature to explicate that the effects of visualization on learning outcomes and pro-environmental practices can be explained through individuals' psychological responses in their course of interpreting the visualization. Collectively, this study presents our endeavor in understanding the roles of visualization in ecological discourse by integrating the visualization literature and sustainability research. Moreover, by unboxing individuals' psychological processes in interpreting visualization, we offer a fresh perspective to understanding the promises and challenges of using visualization for knowledge acquisition. Abstract: Online shopping platforms attract consumers to purchase by offering discounts or informing them about the availability of limited quantities of cheaper items during a set time period. Offering goods on sale for a brief window creates a sense of time pressure and encourages impulse purchases. However, few studies have discussed the relationship between physiological signals and the promotional impact of limited time offers. In this study, we discuss the promotional impact of different promotion methods under time pressure and perform experiments using brainwaves and galvanic skin responses of 53 participants to reveal the relationships. This study surveys 501 participants to determine the promotional impact of limited time offers on customers using qualified experimented pictures to recall their feeling toward limited time offers. The analytical results indicate that timelimited promotions, monetary discounts, and online reviews significantly affect impulse purchase behavior. The experiential results show that promotion methods can arouse physiological signals and emotional reactions in participants. Finally, the research and managerial implications are discussed. Abstract: Escalation of commitment -the tendency to persist with failing courses of action -can determine whether a distressed Information Systems (IS) project can be turned around. To disentangle the emotional and cognitive factors that give rise to escalation we conducted a between-subject randomized controlled laboratory experiment with 75 Master, MBA, and Ph.D. students, including data triangulation between neurophysiological and behavioral measures. This study successfully replicates the bias in the context of IS project distress, provides evidence for a psychophysiological link, supports the predictions on the role of negative and complex emotional states of self-justification theory over coping theory, and adds to a better understanding of how escalation tendency changes over time due to learning effects. Our findings contribute to enhancing decision-making in uncertain environments by using cognitive and emotional markers and thereby provide the foundation for developing neuro-adaptive de-escalation strategies. Abstract: Experiments play an important role in Information Systems research. In this area, Virtual Reality (VR) technologies can serve as a tool for enabling and conducting research. e.g., to investigate human behavior in specific situations. A prime example is VR-supported driving simulators that allow researchers in the automotive domain to gather knowledge while reducing cost and complexity compared to field studies with real cars. We argue that the use of carefully designed VR-supported experiments might allow researchers to get deeper insights into human behavior. Thus, we derive design principles for VR Experiments as an artifact from the literature about VR-supported driving simulations that have been accepted as a useful tool for research in their domain. Abstract: Scholars commonly use protection motivation theory (PMT) by Rogers to examine information systems (IS) security behaviors and behavioral intentions. A recent, influential paper by Boss, Galletta, Lowry, Moody, and Polak (2015; hereafter BGLMP) in MIS Quarterly outlines correct and incorrect uses of PMT in Information Security behavior research. In this paper, we review some of BGLMP's key recommendations, such as the claim that all IS behavior studies that apply PMT should always use the model of the full theory, contain and measure fear, and measure actual behaviors. We defend an interpretation of Rogers (1975Rogers ( , 1983) that differs from the interpretation that BGLMP propose. We present evidence that Rogers' PMT and the empirical evidence do not adequately support many of BGLMP's suggestions and that these suggestions contradict good scientific practices (e.g., restricting the use of the method of isolation) that the philosophy of science and the original literature on PMT uphold. As a result, if reviewers and editors continue to embrace these recommendations, they could hinder the progress of IS behavior research by not allowing isolation or the combination of different theoretical components. In contrast to BGLMP's paper, we argue that further PMT research can focus on isolated PMT components and combine them with other theories. Some of our ideas (e.g., isolation) are not PMT-specific and could be useful for IS research in general. In summary, we contest BGLMP's recommendations and offer revised recommendations in return. Abstract: This study investigates how visual stimuli influence cancer-related charitable online giving. Particularly, the study investigates how different types of crowdfunding campaign pictures affect donors' decision to contribute to specific campaigns. We gathered crowdfunding campaigns from GoFundMe and divided them according to the main picture used in each campaign, i.e., cancer-related pictures vs. non-cancer-related pictures and pictures of individuals vs. pictures of groups. We then conducted an online experiment and a laboratory experiment using physiological measures. The results from the experiments show that cancer-related pictures receive more money and more immediate attention and arousal than non-cancer-related pictures. Furthermore, group pictures receive more money and more total attention than individual pictures. The physiological measures from the laboratory experiment provide valuable knowledge about the underlying emotional mechanisms involved in the donation process. Collapse

Abstract: Conversational agents (CAs) equipped with human-like features (e.g., name, avatar) have been reported to induce the perception of humanness and social presence in users, which can also increase other aspects of users' affection, cognition, and behavior. However, current research is primarily based on self-reported measurements, leaving the door open for errors related to the self-serving bias, socially desired responding, negativity bias and others. In this context, applying neuroscience methods (e.g., EEG or MRI) could provide a means to supplement current research. However, it is unclear to what extent such methods have already been applied and what future directions for their application might be. Against this background, we conducted a comprehensive and transdisciplinary review. Based on our sample of 37 articles, we find an increased interest in the topic after 2017, with neural signal and trust/decision-making as upcoming areas of research and five separate research clusters, describing current research trends. Abstract: As a consequence of lockdowns due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the resulting restricted social mobility, several billion people worldwide have recently had to replace physical face-to-face communication with computer-mediated interaction. Notably, the adoption rates of videoconferencing increased significantly in 2020, predominantly because videoconferencing resembles face-to-face interaction. Tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Cisco Webex are used by hundreds of millions of people today. Videoconferencing may bring benefits (e.g., saving of travel costs, preservation of environment). However, prolonged and inappropriate use of videoconferencing may also have an enormous stress potential. A new phenomenon and term emerged, Zoom fatigue, a synonym for videoconference fatigue. This paper develops a definition for Zoom fatigue and presents a conceptual framework that explores the major root causes of videoconferencing fatigue and stress. The development of the framework draws upon media naturalness theory and its underlying theorizing is based on research published across various scientific fields, including the disciplines of both behavioral science and neuroscience. Based on this theoretical foundation, hypotheses are outlined. Moreover, implications for research and practice are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Information technology (IT) interruptions are IT-based events that capture users' attention and interfere with other activities. This study focuses on repeated IT interruption and task performance. We draw on dual-process theory and suggest that users may get used to repeated IT interruption, known as habituation, or may become hypersensitive, known as sensitization. We validate the research model based on data from a laboratory experiment with 100 subjects by using a multivariate latent growth model (LGM). With subjective and objective measurement techniques, we show how users respond to repeated IT interruption with physiological arousal, psychological exhaustion, and behavioral task performance. Our results indicate that user responses follow different patterns over time, revealing time-dependent effects of arousal and exhaustion on task performance. We contribute to literature by providing evidence that repeated IT interruption results in unique habituation and sensitization user response patterns compared to a single IT interruption. Collapse
